Hi Guys

I thought people here should probably be aware of the impact that public comments on Seabreeze have on kiting in Australia and the potential impact these have on bans in some kiting

I would imagine comments from a forum hold as much influence as a fart in a cyclone.

Do you really think your changing the world from behind your keyboard?

Are we actually aloud to complain about the public.

We all kite in 200 meter area at Brighton and you always get a few swimmers and
surfers that go out right in the middle of our zone
.

They have the entire beach to swim but pick that area.

Sigh..

This is the attitude that constantly amazes me.

Yes - I understand it takes a 'special' kind of person to think it is a good idea to wade out in an area with 20-30 kites operating and not think that it might be hazardous..

But the thing that sticks with me about comments like the one above is the terratorial claim that it is 'our' spot.

So how did it become our spot exactly?

Brighton was a windsurfing spot for decades before kiters shoved their way in.
It was/is a popular surfing spot for a long time before that.
And it has been a very popular swimming spot a LOT longer.

That's why there is a kn big carpark adjacent.. no coz it would make surfing/sailing/kiting more accessible.

Whilst you might say "Why don't the punters go up the beach a few hundred metres" (to the kite/sail exclusion area)..when you stop to consider that there is 4km of relatively vacant beach to the south of Brighton I think the "our spot - fk orf" philosophy becomes laughable.. and selfish.

We have kilometres of open spaces to choose from - a lot like Woodies I can't fathom why so many choose to go out a a small spot..

Same goes for landing right in the walkway - or north or walkway after a downwinder. Ami I missing out on free beers by landing 50m south before the walkway or sumpin??

Brighton is an area not excluded and available for kiting - as it is for ALL other non-excluded activities.

That's the bit that unfortunately doesn't seem to register with most kiters.

If Joe public chooses (unwisely IMO) to wade out into the Brighton surf on a 20kt arvo (likely as it is his/her only opportunity to get out there for the week or similar) then bully for us.

We are the ones opperating the gear capable of taking someone's head off - we have to make damn sure we expect others to be out there and ride accordingly.

You are so soft get Funky, stop bending over and stand up for your sport.

Swimmers have a designated area so why cant we have one.

Stand up for your sport and stop apologising for doing it.

Yes.

I suggest you sit through a council meeting where they are deliberating a ban on kitesurfing at one of their locations.

People opposing kiting will cite evidence - such as sexist, inflammatory and/or derogatory posts from kiters (or trolls) - and use them to argue that kiting should be banned.

Given there are some recidivists who choose to post on SB in this way, and just don't seem to get it, it seems either they must be blocked, or posts on bans must be blocked, or WE WILL LOSE MORE KITING LOCATIONS.

-disrespect designated patrolled swimming zones
-general disregard of the public's safety.

Or more simply - don't behave like a kiter.

Drag yourself away from the mirror long enough to realise it is ignorant "our area" attitudes that will cost us all dearly Oriface.

Not soft - just not stoopid and selfish.

Oh - and of course the knobs that ride thru swimmers 3 metres off the beach in the excluded zone between City beach groins aren't helping either. Hello shirtless Naish Park rider - yes I did call you a fkn idiot and to fark orf - but then you know that.. just as I'm pretty sure from your cheeky fkd up grin you knew you weren't meant to buzz swimmers in that zone.[}:)][}:)][}:)]

These threads wont stop the idiots.
Self regulation hasnt stopped the idiots.
Zoned kite areas hasnt stopped the idiots.

Kites and swimmers dont mix.
Ban kiteing on all busy city metrosexual beaches.Simple.Problem solved.
With more and more kiters every year, its gunna happen anyway, you just cant have 500 kites on a busy swimming city beach.

You arent alowed to water ski through a busy swimmers city beach but you think its ok to do the same on a kite?

Dont know why you would want to kite in the middle of a busy area with 100 other kiters in the water, swimmers, joggers, dog walkers, little kids anyway.
Sounds like hell.

Realy? *sarcasm*
So what makes someone want to cite evidence in a city council meeting or whatnot to ban kiting? It would'nt be all the city and metro kiters who insist on all going to the exact same spot, riding amoungst crowded beaches and scaring swimmers in popular beaches would it???

Just a thought as im literaly sick of reading about this topic over and over. If it has gotten to the stage as mentioned in the qoute above, its too late people. someone is already pissed right off at us, as a whole, and crying on here isnt gonna help.

While we are here why dont we ask the good people at Youtube.com to kindly remove any and all videos of "kitemares" or kites chasing dogs etc etc, just incase that gets used as evidence as well. . . .

I'm afraid this man has grasped it. Spot on. Prohibit kiting at metrosexual spots. Bring on the signs and big fines.

Got a phone call from a friend last Thursday evening (wasn't out, seabreeze marginal). She was swimming in the shallows in front of the Rondevue Hotel in Scarborough. Several kiters showponying around. When she surfaced after a dive she was under 'a red kite'. As she tried to swim away she realised her legs were painfully wrapped in the lines. When finally freed by bystanders she got an cheeky fked up grin apology from the guy. Nice one, dude.

Time up for kiting popular swimming beaches. Give it up, let it go, time to face reality. And please don't gimme this ****e about self regulation & that I should have gone and talked to him. Get real, I was watching the 7.30 Report a few k's away

Whenever dealing with comments on public use of beaches, the comments made are (or may) be monitored by the non-kiting community and any negative comments may impact on our ability to use beaches in future.

A good point Saffer and one that seems to have been verified by Puppet and Judy, who have actually been to the council meetings and heard the arguments from the anti-kitesurfing groups.

Saffer said...

Immature comments made in some of the threads relating to the use of beaches and other public are not welcome.

Unfortunately this thread is looking like it will be in danger of being hijacked by seabreezes cereal whinger's, with more "guess what I saw", and "Guess what someone told me happened" stories, as these are the very comments you are trying to warn us about.
Whinging on seabreeze, are only preaching to the converted, and the anti kitesurfing groups.
I believe the best thing we can do as a group to fight bans, is to stand up and do something at the time when we see someone acting stupid. Point out to them there mistakes, and even if they take no notice at the time, if we all do it, eventually the msg will get through. Hopefully then the standard behaviour of a few rouges will improve and enhance our overall image.

Interesting.

bans are due to rudeness (of those who kite like tools around other water users)

And this thread just went down the rudeness path as do many on this forum.

Must be so hard to see where the answer lies.

Shayne86, I am not sure what your point is. What happens is this:

1. A kiter does something irresponsible - like going over 5 knots within 50m of swimmer, or worse still colliding with a swimmer ("I didn't see them your honour . . .")

2. A member of the public (could be someone on the beach or the swimmer) complains to the Water Police and/or the local council

3. Water Police and/or local council assess the situation, including all available evidence.

4. Someone posts about issue on Seabreeze. Maybe they say "stupid swimmers should keep out of my way, how dare they swim at my kiting location".

5. The post is recorded from SB by people hostile to kitesurfing and becomes part of the evidence considered by the Water Police and/or local government - and does not reflect at all well on the entire kitesurfing community. This would be considered relevant evidence.

6. Worst case scenario, kitesurfing is then banned at the location in question.

So, if in doubt, STFU.
