$50 per hour? That sounds reasonable. I am not sure you can get any tradesman for that rate.

I can sort of understand how/why they charge the way they do. A call out fee would have to cover your travel time, and the hourly rate would need to cover the tools and anything else, plus their actual labour.

I guess if you think it is too cheap, you can try it yourself, although not quite legit :)

I use to help my father do some plumbing jobs, and when it comes time to clean out a sewer, I would be happy for a plumber to do it :)

Well the Plumber who did our office building did... seemingly a mate of the Builder who under bid the next guy by a big margin to win the job...

F#cker was useless... I had to get someone else in to completely strip and re-do a full commercial kitchen as it was completely non-compliant and defective... $18,000. Also had to put in a re-heater for the first floor hot water - another $6,000...

Then last week (15 months on from final PC) the Water Corp contacts us to say that one of our Fire Services supplies has been converted to a 'drinking/use' supply and we didn't pay the Head Works Contribution fee - after a failed appeal etc another $39,000 paid out.

I wouldn't get this bloke to change a hose fitting let alone a tap washer.

yep. but the client is paying for the use of labour, water jetter and sewer camera gear, along with public liability insurance, gst, tax, wear and tear, fuel, vehicle costs, compliance fees, my workers comp, and time spent chasing people for $, stationary, repayments on equipment etc.......
we are a commercial sewer water jet and inspection company and the cheapest one in town.
sands, you dont work for yourself do you?
btw, id like to see your plumbing if you think water and **** does that!

Hi,

All tradies charge high so instead of work full day for $480.00 or there about, they rather work half day for that and sail the afternoon.
It makes sense to me. The benefit of being self employed.

But having said that the tradie has to be very good at his work and professional, if these things are shown on the job site then the customer usually will pay without any issues and you get referral work, but as I mentioned you got to be good.

Kind Regards
Walt

$220 your taking the piss or lying, no way in the world any plumber is worth that much in our current market

If you work full time you earn somewhere over $250k a year(taking into account reduced rate of $150ph after the first hour, if you are to be so generous) ??? Please elaborate how you think you are worth that just because you can read a regulation or a aus standard/cut and weld pipe, are you in housing or commercial

Your not a doctor mate you play with pipes not lives, if you cut something wrong, just get another bit from the shop, if folks pay you that they are damn stooopid

You are one of the reasons that this country has become one of the most expensive in the world

$50ph is cheap for a plumber sands, well in perth anyway, we cant get plumbers under $70 that are any good

^^ mate, its not just plumbing. the standard rate is what we charge for just plain plumbing.
we do the jobs that the plumbers dont / cant do / cant afford the gear to do it - type stuff. Other companies charge more than us for what we do so i can sleep well at night
its more a case of finding a very niche gap in the market, and filling it. must be working cause its heading australia wide now.

Fkn aye to that... Salitiest is right. When you whittle all the sh!t back, and look at true hourly rate, $220 starts to look OK...

BTW - I am not a tradie...

I was being generous saying $ 50 .00 ... I know , its the same here $70 PH Its Just fuoooking mad . And they are not good ... they still need constant supervision , its cronic.
We are all pulling our pudds , tradesmen are not worth any more than $40 ph even with a trailer full of tools. And good Knowledge and skill.

for the record, when we charge the standard rate (110 / hr) look at it this way:

billing hours in 8 hr day is about 6 hrs if doing multiple call outs. $660
less gst $600
less tax (say 25%) $450
less fuel & vehicle / day $18.50 + 31.78 = $50.28 = $399.72
less workers comp $32.88 / day = $366.84
less insurance $354.16
less super $322.28
less holidays 4 week / annum $304.63
less rdo 1 per month $12.04 / day
and theres a few more but i think you get the drift.
these are figures rounded off and not my own, but stuffed if im opening up my books completly to you guys the costings are pretty accurate though.
i think until you run your own business you cant comment too much on what someone can charge unless you know for a fact its too high above market value.

actually, we cut / damage a pipe in the wrong spot with our gear, it can cost $30k. maybe more depending on access and or damage. it can also cost very little like $300 on a good one.

Whatever you do for work - go and get 10 people to poo all over it, hey even better move it out into the blazing sun, and you you still have to do the job covered in somebody elses sh!t.
and then tell me you want less than $50 per hour.

The real problem is that. Assusie tradies ask you: Do you want 10K cash job or 11K inc GST.
Then you always say ok 10 k,cash is fine
but in reality what AU tradies have is 10k + 4 K = 14K for the job worth 6-7k when all taxes are paid as they should be !!
You think you save on GST but in fact Tradies save on undeclared income that should be taxed 40% !!!
OK I will leave you now, most don't even understand why that system is rotten to the bones (once hard working nurse or teacher must report and pay tax on any penny and other plumber and other trades steal in day light and nobody bother.

There is no real solution to that, unless all cash transaction are forbidden and all income taxed.

$50 p.h. not expensive. (for a good one)

Most DIYers end up effing up something, those blokes have to get it right, else they get sued for water damage. They have to carry tools for all sort of situations. They have to do some heavy lifting with hot water tanks and 1-piece gravy bowls. Try to install a 1-piece, they weigh a ton while you have to align the **-hole.

Plus there is no supply anymore, as in supply-and-demand. Young blokes want good money but not get dirty. So we pay what the few left willing to play in someone else's ** ask.

Now if you excuse me, I have to go drop a lawyer or 2 in my 1-piecer...

no avoided the bigguns, but the 2 companies i worked for in sydney years ago, using similar gear as me busted up (flooded) a computer floor of Bank of Hong Kong ($4 million). Another flooded a well known sydney hospital basement carpark in poo -another few hundred thou, and flooded out another upper operating room for 200 or so thou.
ive never caimed on insurance so far, but get 10 mill insurance as a minimum and get a good broker. find out what you can and cant insure for, think of a few more and get prices. never over insure, never under.
