A guy came past me on a very low fancy 3 wheel recumbent bike the other day. Much like this but smaller wheels. I did think it was pretty stupid that he has to wear a helmet.
I cycle thousands of KM a year.
I wear a comfortable helmet always.
The fact that it 'can' save your life and doesn't interfere with riding a bike is good enough justification for me.
Also i have had more near misses on bike paths or duel share paths than on main roads.
I usually wear a skid lid when on the deadly treadly.
My mates pay me out, "Why you wearing that **** etc"
"Why do you think" is a pretty good answer. Sure, it might not save your life but if I bin it big time (which with my riding ability is probably likely) I would rather have it on that not have it.
Your scone is delicate and for something so simple...
I always wear a helmet because I am a wuss. I don't mind this, as it probably means I will have a better chance of survival if I come off.
On the Great WA bike ride I did a few years back, one of my friends came off his bike, and hit the road. His helmet was absolutely shattered. He had a bruise on his forehead, and a bruise on his shoulder. Otherwise he was fine.
Best advertisement I have seen for wearing a helmet.
Wife crashed her bike last year.
She smashed her helmet (broke it cleanly - a brand new helmet I'd bought her 2 days before).
5 hours in hospital, a bunch of x-rays and a couple of CT scans she walked out with a concussion and a really sore neck and shoulder.
Medical team said that if it wasn't for the helmet she'd have died instantly.
'nuff said.
If you come off your bike your hands wont stop you before you hit the ground , well i guess it all depends how fast your going i always wear my helmet if im going fast but if im going slow there is really no need . People are easily convinced that a helmet is necessary on a bike yet people still get head injuries walking no one is telling you to wear a helmet when you walk also no one criticizes any one for driving an unsafe old car , id rather ride a bike with no helmet than drive a 1970s corolla id consider the bike safer.
As for cops yeah there mostly a waste of space and when they go 30kmh over the speed limit to catch you for going 10 over its ok.
I say just do what you feel like , its your head .
