When I was in Hawaii I brought back some SPF 50. I have a friend who just came back from Hawaii with SPF 80, and she said she saw people using SPF 100 over there!!!
Austrralia has the highest incidence of skin cancer, yet we can only buy SPF 30...
WTF?
I did a quick investigation (google) to find out why this is the case. The only explination was that "Australians would only be lured into a false sense of security by higher SPF", and education programs like "slip-slop-slap" are the better option.
The good news is that apparently, we may be allowed to import SPF 50 in 2010.
Until then - Banana Boat gets my vote.
We can buy SPF 30+ which can be higher than 30, but apparently past SPF 30 there is very ittle difference in the uv rays that are blocked and so it is misleading... Yes i read the paper this morning![]()
Here is a bit of advice from the web:
Buy a recommended sunscreen that is economically priced so that you do not skimp on its use.
You can minimise the impact of sunburn by holding the kite up at 11/12 and kiting in the shade underneath.
Then as it gets later in the afternoon, lower the kite to about 10, and later still, to about 9... by the time sunset is coming, your kite should be hovering just above the water.
Sure, it's hard also given you can only ride in one direction each session, and it's a little darker than kiting is usually, but for the sake of the future of your skin, I mean, who wouldn't..?
echoing one of the other members responses, I think the go-er is to cover up as much as u can n then use sunscreen on the face neck n legs... im off to buy a long sleeve rashie this wk as my wettie top is now a little too warm for summer...
I see melanoma cases alot of the time at work and I see the extent in which is spreads all over the body... end stage secondary cancers from primary melanomas sit under the skin and in the fat and theyr just everywhere... its horrible
Its so easy to get so excited to go out when the conditions r on and u forget or dont take the time to use sunscreen and Ive been guilty of that but now I put it on before I leave the house.
Anyway, slip slop slap, thats my two cents :-)
1. Faulding white zinc
2. Banana Boat SPORT sunscreen (best BB for water)
3. Clear zinc (not bad for non-staining but doesn't do the job like ol' whitey).
