Personally I bought from Seabreeze however I can not see any reason for not purchasing a kite on E-bay or Gumtree.

This site seems dead against this....Why?

Maybe cos Laurie gets $14 for every ad with a pic on here? (For all his HARD WORK mind you)

But the main reason - a small community like this is safe.
I'd have no dramas sending $1000 to somebody who had been here a while, knowing that the board or whatever will be as described and actually SENT.

How many Gumtree ads would you say that about?

Would you actually buy an item from another state?
when you more than likely could get it from here...
would you really spend extra money on postage? Marky Mark

Nothing wrong with ebay or gumtree but I know that sb has like-minded water enthusiasts so it has always been a good experience buying and selling here.

SB, much like a couple of other Aussie hobby forums I frequent, is full of like-minded individuals who through their posting show their true names and occupations and pics etc..... and the fact that they know other people on here.... so they are findable (real people!) unlike Gumtree or eBay

I have bought on here to the tune of $1000 sent to somebody I don't know, and it was fine.
Likewise, on another forum I have sold a product I make, to a bloke who knows nothing about me and he was happy to give me $1000 sight-unseen **as the very first buyer of that product**, with no reviews.

(This may put into perspective why I go off about trolling knobs with fake names who ruin the 'small community experience' but that's another story lol)

See what I mean. I got red thumbs for Asking the question.
Strange as it may be I have seen the same kite for sale on both SB and Gumtree.
What's the comeback for that scenario??

eBay isn't that cheap to sell on anymore. However I like the auction structure. Whenever selling there I normally start the auction at 99 cents. If the item is remotely of worth then this low price takes someone's interest. Before you know it a few people are bidding and the price keeps rising.

I sold a board like this and I was very happy with the price I received. So I threw in a few extras like a mast and fins.

Then eBay hit me with the bill.......

Gumtree seems to attract cheapscates.

Great question!

1) It's usually cheaper.. ebay fees will usually exceed $14 -

e.g. Ebay have a $3.00 listing fee, and then you pay 8% upon sale (i.e. $80 for selling a $1000 item). If you sell anything over $250, it's going to cost more than here. Gumtree is "free", but then charge you on the back-end for bumping/promo etc.

2) ebay and gumtree (owned by ebay) are both overseas ventures - I think it's it's great that we have some great online businesses that service Australian's that are actually in Australia!

3) Besides all that .. if you're selling gear, Seabreeze is the place that will get it sold ... you know it's going to a huge audience of people interested in your sport, rather than some generic Buy & Sell listing site.. i.e. it works.

Over 4500 testimonials to this fact.. some listed here:
www.seabreeze.com.au/Members/Classifieds/Testimonials.aspx

Hope we can sell something for you too some day, fingerbone!

Ive bought and sold a fair few surfboards on SB, there is less hassle eg scammers and most people that I deal with are local and pick up their gear in person. Gumtree is a nightmare, ebay Ive only used once and was fine, but I only used it because the item I was selling was a collectable and it needed a wide audience. It worked very well for that but general stuff like boards SB every time mate

I think the red thumbs were for saying "this site seems against dead against it"

This site is free and made by the hard work of a watersports enthusiast, later helped by the programming knowledge and hard work of a couple of volunteer mods who get nothing.

I'd hardly say SB.com.au or Laurie is "against" you advertising on Gumtree or eBay ........ but I reckon anyone with a bit of local pride or loyaltly to the local product, would use SB. Especially as an ad with no pics is free!!!

i will say one thing, if you are selling, not everyone knows about seabreeze until they are 'in the scene'. i.e beginning in their chosen sport/interest.
advertise on all if you really want to attract a potential buyer.

ebay has buyer protection.
Is there anyway to know a SB advert is legit?
What if it's by somebody who only just joined?

Just asking, don't flame me.

Like I said, small community. Once somebody has say 100 posts in a year, and a mate of mine knows somebody who seems to know he is a surfer from Wooblegobonadatta - then I reckon it is way better than "HongKongdirectto YOUaussie" on Ebay, regardless of his rating.

Then again, like I said, some others choose to come here and be c0cks and lucky they are obvious enough with their trash posts that they won't be able to trade much.

New users - no guarantee.

Another site I frequent does a users 'trader rating" and read stuff like "I bought from him and it was spot on", or "slow to pay and expects the world"
I don't see that would work here as we don't sell enough stuff (per person I mean)

Imagine running into your local pub where the locals have been drinking and socialising for 10 years and where the owner of the pub is mates with lots of the customers and saying - You blokes why don't you drink in the pub down the road its so much better.

Do you think you'd be 'red thumbed' ?

I've posted a few ad's here and also ebay.

The best value has been on SB, more than happy to part with $14 even if the eventual sale was via ebay.

I'd prefer to have 50 genuine ad hits from people actually into sailing than have to go through the Cr*p from ebay enquiries.

I didn't know there was anywhere else but SB to buy 2nd hand goods and I'll probably keep it that way. As Mark said you actually know who you're buying from. Have never had any issues buying and selling gear on SB.

That said the only real beef I have with the buy and sell (and this is completely outside Laurie's control) is the propensity of some (experienced) sellers to list gear younger than what it is i.e. there's numerous boards and sails listed as the later model. To an unexperienced buyer who thinks that they're getting a bargain on say a 2011 model when in fact it's either a 2010 or even earlier is deliberately misleading. At the end of the day though with any 2nd hand gear my advice is "caveat emptor"

Like most people that sell on here I can't recommend it more.

I have only sold surf and racing SUP nothing under $1500 and have never had a listing last for any longer than 3 days....

Sorry for trying to intellectualise SB. I'll ensure my modus operandi from now on will be to bring it down to the lowest common denominator. I suppose you had to look up "propensity" too.
