My plan for when I put down tools is to move to Tassie, I think it is beautiful :).
Its a beautiful Island Meg ![]()
Donks commission cheque from Tourism Tasmania must of come through again!, truly awesome pictures.
Happy Birthday Cisco, you don't look a day over 50 in your avatar, so going great.
I travelled Tassie far and wide in summer, that's why l know what it is like. Not in winter, though.
The humidity kills not the heat. I loved Bourke in summer. 45c on the river, 53c up on the bank inland. Beautiful dry heat. No humidity.
The humidity makes the tropics unbearable.
Many happy returns Cisco! ![]()

(Apologies to those who aren't interested in Tassie. )
I love tassie alot too. Weathers perfect. Summer sees some hot days. Abalone, massive oysters, mussels. Great place to forage.
I should have started a thread on tasmania!

Maybe Dover by the water or St Mary's, nowhere too touristy, I like the idea of a bit of remoteness but still with access to all the beautiful places. I always thought I would live in the tropics but after spending many years in the heat; North Oz, West Oz, SE Asia, where by 11am all people can do is retreat indoors to the air conditioning I have developed a new appreciation for the small things like being able to run at midday, being able to walk my dogs before 8PM without having to worry they're burning their feet on the bitumen, windsurfing a deserted beach in Winter and not having to fight for a parking space.
I agree with those who say it's easy to keep warm by just adding layers and you can still get out and about and function but much harder to cope and stay cool in the heat. I like not having to worry so much about sunburn and always being coated in sunscreen. There's something about getting out and about in the cool that makes you feel alive, then you have a hot coffee and a warm home and appreciate it all the more, sometimes the heat is just draining. IMHO![]()

Hi Meg
Even the touristy places in Tassie are fairly casual compared to mainland coastal tourist towns like Pt Douglas, Noosa, etc
Hobart is like a big country town as well and is nothing like mainland capital cities
Dover which is about 20 mins drive south of us is nice but the road from Port Huon to Dover is a bit up and down and winding and can be a bit of a bugger in winter with ice
We drove through St Mary's a few days ago and it is not a bad place but given the choice I would pick St Helens which is around 20 mins drive away and is on the coast with nice beaches nearby and a bigger town area
The good thing about Tassie is it is so small that anywhere you want to go on the island is only about 4 to 5 hours drive away
Regards Don
Have you ever walked up the top of drys bluff don?
Hi Steve
No I have not
We have been in Tassie for around 4 years but live south of Hobart so we haven't spent much time up north apart from a few weeks looking around the normal tourist spots
Regards Don
One other thing about Tassy - Hobart seems to have THE best racing scene of anywhere I can find in the world, on a per-capita basis. The number of boats is colossal considering the population. It knocks the sox of cities in NZ and everywhere else I can find in the world - only Newcastle/Lake Mac seems to come anywhere close in the English-speaking countries, and I don't think there's anywhere comparable in Europe.
More Tassy love from today.......

I've visited Tassie twice, next time I'd like to go around on my touring bicycle, I was told logging trucks can be a danger in some parts.....Donk??
Hi Meg
I am not sure about other parts of Tassie but in the Huon Valley where we live timber used to be one of the major industries but now it has wound back a fair bit
We live on th Huon Highway and locals say years ago logging trucks would be going past all day but now you might see four or five a hour
Aquaculture (salmon farming) is now a major industry in the Huon Valley and there a quite a few trucks transporting stuff for them but not any more than anywhere else I have lived but as you know a lot of the roads down here are up and down and winding so that might make it a bit more of a issue
Regards Don

Back in the early 70's I bought a honda XL250 made a back pack for it including hanging pots and pans
and spent two years exploring Tassy . use to ride down bulldozers track in far away corners . Some nights the leeches crawling all over the outside of the tent.Used to cost me $25 a week for food and fuel. Loved it.
The logging trucks made a few large potholes in the roads back then and you would get the occasional truck broken down in some nasty places without any danger triangles to warn you at night.
I picked blackberries near sand fly and can remember a good picker could make $32 a week the dole then was $35
made a absolute fortune ha ha
Guess alot of us would love tassie cause we love sailing and maybe solitude/peace and quiet. Tassie has that in abundance. I used to work in the huon every apple season but the money was very good with free accom thrown in. I could make enough to get me back to the other side the world and resume traveling
1 amazing thing i did down there was a overnight walk from waterfall bay to fortescue bay tasman peninsula. Walking high on ridge ocean next to you and great views.
