Used to brew my own from grain and I've still got all the gear. Kegging is definitely the best way to go. I don't have kegs and so need to bottle my brews which is where it all goes to custard for me. Just can't seem to get motivated to sterilise, fill and cap all the bottles. Haven't done it for ages as a result.
If you do brew from a kit, go the little extra and get some good fresh hops to drop in to the fermenter. Kits generally use Isohop for the hop bittering which means they lose out on aroma (although not as much as the megabrewery swills do!)
Somethin my old man use to say when he had is home brew crankin in the shed.
Done a few micro brews and they are up there with the best.

Folk are too lazy or do not have the time. I put my ginger beer into 1.5l coke bottles. Less washing, screw on cap and no danger of explosion.
A mate and I have our own still, purchased in WA. He is an alchoholic and gets through a 750ml bottle most nights, often more. He takes great great joy in the fact that he is denying the goverment revenue with every bottle. On the off occasion he has had shop bought **** it invariably gets thrown out.
I have to admit it is far far easier than beer but very rewarding at $1.56 a bottle!
