Hi all... first post. Long time lurker.
Just bought this exact deal last week, perfect for flying to work. You can use the micro sd cards, and you can buy an attachment ($38) that allows usb plug ins (memory stick only, not high power devices.)
Good battery life so far on power saver mode, even if I'm cranking the volume watching The Walking Dead.
why dont you teach your kids to read a book? Why would an 8 year old need a tablet? My 11 year old wanted an I pod touch, I refused and explained why he reluctantly accepted that, he has an I pod for music and an I pod dock. So we are not ludites.
And yes we do long car trips regulary we dont have DVD or video, we do have an I pad with some games but no video, my kids get bored with the I pad and put it down and would rather read, look out the window listen to music, play endless eye spy..... and even sit quietly no music etc and peer out the window as the ks click by, last trip 6000Ks.

You need to be thirteen to have a face book account?

They could read a book on the iPad..
. Listen to music on the ipad.... The technology isnt the problem
For me I'd get a iPad but the Samsung tablets are very good 2

I'd rather set her account with her so I can keep an eye on it than let her do it herself (you just enter the birthdate, there is no verification on facebook)
and yes galaxy are the go : android system, 80% of apps are free, easy sd storage. And the white one is "sooooooo nice" dixit daughter
Nexus 7 if you want value for money. Asus Transformer Infinity if you are a fifo dad. Or even get both. For good prices check out the ozbargain site. The Nexus 7 is about to be replaced with a new model and there are some really good deals. Even though the iPads offer very good hardware, I'd recommend Android, because the software ecosystem is much better.

I have a few Nexus 7 tablets, and a few Android phones. I prefer to read books on the Kindle though as it just seems easier. With the Kindle app for Android you can also read the same books on your Android devices so you can catch up on them when you don't have the kindle or when you are stuck on a crowded train.
[br]ok 8 year old boy wants a tablet.
E is probably his bet bet otherwise a microdot might be the go.
Can you sway him towards powders instead tablets aint what they used to be.

theres always at least one.
he's got no ipod or ipad mate. a small tablet ticks all the boxes. he still reads plenty of books. Mind yr own fkn business
Im sorry if I caused offense by suggesting an alternative.
I do however find it strange that you suggest I mind my own business when you post on a public forum?
Reading back I realise that you were simply asking for a heads up regarding tablets, not should your 8 year old have a tablet so I get that.
So a question regarding forum etiquette, how far should a topic be expanded? Is it Ok to comment as I did above or not? Should the topic be strictly adhered too? Im honestly not sure.

And I thought child labour was a 3rd world problem...
On a more serious note, my daughter has had a tablet since last year (age 6 then). She uses it for everything - photography, videography, drawing, music composition, reading, games, movies. I think it's a great idea - times have moved on, and so should we...
My daughter had one of the cheaper import ones; good while it lasted, huge PIA when the battery died less than two weeks later - wasn't worth the effort trying to repair or refund so now she just uses mine or the wife's but this too is a pain so she'll be getting another one (samsung or ipad) for her birthday. I've got a samsung & its great, wife's got an ipad which was heaps more $$ for what I call bugger all. Both have pro's & cons but to me the only advantage of the ipad is that you can make them near on industructible with the protective covers you can get that make them dust, splash & drop proof (handy for a 6yo that spills & drops what ever she has). Not too sure if the samsung has one of those locator things that we always have to use to try find her ipod when she puts it down, aways claims that the last place she had it & then we locate it using the wifes iphone or ipad in the car, under the dogs bed, in the play room stashed in barbies mcmansion etc etc........don't worry about internet accounts - when away from home wifi thats when games & movies etc can be played.
Why does he need a tablet?
My son Wolfgang spends all his time in the attic composing symphonies. He is only four though.

Depending on what you've got for a phone maybe don't get him a tablet with an Internet plan. If the young fella needs to be at home connected to the wifi or hot spotting off your phone to access the net you might have better control over what he downloads as he gets older?
Either of these should see your son amused for hours.
I always struggled with algebra
I suggest try before you buy. I went in with the idea off buying an android tablet due to the price difference to an iPad. When I used them I hated them and decided I liked the way the iPad system worked. Big price difference but it's what I liked.
I use a Google Nexus 7 3g. While it's not SD upgradeable it already has 32Gig which I've not even half filled. Being the Google device you are always first with the new Android releases (I have 4.2.2 at the mo) and bug fixes. The 1.3GHz quad core processor is outstanding and for a 7" tablet the graphics and screen (1280 x 800) are brilliant. It's easy to "root" and on-the-go cables are about $0.99 on e-Bay.If I could have the same unit with a phone in it I'd have 1 less device to carry.
Failing that, perhaps Viagra?
Arancini leading off with "why don't you teach your kids to read" was your problem there mate. Angrifying first sentence.
Definitely an android tab unless your house is already full of fruit products. Why deprive yourself of usb drag n drop copying, not to mention flash. Cheaper too and you can/should get one with replaceable battery whereas most fruit products have a soldered in battery.
have a Galaxy note 10.1, brilliant, love it! had a cheapy before and found had no GPS so could not use at a Map Plotter on the yacht (maybe your kid wont need that!) the only prob I have with Ipads is you have to use Itune!![]()
Mine's an Asus transformer - nothing to compare it with but happy with it.
+1
Got the TF700 with dock, probably on the expensive side but has lot of features: high screen resolution, micro and full USB ports, micro and full SD card port, extra battery in dock, full keyboard so it can be used as laptop (when docked) or as a tablet (when undocked)
I just spent the weekend with a mate who brought one of these - its not quiet what you are after as its a phone as well -but its unreal. I am going to get one myself. And cheap as chips as well. Super quick processor and a simple and easy to use interface. Why pay te premium for an apple / samsung when thus is out there and its for your kid? Given its size its probably more of an iPad for a child than a phone for an adult.

I am an apple user - phone, iPad, Air etc - all work equipment - but this piece of machinery was unreal.http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-MTK6589-Quad-Core-Android-4-2-THL-W7-W7-W7S-8MP-Camera-1G-RAM-5-7-3G-Phone-/140923262196?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item20cfae54f4&_uhb=1
