An interesting discussion and it looks like all the arguments that we have had with windsurfing assoc
Our liab insurance will only cover us when competing and it will only cover another competor NOT any of the public.
It will only cover us if we....
wear life jackets
have a rescue boat
risk management plan
So if your a social sailer and never enter a event your money is a donation and your are still at risk of losing it all to some one you,ve never met.
We are currently shopping around for an alternative insurance policy that will provide a 24/7 policy that will cover every one. Most companies says yes then when you look at the fine print its a NO. Sailing clubs are also finding out that their policies don,t cover them for what they thought they had.
The other issue is that only 9 companies can offer insurance into Australia !!!! Not a lot of choice and so much for free market.
The good news is we may have found a policy that offers our club what we want, so keep asking the questions AKSA untill you get what you need and want. Good luck
Over the Years the State and National organisations have had their up's and downs. One thing Ive always seen with 99% of VOLUNTEERS is their passion and commitment to what their doing. Ive seen many knee jerk reactions by councils over the years and this grass roots organisation with bugger all capital goes in and takes on councils.... Ever tried to take on a council in a dispute? The other option is we would have been restricted to one or two beaches just like JET-skis. We are more likely to cause injuries to other beach goers..?..?...
We have a price rise. Go out for a night on the town, or dont just one night...... There's your insurance for the year. Without going into detail WE as kitesurfers got slammed by some payouts as already stated. With the increase of beginners every year, If you like the sport, you have 2 options:
Say something to reckless kiters at you local, and join a cool organisation that will only benefit from your help and imput.(my car rego was $425 for a year, no property insurance)
OR, say nothing to idiots, see near misses and get pissed off that your local just got banned.
How often do you guys change your kites?
My guess is that most of us are changing our kites every second year at least, assuming that you have only one kite (that wouldn't be true for many) that's 800-1000 a year. Even if you only change every third that's still $500-700/yr.
In that respect $120/yr to make sure that not only are you represented at the table if your beach is up for restrictions and that you don't spend the next 10 years of your life paying for a mistake (should you make one) isn't bad if you ask me.
I think there are a lot of people missing the point here, the point isn't the cost, it is the increase. If everyone rolls over and says yes please sir, can I have another (increase)......Who will be still insured if it doubles next year, who is happy to pay $250, I am guessing fewer, how about $500 the year after, then a $1000, you can see where this is going.....
$65 for $10M personal to $20M event coverage is (and always has been) ridiculously cheap.
was'nt there an event up north last year that charged extra for insurance, exmouth i think ?????
Are people still moaning about this???
FFS...
Support your local WAKSA or state association. If you don't want to pay then shut up and stop flapping your gobs.
It's 125$ people. Yeah its increased. But so has most things in life these days. Please if you don'[t want to pay then keep your thoughts to yourself. It's your choice and it really is old news.
Juddy and the Waksa mob do a good job.
I guess they are thoughts developed by a lack of kiting and an increase of boredom. Quite a lot of posts from mid life crisis types who are 'living the dream'. Just ask Mr 'Pioneer of Waveriding' who pisses and moans about most things kite related including the increase of subs for WAKSA.
I recently got my own insurance for teaching for the upcoming season. Wasn't cheap but now I have peace of mind. Insurance sucks, but unfortunately its part and parcel of today's society.
love all the bleeting
get out there and chase some storms and maybe a few mouthfulls later you'll all stfu ![]()
the fees are peanuts for peace of mind, support the people who try to support you even if you don't agree with everthing they do ![]()
btw, been a member since 2006, will be next year, also had my own instructor insurance for 3 years now ![]()
Just trying to keep it SAFE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I purchased my new kite today. Of subject i know but im very happy.
As a carpenter my public liability insurance is $720 a year just in case i drop my hammer on someones foot. $120 a year to kite at my local and support waksa CHEEEEEEEEEEEEP AS BROOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

There was but not this year although I am sure most will be back just to kite![]()
Insurance sucks and they get you from every angle. In Exmouth the insurance covered you if you hurt yourself at an event and the club was covered for public liability. But this argument sorry discussion is about insurance to cover public liability while you do your own thing.
Personally I think everyones jumping the gun a bit it's still a relatively low cost and who say's it's going to increase like that every year

sweet, thanks for clearing that up.
sorry to have to reply to this topic but it seems no one wants to talk to regarding my posts and all the people i want to hear from are on this thread so if anyone has any info regarding KBV and the AGM or any info please tell and for those who might be involved in other state associations who have any info regarding the aksa agm or any info at all please contact me asap. The reason i'd like some info is i'm putting an events team together so we can have some this year and if i'm not contacted soon i will be assuming that KBV is no longer being run and will start the the process of taking over.
hookworm and others - a lot of the info that you are asking about is available (and lots of it has been for a long time)
AKSA AGM minutes are here http://aksa.com.au/Default.aspx?pageId=655513
AKSA Financial reports are here aksa.com.au/Default.aspx?pageId=655512
KBV minutes should be available, but Campbell is out of the country, have you tried contacting them?
www.kbv.org.au/index2.htm
The AKSA events application form is here aksa.com.au/Nationals
AKSA insurance policy info is here with links to the documentation

As always if anyone has any questions please email [email protected] and I will attempt to answer them. On this forum it is difficult to determine what the actual question is.

For the posters discussing the cost of the insurance premium, I am happy if anyone has ideas for finding a cheaper on-shore provider that offers the same terms and has a record of having paid out claims in Australia. The process of getting a reasonable quote takes up quite a bit of my free time at this time of the year, but if you can point in the direction of better options I am all ears email [email protected]
With the current claim history AKSA has I think the only way we can reduce the premium is through increasing safety awareness of members and risk management policies. This will show the insurance providers that we are proactively trying to reduce claims. Having discussions such as this is raising awareness of the need for insurance and I thank you all for taking part with your comments.
As AKSA moves towards National Sporting Organisation status there will be more opportunities to obtain state and federal funding to pay for some events and admin tasks, which will allow the volunteers to dedicate more of their time to reducing accidents and reduce the costs of membership.

Gav
cheers Gav! i also made contact with someone from kbv today so hopefully i can help and get some events on the board for this season
