The big trick is not to worry about not sleeping!!
It's easy to set up an internal negative feed back loop, then you'll have no hope!!!

Get up, watch TV or read a chapter of a boring book have a cup of milo, then go back to bed and start again.

Don't lay awake in bed worrying that you're not sleeping.

Perfect advice Mike. My brother is a sleep specilist and runs a very busy sleep clinic. I suffer the same problems Pete and this is word for word what my brother tells me. Oh, and no caffine after midday

For herbal stuff try Valerian tabs. They are a natural sedative / relaxant. I normally don't believe in herbal crap but they do work

Get a referral from your GP to a sleep specialist and do the overnight sleep study at the Hospital - may be an underlying condition that is important

id have to say exercise and stress are contributing factors
along with diet.
i dont have a body clock i work 24/7 all round rotating shifts.!!!!
it is very difficult to settle.
you should try and get onto an afternoon shift
mabe there is somthing in your life troubling you? people often use drink and drugs to forget these problems so the mind can rest.?

No sugar, fruit or any sort of heavy food before sleep...
basically nothing in your system that is stimulating.
if you have a fast materialism....cut off point should be
about 3 hours before bed time..and if you have a slow one..you should think about
not having anything after your dinner.

What I have seen and know...is that routine is your best friend..

that could be my problem!......my main meal of day [vegetarian only] is around 1 hour or so before bedtime.

never had sleeping problem before till slipped into this unusual lifestyle of going to bed at 7am and eating not long before.

will eat minimum 3 hours before bedtime and see if it helps.

why materialism

I didn't know that by focusing your life around posessions could give you sleep issues, but I guess it makes sense?

Another vote from me - re; not eating too soon to bedtime, and no glucose/sugars (chockies, sweets, fruit) within 6hrs of bedtime. Main meal should be pre-middle of waking time (or for non-shift workers, breakfast or lunch). I was told not to eat anything heavy after 3pm if I wanted to go to sleep before midnight. If I do, I balance it out with beer!

[edit] - I did!

A lot of exercise, exercising to the point of exhaustion plus two beers.

Drinking beer exercises your arm, therefore drink beer to the point of exhaustion. A good red will be an appropriate substitute.

I find the opposite. I used to go to the gym late in the evenings and if I came home and had a few beers I would stay awake. It would also be bad if I drank a protein shake and tried to get some sleep.

Strangely the beers without the exercise seem to not have the same problem.

My offer to Peter is that I subcontract some of my work to him and he can do it when he is not able to sleep. If it doesn't put him to sleep at least it will get my work done...

When this happens to me, it's usually:

- poor diet,
- lack of exercise,
- too much of a good thing, or
- too much of a bad thing.

I have nightmares or vivid dreams, making for an unrestful sleep if I eat before bed.
2 hours for food, none for beer.

Love your work easty

..SEX..while drinking warm milk of course

No quik fix I reckon, you got to train yourself into it. I've had the same problem and am slowly improving. Regularity is important so try to go to bed at same time, milk does help (not as familiar with sex).

Exercise but never before bed (swimming is my most sleepy exercise), mornings are best or deadly treadly to work or something. No big meals few hrs before.

And when u close your eyes I try and roll them back quite a bit and keep them there and just think of black.

Don't know how to get back to bed after waking tho..repeat steps 1 and 2 maybe or get up and go for a hige run and you probably won't make it through work!

Here's one I heard about and tried... worked for me when I was a stress bunny.

Every sound you hear, say that you can hear that sound (not out loud, just in your thoughts) ie if you hear the clock ticking, keep saying "I can hear the clock ticking, I can hear the clock ticking" when another noise is noticed say that - "I can hear the fan spinning, I can hear the fan spinning"

Just keep saying it in your mind - the theory is that you cant concentrate on 2 things at once so that the 'worry de jour' doesnt get into your head and keep you awake ruminating about other outcomes etc. If it does just gentlt go back to repeating the sounds. I think its a bit like yoga/meditation where you clear your thoughts and think of nothing - but sometimes thats too hard.

temazepam NO!

I got hooked on this in hospital, came off it cold turkey and I didn't sleep for 1 week! It wasn't nice as I was also on pain killers.

1.- Make sure you exercise, swim, cycle, etc...
2.- Raw onions will knock me out, and so will marijuana.

Do you get a sudden adrenalin rush, that makes your heart pump fast and keep you awake? If yes, this is hard to resolve as it's psychological but relaxation techniques could help.

australia's biggest loser had something about this on Friday night. They said that

forcing yourself up at the same time every day
exercising before dinner and dinner 2-3 hours before sleep time
eating your biggest meal at lunch

They didn't mention staying up all night on the internet getting concerned about the NWO but I imagine if you'd been on it then they would have mentioned it...

Chinese herbs are bull****. Chinese people aren't stupid. They seek out proper western medicine whenever they can.

I'll have a think about your problem tonight while I'm at work from 11pm to 7am.

Doing shift work that has very little regularity to it (for the last 24 years) has taught me a thing or two about sleep and that is the more you worry about lack of sleep the less sleep you end up getting. And any sleep is better than no sleep - even if I wake up ten times during the night or grab only 4 or 5 hours sleep after a night shift I seem to get enouggggggggggghhhhhh ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

You WILL survive.....

Used this stuff when I first moved to the US as the 16hr time zone change completely screwed my sleep routine. Seemed to do the trick nicely...
