Hi TL,
I was referring to the crew who had no intentions of racing, just crossing. Please re-read my original post. I didn't know who was strapped or strappless, only that some went strapless. If you had a choice, you would not RACE in open ocean, choppy-as-hell water with no straps. You obviously did what you could and finished respectfully considering.
All I am saying is there was a heap of crew who missed out last year and I'm sure there were some serious racers amongst them.
DM
Yes I do agree with you Darren, if it is a race then those that intend on racing should get a gig. I purchased a heavy, narrow, strapped, low rocker board earlier in the year for using in nuking conditions but also with the Rotto race in mind (if I am lucky enough to get a start).
If I knew for sure and certain I was in I may even make a custom board (and I am sure others would to) and yes it definitely would be strapped.
However when I read "strapless FFS" and I knew there was only two of us that were strapless I felt I should clarify why I chose to compete that way last year.
hope I get a place again this year, but dont know how serious Im going to be. may have a smile on my face again from ear to ear...
How do they choose who is allowed to race? I have not been a member for very long so I feel I perhaps may not have the same shot as someone who's been part of the WAKSA since day dot.
Any thoughts?
"How do they choose who is allowed to race? I have not been a member for very long so I feel I perhaps may not have the same shot as someone who's been part of the WAKSA since day dot. "
maybe a cash or beer donation?
for the strapped surfers have you been going the hole deal and putting grip down as well or just straps over the wax?
Who'd of thought a 40min (max) crossing would create such controversy.
Hope i get picked, gonna get me a new waterproof fax and small concrete blocks just in case.
Send en over in waves...first the serious qualifiers with their race boards, then those with twinnies, etc.....let the last wave body drag if they want...it is about having a personal go and fun. It would be sad if Kent and I were the last to do it strapless![]()
I'll pay $300 to the first person to ride over on a cafeteria tray............Rowdy?
pkra vs rotto race=non issue
rotto vs gc=non issue
how many serious punters would be bothered about trying to attend both anyway, so who cares for the 5 people who would or sponsored to do so
cant wait this year, hopefully get a spot on the rotto run, strapless esky lid for me
Well if this is so popular (and I know I am keen) maybe this could be expanded into all catorgies (race/fun) and have a entry fee (as I'm sure they do anyway) that raises money for a charity or a fundraiser for the wa kiters. Surely it is not to expensive to have a couple of safety boats. (the helicopter can follower racers) and if there is so many people I'm sure we can help eachother if there is a problem
Genius I know
Ok - Read all the posts (and the B.....S..t)

Seems no one has forgotten the debacle with the '15' real out of the hat competitors - that went on last year ![]()
If it becomes a debacle again this year - it will be their own Undoing and become a small country town joke, just read the above posts and the 'read' count!
Im sure RED BULL marketing would think twice about sponsorship also.
I say just be patient and see what theyve learnt for the entry criteria this year.... ![]()
My birfdee on the 3rd.
Oh pweez pweez can I go racing before I am too old and decrepit?? ![]()
Fingers, toes and nutz crossed. ![]()
I like dave's idea of 3 basic catagories BTW. But not like I'm gonna be hassling for the podium, just happy to be out there blasting accross.![]()

I know I won't be there but i reckon it's a race and the fastest qualifiers should get the spot then have a massive wave of freeriders.
Didn't the organisers freely admit last year that because it was the first time the event had been run they were limiting the competitor numbers and scope of the event, to keep it manageable and prove that it could be done? Fifty competitors with no lost kiters or significant dramas is a great outcome for the first year. Imagine if they had 350 competitors but 30 of them got their bearings wrong and all ended up going around in circles halfway to Two Rocks? It would be a public relations and insurance nightmare and govt approvals and sponsorship dollars needed to run the event would never, ever be granted again.
I get a look in at the inner workings of events like these both large and small on a regular basis, the effort, time, resources, money, blood, sweat and tears (almost always by volunteers) that go into running an event of this scale is often and easily overlooked by people that turn up on the day and have a go. The organisers will make mistakes and things can always be done better.
Look at the Lancelin Ocean Classic, after 25 years it is a slick, well run event, over four days, but last year one marker boat was out of place for the marathon and was 1 NM further out to sea than it should have been. One sailor popped all of his flares and was only rescued quickly because one boat observer just happened to spot the top of his mast between swells.
Presumably the organisers keep an eye on threads like this and look to incorporate some of the ideas thrown out there. Hopefully on the back of last years success competitor numbers increase, if this year goes well ,increase it again next year.
I have been thinking, If I don't get a run this year, I am going to put my hand up and volunteer.
I love the sport, its an awesome event- I want to be a part of it regardless if I get the call up or not.
ahahahaha- they kicked out/wont let kiters in the ledge to lano race so i say they have burnt their bridges there of any kiters letting them in on a kiting race!!!!!!!!!!!!

Turn up and have a go, because its a water way, we may never get a go anyway, in this current world climate things are going flop - just like pkra gold coast, better now than never start pumping up your kite!
