well maybe the truth is stranger than fiction
surfing left handers, crisp offshore, 4-6, breaking off the bubble
you and 2 mates and a couple of friendly locals
boating to strikko's, no one out, 6 ft a frames, glassy offshore
kiting contacios you and a mate, no one to be seen, apart frm the start of the pack at brighton in the distance
nostalgia or the way it was?
Not kiting over this limit. Well forget 80 percent of summer days lancelin up and 70 percent south of this. The figures are made up but they are probably close.
I suppose we should be thankful there's 1000's of strange kooks kiting. It should deter the 10's of 1000's of surfers from starting.
I laugh
Kiting is for kiters your a special bread
Ive listened to countless crew blert there bleter, about kiting when it started out how good it is and how i had to do it and windsurfing was finished. blar blar blar
Ive watched crew convert to kiting to return and or do both watched new crew start with out a back ground ,,,,but always laughed as youve promoted, raved and ranted as if yous were first on the moon.
I new there would be a saturation point at most locations and yous would curse the day you told other doods about a place no one goes ..........and to get into kiting.
The the second prodiction was kiters would turn on kiters for dropping in crossing tampon strings and jumping to close etc etc etc (the list of **** goes on).
The greatest thing is now you got other kiters to play with you can leave us windsurfers in the line up alone to slash, shread, carve, smack out arials and slaye the dragon in peace.
Ps Open your mind dragon slayers yous aint the GOLDEN BREAD and or KELLY SLATER so fk off
slash, shread, carve, smack out arials and slaye the dragon...?
Is that what you are doing then? I alway wondered what the whole point was behind your mechanical procession, but it's all clear now. wow and i thought it was a lame ass waste of time. cool, at least I know now.
You all may remember what windsurfing was like in Perth during the late 80's and early 90's, if not due to the fact that many may not have been born or aware it was awash with sails. All the boys reckoned it would be banned but a funny thing happened.... people got bored with setting up, being ripped off for gear, got married had kids etc kiting will go exactly the same way in a few years so don't stress. The truly committed will stay and continue to enjoy it forever just like the small band of windsurfers you see dotted amongst the kites. For many this is the cool thing at the moment but they will soon fade away. bring on the winter swell I say and we can enjoy the real thing.
no worries some swell coming, by the way your bro is a well balanced young man and is not prone to violent outbursts, even if busloads of crew arrive at "your" spot and proceed to f**k everything up for you!
I would have to agree with the last two comments. Kiting is not only easier to learn, and to progress much quicker, it is still evolving - although some might say the rate of increase has evened off, there is still room for technological advances.
Especially in the waves, where windsurfers still I believe, (unless you are a pro), actually surf the waves - even more so in large swells.
And one kiter has a planning 180 degree radial arc of 20-25 metre damage potential, and this arc of chaos can be transposed quickly through a trick or jump.
One kiter takes up far more space than a windsurfer. A windsurfer coming down the line takes up little space, a kiter needs to whole bloody wave to account for line lengths.
yes windsurfers pose less a hazardous potential (excuse the poor grammer).
And more to the point - how much damage can a learner do on a windsurfer - even when planning, easy to kill wind in the sail. A learner on a kite has great potential to incurr damage.
The guys in this industry who have been around for a while, have influence, including shop owners, event organisers etc may be the ones to prepare the sport for what will occur. Especially those with a financial interest or dependance on the sport. They ban kiting in certain spots, cost me a couple of thousand, ban kiting with drop in sales, peoplecould lose their entire business. Money talks, bull**** walks - these guys in my opinion need to step up - and many of them are, through their schools,
my suggestion: A group, even if ideas can be emailed etc at the start, with people who have their families financial interest based in the sport, need to put their heads together - and drive the changes needed (many of them pointed out in this post). A lot of these guys I know are extremely dedicated people, with wise heads on their shoulders and understand this sport and it's evolution better than anyone as a lot of them were their at the start.
Yep we can all hold hands a sing the ballad of 'local respect - community education' (which is needed), but in the end those with a long term economic interest in the sport - need to drive this...
maybe, just a thought really? Anyone agree?
Some interesting comments, especially from Eppo, but you need some help with your literacy skills- "grammer" hahaha!! not good mate. Anyway, what is with the lack of comps in this so called sport. A sport is generally defined by its competitive nature. The Euro's are up and running and I'm not sure about the east coast but in the west there is virtually no competitive edge to the "sport". All fledgeling sports that have established respect, regulation and honour have done this through competition. It seems to me that kiting will be sacrificed/crucified because it doesn't have clubs, comradery and good old Ozzie competitive spirit. I read somewhere that an Olympic bid was brewing or planned, good luck with that. Golf only just made it and this is the most popular and well organised sport in the world. Kiters in West Oz will need to get their s**t together, organise yourselves and you'll find that visiting awesome spots with some order will give you a sense of brotherhood/sisterhood and when councils start to regulate you may need to present a united front, rather than the loose band of poser/disrespectful mavericks than one may observe on any given windy Sunday, if one kid gets hurt you are screwed. It has worked for virtually every new "sport" so organise and compete!!
Good onya Pete sounds like you have got it covered, your right it's all good, I got some sweet waves today too. ![]()
