... or forget steps 1 to 4.... find a big 3-4 ft ramp, initiate the loop 15ft in the air, total wig out when you see the water, then proceed to eat s#!t!
ok not the best way to learn but good for spectators.
This looks like the best technique I have seen for learning to do a forward, will definitely be trying this method. Thankyou
looks like a good way to get the controlled catapult feeling down. Just need to grow a pair, then ill b sweet
looks good, much better then the jump and sheet in method which has been pretty hit and miss for me, emphasis on the miss. did get some funny bailouts thou.
anyway had a go at step 1 today, wind was a bit light thou so didn't get too far, will give step 2-3 a go next time it gets windy.
gopro camera should be on its way soon, so i'll take some vids so that you can laugh at my attempts.
had a go at steps 1-2 at Kurnell on Sunday avo. i'm sure i provided some amusement for the locals.
didn't get the board very far round so definitely got some work to do on Steps 1-3 then hopefully i can "man up" and have a lash at step 4. I can always go back to the tried and tested the conditions weren't quite right today excuse.
The thing that really clicked with me about this video was that you bring the rig a long way to windward. Previously in my mind it was kind flat.
Is anyone else going to learn to loop soon? I kinda had a goal where I'd at least start by this Christmas. Unemployment begins next week so the timing couldn't be better (you won't see me on the interwebs as much/too much, haha).
Anybody else want to throw down the gauntlet and get to step 4 step 2-3 by the end of this year?
Over the last few sessions I've done the "Go flat out at the highest ramp you can find, sheet in hard, then get scared and bail" method.
This one seems much safer...
Count me in too.
I think that by posting to this thread, you give permission for other sailors to call you a wimp if you don't have a go.
count me in too.
I tried a couple at sandy on Monday night. Struggled to hold on to the boom when pulling the rig fully to windward.
It'd help to have some other guys going for them as well - you feel a bit of a chump doing on your own and there's only so much motivation you can generate on your own for something that hurts and looks stupid!
Anyone up for this
I'm onboard! Next time I see you windaddict I will try your approach as the go for it approach I have been trying hasn't resulted in much joy. (other than for shop owners)
Maybe all the Vic sailors that are trying should all sail at the same beach. This way we would all look stupid together.
Us Vics should meet up on the next good weekend somewhere for a looping sesh, preferably somewhere thats not too onshore-ish.
Windaddict I think you beat me to it! I am up for that (subject to my day release pass still being valid once my wife has given birth, due any day)
Anyone up for a 'looping group' for perth? I reckon duchies would be a good place to do it - not as gusty as scabs and less likely to get washed in and trash stuff when things go wrong
the vid is the same as the 7 sons of freestyle loop tutorial. i've been watching it for a few months now dreamng.
the other method which i've done is to loop in the back yard with the rig. it works! at first it's off putting to throw yourself forward towards the ground as you swivel around the mast. the thing is you don't drop like a stone and end up on your back spinning like a rap dancer. ![]()
well worth a go!
sure beats the other method i tried which was jump, tuck feet, sheet in and look back.
only tried that method twice and nearly died. have been so scared since it's been a problem to pull the trigger.
I'm in. Again. For about the fourth year in a row.
I can do the rotation, just without the board though. It's pretty easy and fun when out of the footstraps.
Something about past orthodontic treatment is holding me back. At least with this method, the feeling of rotating with the board can be developed progressively.
yes!!! go guys - cant wait to see the results and welcome you all to the loop club..
one thing - beware - once you get that first one - you end up going for them ALL THE TIME!!! Its addictive!
You got to gain confidence
Get a couple of sessions under your belt powered up.... you should be able to extend your floater jumps and stall jumps landing tail first by really controling the landing by floating down with power in the sail.
HOWS YOUR STALLED NOISE FIRST LANDING JUMPS.
These are the best jump to feel out tilting THE NOSE down wind and contolling your board in the air. and learning to feel whats it like to be looking forward.
and are also great for feeling out a back loop landings.(Pressures on your body straps board and rig)as you drop and spear it in.
Dont attempt to do forwards if its out of control windy ..........powered and a tad over and a little bit cross on is the go.
You dont have to OR want to pick the biggest ramp (ie vertical ramp) As demonstrated above flat water ones are very easy once you commit
ITS A CONBINATION OF BEING CATUPALTED AND using your legs to bring the board under and around with you.
The flatter ones you do them the more of your legs / feet have to locked into the straps .........but they will just follow you round ....got really lockem in.
aiming to go around side ways ........gotta hang on fken tight.
But hey you can pitch and go end over end ask waveslayer
More commitment = less damage you can not feel this move out.
Take on the power once you felt it once and gorn around once .......no turning back.
I'm in for sure. want to try at least a couple of Step 4 spin loop attempts by the end of summer. off to merimbula in December for 10 days with the mrs so that might be a good spot to have a go ![]()
Had a go at step 1 recently, its not actually as easy as it looks on the vid!!!
I was in the straps semi-planing, bearing away and sheeting in and just fell over!![]()
After a few tries I went a bit faster and popped off a wavelet and got quite a long way round but landed a bit hard ![]()
Having looked at the vid a second time i can see where I was going wrong.....I needed to stand on the tail and get that nose clear of the water.
Also tried some heli-tacks and sconned my shin on the fin (not sure how...
)
what size board is going to be best for this given that you're supposed to be in the straps but not planing??
can i suggest also the new Jem hall DVD- wavesailor to winner... has two awesome sections on fwd loops and also backloops. Breaks it down and makes it easier. Ginger Pom i will loan it too you
