very sad! i think we have to take a few out!

Terrible news indeed.
WA must now be the worlds no. one shark attack spot.
Not sure if the reporter quite got the location right, 4 km east of wedge would put the surfer inland of the new highway to Jurian
Had the car packed and ready to go with the kids - we were going to stay the night !! Beaches likely closed ? Probably close to where we going to surf too - Slight change of plans now
RIP
Very sad news RIP our ocean loving brother.
This is getting crazy, you have to wonder what is attracting all of these whites lately.
I know they have always been around but speaking to a few crayfishermen I know up at Lancelin who have fished for years up there, they reckon they have never seen as many as this year.
This is very sad to hear, at such a young age too.
And yet the so called specialists say we are not on the menu!!!
We are stealing the fish from the oceans, and we are much easier to catch than seals.
We are not mistakenly taken I'd say we are just easy pickings.
They the sharks have been around for a hell of a lot longer than we have and this has been cos they can adapt, well your initial food source is hard to find and catch they simply find something else.
Enough said when there is a family grieving for the horrific loss of a son.
My condolances
Best wishes to those close to him.
I gave directions to some friends on how to get here on Thursday and they got there today for a surf. Luckily did not make it in, I had a guilty conscience until I got word from them. Brings back the whole shark debate but seriously when do we take action?
Perhaps the Japs would like to carry out some scientific research on these sharks (fins) and let us know there findings, say 2020.![]()
This is really sad news. RIP
How many people are going to die before
this Government has the guts to do something.
We remove everything else from the ocean so maybe its time to get the balance right.
The only people that want to save these man eating sharks are the ones that don't swim.
This is also our play ground.
Liam's just done a interveiw with channel 7 about his encounter with the bronzeeee, not to sure how it went as he's in melbourne, it looked like the same location and this very sad news brought back some horrible feelings.
RIP, and my condolances to all family and friends, Tony.
My condolences to the family!
Me and my mates surf up there at the bombing range all the time and this strikes very close to home.
Looks like melville will have record numbers this summer too..
That is horrible news.
Statistics don't mean anything to me anymore, there are big bloody sharks out there eating people regularly. Bloody scary.
These tragic events are becoming alarmingly frequent. Very sad. I know it's their environment, not ours, but since when has that been an impediment for humans to act. My heart goes out to those involved.
Col
Such a sad event... Condolences go out to the family... and what bravery the young guy on the ski showed...
I just can't believe we keep sticking our heads in the sand... seriously what is the government doing about it, you've taken it into your hands to make all the decisions.. Im sick of all the talk and theories, show us some action...
Andy
Hey Ryland, if we are gonna "take a few out", why don't we take a few fishermen out? These events are happening due to the sole fact that our waters are being "gutted" and there is becoming nothing left for the sharkies to feed on when there traveling up an down the coast.
Let's look at it this way,
About a hundred years ago (for example), how many tonnes of fish were pulled from the ocean each year?
In current times, how many thousands of tonnes of fish are pulled from the ocean daily?
My condolences to the family
Right-on. ^^^
'Super Trawlers' rape and pillage the oceans of everything ...
and can work in any weather.
They mine the sea and all that is left is a marine wasteland.
sad news , but we better get used to it as attacks will increase, its nature every animal needs to feed , less fish in the ocean means less food and less sea lions staple diet of the white, a surfer in a wettie looks similar, if you take note nearly all humans attacked arnt eaten, where sea lions are , so mistaken food source, as for it hitting tourism , itll attract more internationals due to the appeal of going somewhere wild and rugged , if you want proof of how many fish are being pulled out of the ocean you only need to stand on the beach with a rod in your hand or take a boat out , its a fair bit different now than a few years back,
A few mates also had a close call in Greenough after the Drummonds sighting last week. I used to be 100% against killing GW sharks... Today I was thinking to myself "it's only a matter of time till someone I know gets taken"
That's what fear does, it's F"@&$ with your head.
As horrible as the thought is, there is a little bit of truth in the matter.
The Government, I don't think will act, unless (touch wood) a child gets taken. Then I think it would be a free for all- kill 50 of them to look good in the public eye.
I think we have sort of passed a tipping point with the increased whale population and mass fishing. The GW's are here to stay.
Condolences to the family.
My thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time, and to the bravery of the guys who tried to save him we need more like them in the water!
But culling is not the answer there are too many variables involved like current changes, shark breeding, whale numbers increase and are they coming to close to coast or are they associating us as bait how we hang ourselves of the back of a boat in a cage with blood and burley around.Lack of there predominate diet or too many surfers in the water or dawn patrol surfing. What ever it is we may never know but as there has been 5 fatalities in W.A. in the past twelve months and there has been 97 car fatalities in W.A alone this year,so do you worry about getting in your car I think not so try not think such bad events in the water and the way the news sensationalizes it yesterday it was a 4m shark now its a 5m what's it tomorrow 6m.
Condolences to the family and to the guy's mates who saw it go down. Commendation to the ski rider who risked his own life trying to save the guy. Nobody should have to see or do what he did.
As a surfer for over 30 years and kitesurfer for the last two, I have never been rattled by the thought of sharks, until now.
I have spent the last two years teaching my daughter to surf, so she too can enjoy the lifestyle and freedom that I have had, but watching the news yesterday made me think about what if we were out together and either of us got hit......?
Either a daughter seeing her father attacked, or a father seeing a daughter attacked. Absolute devastation for either party.
Cannot believe I am even entertaining the thought of not taking her with me for a while, but I can't get the thought of her being taken out of my mind.
Anyone else had these thoughts?
Am seriously considering teaching her to kite instead
The incident at Wedge is tragic and my condolences to his family and friends.
Media responsibility has taken another blow this weekend. The incident obviously raises a heap of questions about culling GWS's but that's an issue for later when emotions have calmed down.
I'm really unimpressed with the local media, especially online. Perthnow (aka the Sunday Crimes) should hang their heads in shame with the completely unnecessary and sensationalist imagery of a GWS with jaws wide open as their 'front page' photo. Irresponsible, insensitive, un-necessary.
Watoday issued photos & named the guy, despite his family's request for privacy - unbelievably insensitive and irresponsible.
TV stations interviewed witnesses & broadcast way too much info y'day IMO, given the family request.
Poor form from all.
As usual Juddys mind & my own are in complete syncopathic harmony. ![]()
Media shows no responsibility at all. Absolutely disgusting.
But what can you do. They do it cos sensationalism sells.
It will only be kerbed if human nature was to be kerbed.
If we collectively chose to not buy or watch then the problem would solve itself.
WONT HAPPEN.
Human nature is to blame - on both sides.
Maybe we should feed them to the sharks, might put a foul taste up them so bad they will never come close to shore again...... ![]()
My brother surfed this exact spot not long ago. We are both rattled and one dude has said earlier reconsidering our water time. You can't ignore this, although we probably will, but it is hard not to.
We also surf some serious looking snarky waters between Walpole and Denmark, that too needs reconsidering. This is too close to home now.
Can only imagine what family is going through not too mention the POst traumatic stress the dude on the jet ski must be going through.
The only thing is he died doing what he loved rather than rust away one day in some retirement home. But that is the only small grace I can come up with. Must have been a damn big shark with a damn big temper to do that.
Yeh for the first time I have to admit I'm rattled.
