I had the opportunity to go surfing trip down south with some friends last weekend. I was amazed at the overcrowding Everyman and his dog wants to surf now and waiting half an hour for a wave only to run over 15 people paddling out when you catch it didn't really appeal to me.
Surfing is becoming way to overpopulated i think.
Im going to stick to my windsurfing..
which break did you go to?
same in wavesailing isnt it?
mid week isnt a lot better, but if you look theres a few less crowded breaks
I used to go before dawn but when you get ten in the water before you can see is a bit crazy
or learn to not follow the clones with their 6'2"s and find a spot to yourself around the corner thats still breaking but not on clone radar...
or better yet
ride a sup
those that know understand ![]()
Its a shame surfing has gone that way i see Kitesurfing going down the same track.
I used to love the calm quiet and banter in the line up sharing the stoke and enjoying the waves.
Now it seems its all about ego and 'look at me'
The soul has been ripped out of it.
Is it just me or are some of the above people living to work not working to live?
If where u go surfing is gettin to crowded try moving?
I live in newcastle and it is getting alot more crowded then compared to when i was younger but we live in australia surely there is an uncrowded break on a beach fairly close to you if you live on the coast?
Try not to be a sheep n go surfing where everyone else is, go around the corner and surf somewhere less crowded then complain about it on here about the good old days because there never coming back...![]()

its not the crowds tat do my head in, its the attitude of the people in the crowd. i often surf here with just a few out and it only takes 1 or 2 idiots / jerks to wreck a session (or 1 greedy long boarder).
theres places with a definite system like shark island which works great, but so many others where chaos reigns.
Ah yes crowded local breaks,,
I guess you have never surfed Burleigh, Dbah or any of the other classic Gold Coast Breaks on a crowded day,, makes Perth crowds look really tame in comparison. 100's of dudes in one small location,, get dropped in on 4-5 times in one wave,, normal there..
Yep I agree, keep the agro out of the water, dont be a tosser, plenty of waves for all....
Q - where do all the SUP riders go in Perth when its big?
So its expected that more than one person catches a wave now? ....
I remember the good old days when it just used to be a crew of 5 friends out ;-( on 1 break.
Seems like you need a boat to go offshore to get that again.
Do the move if you can ,i did .have grown up in scarbs since i was knee high , was awesome thru the late 80 "s an 90 "s but went to s*** when lids became a swarm of pubescent flies .moved to sw 5 yrs ago ,best thing we ever did .it does get crowded at usual times but avoid it like i do ,go mid week , etc . Went to a known spot 2 wks ago mid wk bout 8 am , 3 out who went in a wave later , and had it to myself for 1 an half hrs , head high offshore , more barrels than i've had all year combined ! It does come your way sooner or later if your patient enough !
Also depends on the break as well. I'd rather surf crowded 13th beacon with random wedges over the place than Bird Rock with 3 "on it" locals.
