Paddling up the point at Lennox head, NSW, about a month ago. Saw something appear under the front of my board and wondered what it was as it was pretty big; looked behind me and saw the tail (still underwater, but behind my board). I froze and watched the rest of the +- 3.5 meter Tiger slide under me... I had no idea their tails were sooooooo bloody long!
I can tell you safely that you can go in ANYWHERE over the rocks at Lennox!
Just about to go the chrissy lunch, w8n for the parents...
I am so glad I finally learnt to get up on my board this morning; reading all these shark stories in places I go!. I must've been a big lure for the past 3 weeks body dragging, and WHAT? GWs at fingal spit? I spent 3 hours bodydragging there on the 21st...
Well... at least this may serve as motivation for me to STAY on my board and possibly go faster hehe...
Have a great christmas everyone!
When your in the water, there is always that little jingle in the back of your head that everyone remembers from Jaws. But seriously, Kiteboarding would have to be safest water sport when sharks are concerned.
If only a few surfers get attacked every year in Australia and they spend almost their entire session in the water, then a few minutes to collect your board and get cruising again is nothing to be concerned about.
Over here in South Oz Whyalla, we will get reports almost everyweek of shark sightings at the jetty. I personally havent seen one yet, but they are definately around.
Check out this little puppy accidentally caught on a longline at Pt Lowely. Call me what you want, but I'd hate to know what the Pointer numbers would be if it wasn't for longliners cleaning up a bit of seajunk every now or then.
i had the pleasure of seeing two sharkies today out at narrabeen.
Been kiting most of the day and first saw a little shark about a metre long.
then later when i was almost finished up.. saw one about 2 metres long.. they were just crusing around with their fins out..
Dunno what it is with sharks this year but they seem to be everywhere around Sydney. Brendon and I had a lunchtime surf at WhiteRock off the N tip of Long Reef last Wednesday--waves were big, fat and shifty, hard to catch and after about 30 min decided to pack it in when Brendon nearly got sucked off his board by the vortex when a shark as wide as his surfboard swam directly underneath at a mackingly rapid clip. Went past so fast he didn't have a chance to see what kind it was--"big, black and really wide" he said. We decided to go in after that.
she was swimming in ningaloo i think or someplace and she was pretty far out...
they then swam around a point into a lagoon and went onto the beach then they turned around and saw a massive tiger shark..2-3 meters that had been swimming behind them the whole time.
i have another one but about dolphins....we were fishing in a dinghy at augusta when we saw a massive pack of dolphins come to where we were fishing .........
then they started fishing....it was amazing ...they would seriously start plaining at around 20nots looking food
I saw a shark at nigaloo reef also. Just a reef shark when i was snorkelling. Tried to get closer, but it swam away too fast.
You didn't happen to be about 8 when Jaws came out in the movies were you? cause ever since then i keep thinkin the dam things are gonna jump out at me throught the shower plug hole!
I had a mate of mine show me these photos of somewhere up near forster the other day (up from me in Sydney).
It was of him and his girlfriend swimming near a jetti, a few meters out from them was a silohoutte of a shark... the freaky bit was that they never even noticed it was there until they looked at the photo LOL!
Was pretty big too ![]()
Heya!
Saw a mini shark today off Swanbourne, WA.
First one I formally identify in 4 years of kiting. I initialy saw a fin 15 m in front of me and I thought that it was a dolphin as I saw two dolphins a few days ago, but then the fin looked very different to a dolphin's one and when I passed at 2 m from it, i could see the little beast and the little vicious head ![]()
It was tiny, probably around 1.5 m long, but I would not like being tasted by it.
It did not end the session, nor the jumping...![]()
No idea what type of shark it was. i m not a shark expert.![]()
Now I believe that sharks exist...![]()

I live in Sydney!!! No chompies like that here!
Well heres an interesting one for Perth Melvile kiters
Was out this afternoon, decided to try my new 7.5m Boxer sle - have previously only used C's. The wind was up enough, did a few runs close melvile beach rd launch area - then went for a blast way over towards Troy park, its about chest deep at sandbar about 300m out...
The fun begins ![]()
The wind drops out a bit
so I waited chest deep, on the sandbar for it to pick up before heading back.. kite crashes & inverts (lull) Dam !!
I turned my head to look for the next wind line..
and F##k me
about 30ft away a Shark fin ( pointed - not rounded dolphin) about 25cm high (hand to elbowish) cruises to my left for several meters - before disappering. F##k F##k F##k I kept looking then it reappears this time with its fin heading straight at me... bugga, looking alot like attack mode.
F F F yes i was crapin.
Ok. chill - breath - relax, relase safety on kite ?? Na. lets see that MFkr
take me attched to a Kite (Im feelin alot like bait on a hook on a line
) & grabbed my board ready to "bend back some more teeth" ...
I waited & waited but nothing ! It had gone.
I managed to relaunch after about 15 mins, lines all tangled but could hold it steady enough to get back. Phew - talk about adrenalin rush.
Some of the windsurfing guys said it mustve been a dolphin theres no sharks here,
I have swam,w/surfed,skied & boated with dolphins and know what they look like !!!
I googled swan river sharks, the Anglers fishing posts say its common to have bull sharks in there & always have been...
Cheerz .. bait on a hook ![]()
Great white shark 'in lake'
Arjun Ramachandran
July 9, 2008 - 4:46PM
Police issued a warning today after a seven-metre great white shark was reportedly netted and freed in a Central Coast lake.
A commercial fisherman reported to police that he netted the monster in waters at a popular school holiday vacation spot at Tuggerah Lake.
The fisherman reported snaring the seven-metre shark in nets he had cast off Canton Beach, at the northern end of the lake about 5.30am today.
"He claimed that he actually caught the shark in his net and the shark came up and started thrashing about, and hit his boat,'' said Chief Inspector Tim Winmill said.
"He said it was bigger than his boat - he's got an 18-foot boat and he said it would have been about 21 feet.
"Tuggerah Lakes is only about 12 kilometres long and five kilometres wide.
"It's not a big lake but it's a bloody big shark, if it's true.''
The shark was last seen heading south towards the middle of the lake, Chief Inspector Winmill said.
Mick Crowe, president of nearby Soldiers Beach Surf Club, expressed surprise there had been reports of a shark in the lake.
"That's quite bizarre if that's the case - Canton Beach is only ankle-deep water for the first 150 metres,'' he said.
But the Department of Primary Industries and the Fisheries Department both believed the fisherman's claims, Chief Inspector Winmill said.
"They believe he's a credible witness, he's been a commercial fisherman for a long time, he's well aware of species of sharks ... they don't have any reason to doubt the truthfulness of his allegation.''
The fisherman would not speak publicly about his encounter with the great white.
"He's adamant he doesn't want to speak to any form of media, he's an elderly gentleman who has a mistrust of the media,'' Chief Inspector Winmill said.
Saw this news story today....yikes!

Sharkman can put sharks under a spell. Apparently on discovery channel
"In Sharkman Rutzen hopes to change attitudes by revealing sensitivity to the phenomenon called 'tonic immobility' when a shark falls into a kind of hypnotic trance after being inverted or touched on its head in a particular way."
I watched that show a while back. He is completely barking mad. At one point they lost count of how many big white pointers were in the water with him. He had no cage, and visibility was a couple of metres.
However, he didn't get eaten, and his tonic thing is amazing. Seeing sharks like that was awesome. They seem to enjoy it, they prefer to come back to him, than go to the dead fish he had behind him.
Was working and missed this show on channel 7 about Bull Sharks! Anyone see it?

Bull Sharks (2004)
Most people think that the great white shark is the world's deadliest shark- it's certainly true that it's the largest flesh-eating fish, and is responsible for most of the recorded shark attacks every year. However, the bull shark may actually pose more of a threat to us; it is found all over the world and can survive in freshwater, an incredible feat unmatched by virtually all other sharks. It is often found in shallow waters (the same place we like to swim) and is a proven man-eater. In this film I'm looking at the natural history of this beautiful shark and meeting scientists who are carrying out some amazing studies into its life cycle. I also met up with some people who have survived close-encounters with this fish, and highlight the fact that shark attacks are remarkably rare events- even an attack by the world's deadliest shark is one of the rarest events on the planet.
