years ago it was much easier- the carcase would have been towed out and "dispersed" with help from a decent load of Dr Nobels finest rapidly expanding bait suppliment.

Whales and dynamite don't go too well together! Love the ending but.
How is a dead anything still protected (CITES excepted) when it presents a clear & present danger to the public at large?
I wonder how long a whale carcass would last when it "washes up" on the lawn at parliament house?

Their is big issue with Oceanrch research that is showing long term effect on large sharks being lifted out of the water, mostly death, but maybe that would be welcomed by many![]()
]
Where did you hear that?
Sorry i think you missed my point. I don't want any sharks harmed..FULLSTOP. Its their ocean and we play in it at our risk. Sharks are needed and i don't think people understand how important they to our survival..I cant be clearer than that![]()
I haven't changed my tune. ..
Oh well,.. at least you're consistent then.
What you will then have to accept, is that all the government can do is throw money at various authorities on the pretext of using it for the 'management' of the shark problem.
It wont make any difference of course, but at least when people keep getting eaten, they can point to all the millions they have spent and claim they are doing all they can to solve the problem.
In reality, the money handed out is just bringing forward the millions requested by these authorities previously but were rejected due to insufficient justification.
The shark problem was then put forwards as the previously missing justification.
And why not?
Everyone wants a nice new boat and a cushy job.
Stand by for the next round of new boats and bigger budgets next time the attacks start again.
(That is, assuming that someone hasn't already stepped in and taken out a few GW's without announcing it to the world.)
The problem with killing and wiping out GW sharks could be a catastrophic to our eco system. Research areas that done just this. They now are left with nothing, no fish, just killer Squid![]()
I don't think there would be many peole wanting them all to be wiped out.
I would certainly not support that.
It wouldn't bother me to remove half a dozen over a year or two, which frequent local coastal waters and show an inclination to eat people.
This is a long way short of wiping them out.

Ive been told this has already happened.
I wouldn't be at all surprised.
The attacks stopped very suddenly and not a single one since.
I'm happy with that.

From what I was told they were killed then sunk with weight.
Whats with these carcases turning up all of a sudden?
Has there been any of that "super sonar" used in the area by the US Navy?
Does anyone do any testing on these carcases to try and determine cause of death?
come on fellas- must be a conspiracy here we can drag out for our Heavy Weather section

Whales and dynamite don't go too well together! Love the ending but.
Half a ton of dynamite to disperse an 8 ton whale is going a bit overboard! [but impressive]![]()
All it would take is half a dozen 400 gram boosters to spread the love- but not while on land, should be done miles out!
You could even let the Navy or Air force use the carcase for target practice [with time expired ammo] to save a few bob.
Another option- let washed up carcases be rendered down for blood and bone fertilizer.

some food chain management
our japanese friends could help with the seals and the whales. I understand from a few people that the New Zealand seal population along the south west coast of WA has boomed in the last decade. The whale population has increased also. the fishos in Augusta could take out some of the great whites. back to the 1970 numbers, whatever that was.
its all about a sustainable number of each species
the tagging and studies are needed to determine numbers of the sharks, seals, whales and the associate food chain etc to show the effects of management, fishing, currents, temperature, acidity, pollution etc.

I think the US communication facility at Geraldton has affected the juvenile whales
just a thought, why not a mobile proccessing plant that can be sent to the whale on the beach ,chop it up ,render it down, tons of oil and fertilizer gets sold to offset the costs of running the shark tagging program.
could even get some private contractors to do it on profit only basis. id be up for it![]()

I guess the argument with that is that Many marine scientists are saying its already at a point of too late. The question is numbers and if you believe that then any deaths are too many. I guess thats the end for me as its not what I'm looking to argue anymore. Not online anyway, but i will post if i ever get a response..![]()

Many marine scientists are saying its already at a point of too late
Based on what data? I suspect as per usual, they are pulling data out of thin air, with no real hard facts, and is more BHAG (big hairy arsed guess) .
Same scenario when people put up the ???Oh but we are in their domain??? as a logic not to take out a particular shark that has become or is becoming a problem.![]()

you want a conspiracy theory? watch "black fish"

Probably not the best idea to be chopping up a whale on the beach and have all the oil, blubber etc leach into the sand and back into the ocean.
That sh!t hangs around and will be attracting sharks for weeks if not months after...
So two whales have washed up within 5kms of each other. As an avid Kiter who likes to enjoy Pinneroo and Mullaz. How long would you give the place a miss for?
I have been hitting Quins- but it's just not the same.
September to November is whale season/shark season I wouldnt go in near mullaz pinaroo till late late late november (probably december cause im a pussy)![]()
Personally i'd be giving it at least a couple of weeks or if a bit of a front comes through with onshores and swell to flush it all out should be right.

You wont get a response because the purpose of spending all that money will then be ruined.
The idea of splashing out all that money for no real result is to make people think lots is being achieved to solve the problem.
If they then contract out a few fishies to remove a few sharks but don't tell anyone, then everybody's happy. ( a great idea I might add.
The fishies ar happy because they got paid $50 and had a great time.
The police and fisheries dept are happy because they got five milion dollars, some new boats, and more staff.
The surfers are happy because they are not being eaten.
The marine activista are happy because the government bought some new boats, tagged 14 sharks, and that fixed the shark problem, just like they said it would.
Why do you want to ruin it all by asking difficult questions? ![]()
And anyway, if the numbers of GW's are really low that can be easily fixed by getting channel 9 news to do the next numbers count.
Anything that's a bit sharky looking with big teeth will be a great white. ![]()
On that basis, my guess is we still have thousands. ![]()
So everything's sweet,. right?

So they bury it instead
or take for eva to decide what to do , . so drag the chunks up to the trypots further up from the beach.
we humans got so good at this before we nearly wiped them out![]()
The great whites have always been there The only thing that has changed now is there
"highlighted public awareness"
.
......... And diminishing food stocks ![]()
Its allways been a problem and its just a risk one takes when entering the water.
The risks are pretty minimal for windsurfers and kite-surfers.Unless your up for a big swim with gear failure !

Rubbish!
I've seen that documentary "Jaws", and it's a known fact that they can pluck a helicopter out of the air.
They would have no trouble at all plucking a kiter out of the sky, even at the top of one of those high twisty dangley things.
And they climb up the back of boats just so they can eat the driver. ![]()
Nobody is safe.
