I remember a story of a couple who went to Europe and brought a boat to do a circumnavigation and then resell the boat when they got back to Europe. When they got to Australia (they were Australian) they weren't only allowed to clear customs unless they paid the import duty on the boat (non refundable when they left Australia again). In the end, they had to skip stopping off at Australia on their circumnavigation as they couldn't justify the cost.
Toph. I just can't see airfare to the BVI's where she is plus some accommodation and food totalling anywhere near $80k. On the upside, it's the perfect place to start seeing as I want to head north and hit the Nth West passage at the start of summer. Just an option and only thinking out loud. Other option is to buy here, head to Europe, Greenland then onto the Nth West passage. All comes down to the f#$/ing tax man.
I got quoted between 25 and 30k to have a boat delivered from BVI to Tahiti were I was hoping to bring her the rest of the way home myself. You still seem to be ignoring the delivery costs in your estimate. Even of you bring the yacht back yourself, you will be charged taxes on what it cost YOU to bring it back.
But in any case, good luck with your adventure. It certainly sounds like it is gonna be a ripper..

Oh now I see. Regardless of whether it's me sailing back on the smell of an oily rag, they will STILL charge me commercial shipping fees ie what it would cost if I were to have it wrapped and put on a ship. With you now. Thanks mate. Understood. Personally, I think there should be exemptions to the rules and charges because we don't have a yacht manufacturing industry like the rest of the world. Oh well, the search for my yacht will continue.
It all makes an Australian bought boat less unattractive.

For what it's worth, those prices I was quoted was for a delivery skipper and One crew member. It included visas, food and airfares back to the States.
