YES, but may be fiddly and easily released by mistake.
Also may tangle more creating a hazard. Good design will overcome these hurdles tho.
BTW - I prefer the term safety leash. ![]()
Its pointless because theres no way you can reach the far end once youve released the chicken loop, however it probably would be a good idea as the amount of newbs that turn up here with it hooked up the wrong way round is incredible,to the point where i had to argue with a guy on the beach the other day cos he was adamant he had it rigged properly cos that how his instructor told him to rig it,the only way he would listen was when we releasd his loop to test it and there was no way he could then release the safty, unless his arm grew a metre or so.![]()
Slave, do you have any confirmed stats on deaths by 'death leashes' as you really seem unable to let this whole thing go...? Or is it just that when you were learning you attached yours the wrong way and had a wewy wewy bad expewience??
Hi Stevo,
Search for a thread called 'Kitemare at Pt Walter'.
Shan posted a warning about her near-death experience all due to a stupid death-leash.
She was lucky she wasn't killed.
Others have not been so fortunate.
It's all on record - do a search.
I reckon leashes should have no quick releases and everyone should have to ride pulley bars again, wean out the stupid.
I read that thread at the time Slave. It's just that you seem to have an unhealthy obsession with the whole leash story when there are so many other things that can also potentially go wrong whilst kiting. I just wonder - and I'm sure it will come as no surprise to you that I'm not alone here, why you chose this cause to bang on endlessly about??
The simple answer is not the leash, I have no quick release on my "Death Leash" and have never had a problem.
If the sh!t hits the fan then my release is on my harness.
Always in the same place, always within reaching distance.
Never put on the wrong way around.
The harness is the best place to put any last resort quick release.
Check it out.
Best invention ever.http://www.kiteboarding.com/proddetail.asp?prod=SLNGSHT_SRFRSPREADRBR
serious question: im considering ditching my death leash due to all the crazy sh!t it causes. im learning bulk spinny flicky thingos so what happens when i crash and let go of my bar? do i swim after the kite or should i have 20 kites pumped on the beach ready to go?
what happens to all the people down wind when my kite does a runner?
do you think we can be friends after i ditch mine?
can you show me how to take it off my harness?
Maybe they should ban anything being connected to a kite, just to be safe.
Seemed pretty safe just holding on when I learnt. Anyone down wind of me were in danger though.
there are a lot of different style leashes on the market ,two of the best i have used are the latest naish and griffin style ones, basic design just a foam covered pu tube and a stainless pin works every time and is a grab and push away system just like the main release so no confusion, some of the worst ones are the loop or strap pull ones ,they seem to work 50% of the time and are a pain in the arse.
Basically you shoud test your system under load (hook it to a static object and lead hard into it) to see how it works and get used to it,i've had ones in the past that jam under load if you have one like this swap it for a good one, most modern ones work well but beware of old rubbish.![]()
dude "that was such a narly session"
man "yeah dude i was tweaking out some serious tricks"
dude "but man what happened "
man "i had to let go dude , it all went to shyte"
dude "your soooo lucky man, you didnt have a death leash"
man "yeah a good call, could of been worse"
dude " i duno man"
man " ?!##$%!?"
dude "the 12 year old kid downwind your kite fked up...."
man "dude thats just the sport, its extreem"
dude "oh yeah"
Slave, if you really gave a sh!t you would design and publicise a system that works in line with your ideas and standards, including functioning for those who unhook and drop the bar now and then. You would patent and retain rights on the design but make it available to all manufacturers at a trivial cost. That way kiters stay even safer, you get an ego rub, you also get some royalty pocket money, and the cost of kites goes up a tiny amount that nobody really notices.
Put your money/brain/good intentions where your mouth is or spend the rest of your life as a ranting outcast.
<<<<<Whats that double ended thing going through your
skull slave?? Sure looks kinky.. Not your design for a death leash
is it?![]()
