Not sure they are striking over safety concerns or how heavy a heavy thing is.
It seems both the employers and employees have accepted all terms and conditions of the new agreement, including 12% pay rise over 3 years (i.e. 4% per year for the next 3 years of the agreement, not 12% tomorrow).
They are striking because they want a 4 day on 6 day off roster, not a 4/4.
MUA is saying it isn't safety, it isn't fatigue, it is 'quality of life outside of work'
The strike is apparently costing the WA economy $350 Million
The port says 4/6 will increase their labour costs by 27%, for no productivity gain.
No matter what you say about how hard they work I can't see it to be right they they can strike and cost so much just because they want 4/6 not 4/4, whilst happy with everything else.
Now, the Fair Work Act says the workers can hold the Port to ransom over a life style choice outside of work, but the Port can take no action over a union that increases it costs by 27% for no productivity gain.
As felixdcat implied - it is hardly a bad quality of life they have at 4/4 and $90k a year with 4% rise every year and long term employment contracts protected by the Fair Work Act.
Striking for safety concerns that have not been addressed - OK, sriking for basic conditions being cut to levels below industry standard - OK, but striking because 4/4 doesn't give you an acceptable 'quality of life' outside of work just smacks of union militantism for the sake of militantism.

I read the article ?
Extract ; “Instead of politicising and making a mockery of good faith bargaining, the Minister should allow Fremantle Port to continue negotiations and stop mispresenting the MUA's bargaining position in the media.”
Answer this, how is going on strike "good faith bargaining" ?
I read today they have dropped the 4/6 request, i wonder why, publicity=really bad and hiding to nothing spring to mind.
