Uber , have a chat with Rick from Kurnell. He had an interesting encounter with one of those " Lean,Mean, Eating Machines " at Boatharbour the other day.
The way Rick explains it is that he lost a lot of weight very quickly via a small orafice in the southern region. Looks like Boaties is becoming a regular feeding ground for the " kite chompers "
cheers

Hey Col,

Was going to head out to Kurnell today when the NEaster kicked in. However theres nothing

I was out there Tuesday @ Wanda and someone saw a pod of dolphins and a big mumma sharkee chomping on some bait fish.

I cringe when I remember the time 5 months ago, I was floating for 90 mins from Boat Harbour to Wanda trying to re-launch my kite.

There have been a few sightings at Boat Harbour in the past 6-8 months.
Mine was actually the closest. While trying to see what that big brown thing in the water was, I nosed into the chop and actually fell on top of a 2.5M Bronze Whaler.
Not sure who got the biggest fright, but didn't hang around to compare stories.
I think I set a new speed record getting back to the beach. Don't remember touching the water on the way back.

Yet another close encounter sighting at Woodies last week.
Man-sized (plus a bit) man-eater right in the shallow water at the point.
Spotted by 2 different kiters in rapid succession.
Sent all kites to the beach even more rapidly, leaving the breeze & the flat water vacant.
I really dont think anyone should kite Woodies till they sort out this predatory population problem - it just seems to keep growing

The buggers are hungry...sick of eating the floaties from the raw sewage........sooner or later one of them is going to taste the delights of a human wettie sandwich.........yum.

Yea, a couple of guys saw the beast on Friday....but Reli and I went to look for it and couldn't see a thing. Just like the Shark Bay downwinder...everyone saw the buggers but me. I'm happy I don't see them, because I really don't want to. I know they are out there and looking at us...but what can you do, they were there first. And if our oceans wouldn't be raped and pillaged the way they are, these beasts wouldn't have to come in so close and eat sewage and humans.

more 'bull' stories from the master
Actually Mr Dachopper, talking of 'bull', I heard recently that bull sharks account for more human attacks world wide than all other species put together.

2-3 weeks ago a kiter was doing a run from Wanda Beach (North Cronulla) to Boat Harbour and saw a 3.5-4mtr Great White. On his tack back from Boat he saw the shadow and as it got closer realised it was a great white from the shape of its body. As he headed for the beach and hit the shore-break it turned around and wasnt interested anymore.

Seemed like it didnt like the shallows and/or didnt like the idea of munching a kiter.

Experienced kiter of over 5 years. So im not going to dispute his claims plus the area is getting a very popular name for sharkee sightings.

Pod of dolphins was also seen at the area a while later.

If anyone else was there to clear the story up, please do so.

Hmmmm glad it wasnt me!

I was pole boarding once and bailed a back loop from about 5m up and when I hit the water it was like it was knee deep. It actually jarred my back and I almost kneed myself in the face cos I compressed so much.

Weird thing was it was well over 4 metres deep. Still to this day I don't know what I landed on but it was gone in a flash. Quickest water start I have ever done. Almost walked on water!!

Hey Uber,

Seriously great topic. Had me in stitches, has helped to pass the odd night whilst working. Anyway, found the a much cheaper alternative to the shark shield and it has been tested extensively in SA (Seth Ifrika) off Seal Island against Great Whites and works a treat, according to the propaganda.....

Check out: www.sharkcamo.com

On a closing note, I grew partly in South Africa in the Cape (now live in the U.K.), knew a fella who got taken by a Great White and lived to tell the tale. Lost his left leg below the knee swimming in the atlantic, his mates managed to drag back on board the boat before the shark could finish him off

Monster shark swallows diver in Jaws-style attack
FRED BRIDGLAND IN JOHANNESBURG

A SCUBA diver was swallowed almost whole by a great white shark yesterday in a Jaws-style attack just offshore from Cape Town.

Conservationists are now expecting renewed calls for killer sharks to be hunted down following the death of medical student Henri Murray, 22 - the latest in a series of attacks. Great whites have been a protected species in South African waters since 1990, but calls for a cull have been growing following the deaths of several South African swimmers and surfers this year.

Two British surfers survived - although one needed 200 stitches to leg wounds and the other had to have 100 stitches to torn hips and buttocks. In yesterday's attack, Mr Murray's diving partner, 23-year-old Piet van Niekerk, shot the great white with his speargun in a desperate attempt to drive it away, but he did not see his friend again.

Dave Estment, a yachtsman, was sitting on the jetty at Simon's Town, near Cape Town, when he saw the great white breach the surface.

"It was incredibly fast. The two spear fishermen were not far from the beach. Suddenly a huge shark surged from under the water taking the one diver [from his legs upwards] to his arms in its jaws," he said.

"It must have been massive to have done that. Then the shark and the man just vanished." Other witnesses to the attack estimated the shark's length at 20 feet.

Hundreds of onlookers lined the coastal road yesterday as a helicopter, police diver and boat search was carried out in an unsuccessful attempt to find the body of Mr Murray, who was studying at the University of Stellenbosch.

Divers from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) recovered a weightbelt - so damaged that it looked as though it had been sliced through with a knife - a mask, a speargun, a rubber flipper and a buoy with speared fish that had been attached to a trailing line.

NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon said he believed the shark could have been attracted by the fish. Great white shark tour operators, who lower visitors in cages among the great whites, use chopped-up fish to lure sharks to the cages.

Dr Cleeve Robertson, head of Cape Town's emergency services, said Mr Van Niekerk, a university friend of Mr Murray, was extremely traumatised by the attack.

He and members of Mr Murray's family were receiving counselling.

Dr Robertson said the spear, designed for smaller fish, was unlikely to have caused much damage to the great white.

holy **** a couple of my friends dive there and i have to only 5 months b4 the attack

Andrew....you forgot to mention that to me Sat morning as you left the beach...maybe that's a good thing as me and Kev were spooked enough as it was with the big one that was seen recently.

Here's a question I'm intrigued to have answered, my apologies if anyone is offended by the content:

We all know Sharks are attracted to many things when hunting and one of those is blood.....so what I'm interested to find out is that when a female is menstruating would the change in scent be an attraction to the sharkies??? I'd like to know if there is any proven scientific facts on this.

My mate just came back from diving with whale sharks at exmouth/ningaloo. Swam with an 8m Shark! They have a light plane spotting sharks and guiding in the dive boat, then chuck everyone in just infront of the oncoming shark. Problem is apparently about twice a year, the plane gets it wrong and the stick everyone infront of a huge tiger shark! He also said the scientists reckon the whale sharks are there all year round, not just in "season" as previously thought.

sharks are not the biggest danger on the water its other people as far as i'm concerned. give me a quiet place to kite aNYDAY... I've been stuck on a beautiful little island in the torres straits for 14 weeks with no kite and resorted to snorkelling the reefs whenever i could instead. My god! i saw at least 3 sharks over 5ft long everytime i went snorkelling. One that was well over ten ft swam right past me before i even knew he was there. Armed with my trusty spear and knife i would have been dead before even thinking about using them. Instead it swam past elegantly and completely not interestd...

give up the shark fascination. why don't you talk about car crashes or something instead, there are more of those a year...
