Pig dogging .... Good or bad ?

As seen on 7.30 report tonight .

Years ago , about 1980 I met a bloke in Bali that was from WA. He used to catch the pigs with his dog and then go in and cut it's throat .
I had never heard of this method until then. I thought wow that's gutsy .
Only ever heard of shooting pigs from trees until then .

It now seems that this pig killing method has become commonplace .

What are your thoughts , bloodthirsty bogans or gutsty sportsmen ?

I've known a few blokes that went pigging, I must admit- thier style wasnt not quite my cup of tea. Give me a suitable rifle and some clear room anytime!

They all seemed a bit over the top for me, but I must admit- they were constantly catching pigs usually 3 to 4 every time they went into the hills around Perth.

A couple of the fellas used to hike deep into the water catchment areas (no-go areas and quarantined) without the dogs- only taking knives and spears.
Let me tell you- the old British Army tradition of pig sticking is alive and well!!
They would intentionally provoke a pig- making it charge them and let it run itself through on the spear, and finish it off with the knife. butcher it on the spot, bury the icky bits and take the meat and tusks home.

These gutsy fellas were out usually every second weekend- sometimes more, and in the 4+ years I knew them- they never came back without a kill.

Its not how they were killing the pigs that worries me- the way I see it, killing a pig with either dogs, spears, knives, rifles (or a combination of any of these) is still way more humane than the horrific slow and painfull death from poisons issued by the govt.

The scary bit for me is how many wild pigs are living and breeding in our foothills and water catchment areas!

Feral pigs are very destructive and need to be killed at the greatest rate possible. Fish, on the other hand, are yummy!

I hunt feral animals and meat game (Roos, goats etc.) but have never been pigging with dogs.

It's not my cup of tea as it puts the dogs in danger, gets the pig all worked up and harasses the pig before it dies. My method of a quiet stalk and then a dollop of lead to the brain is instant and the animal generally doesnt know what's going on till it's dead on its feet.

Again, that may not be someone else's cup of tea but the fact is that I hunt for meat or to eradicate ferals.

These guys do as well but I believe that if you kill an animal when it is calm, the meat is better as there is no adrenaline or other hormones in the meat when it dies giving a better product.

I also don't like to see animals suffer or harassed and certainly wouldn't like to see my hunting dog ( who only tracks animals) hurt by a pig or any other animal.

But, as I enjoy my right and priveledge to hunt and wouldn't want anyone to take that away from me, I respect others rights to hunt in the manner that they deam as acceptable.

I wouldn't partake and I hope that they are swift with the knife but that is their choice.

I hadnt seen the video- and didnt know about this bit- that sort of thing is not hunting, or vermin control, or sport. It is animal cruelty, and I hope the mongrels doing this get busted.

Feral pigs (and foxes, cats, camels, wild dogs etc) need killing- but it needs to be done quickly, cleanly and without any stuffing around or fuss. I was always taught by my father to be professional about it.

I never got the benefit of semi-autos here in W.A. but my Ithica 37 shottie was perfect in the bush for short range rapid fire hunting, now I just settle for the threeoh and sometimes my sons lever .38, really miss that ithica......

Got a lift from some blokes up in NT
They had a trailer behind 4wd with a pregnant sow in it that the 2 dogs had been chewing on, still alive, just, with bits hanging off it everywhere.

I was f'uked stuck in the middle of nowhere and the only place for me and a couple of mates to sit/crouch was in the trailer with the pig, bleeding everywhere.
Grateful of the lift didnt say much, it was brutal the pig didnt move at all, we just watched its belly rise and fall and blood run around in bottom of the trailer for what seemed like hours.

We stopped later down the track and i asked the obvious, why not kill it, "nah we will kill after its had the piglets". Saw these blokes viscously kicking the dogs as well, no respect for anything. I sincerely hope those dogs turn them blokes one day, arseholes.

But is there a correlation between between those involved in the lawful and humane culling of animals for good reason, and rapists?

I submit not - you are quoting the many studies that show the undisciplined evil children of incompetent parents, who torture animals, most often become abusers of humans (by way of killing, torture or rape.)

You are making a very simplified comment to make it sound like anyone who shoots, or is involved in dogging, is perverted wanker.
Are all farmers, DEC workers, or veterinarians "rapists"? They all kill animals.

This thread is discussing the ABC program that covered humane dogging activity, as well as the (very rare) inhumane practices. To which do you refer?

By the way, there is ample evidence to show that paedophiles and arsonists have very similar brain chemistry and ideals.

Then LittleJon posts "there is a correlation between people who enjoy torturing animals and rapists" - an obvious simplification that refers not to the broader issues, but rather it implies that anyone to whom this discussion relates is weird, bent, or mentally unstable.

I'd call that the "left wing" straw man trick - ignore the fact the discussion refers to many differnent issues yet make a quick one liner so the reader may imply that the qualities of the worst end of the spectrum applies to all
