Just curious...
Has anyone ever gone windsurfing in a decent blow, under the influence of anything stronger than coffee or gatorade? Even a few too many beers?
I wonder because, on the one hand, it could be pretty damn awesome, and on the other hand, the potential for serious wipeouts and injury must be quite high...
I remember reading a story in book of old surf writing, about a guy who went surfing at night on LSD and had the most perfect ride of his life...but windsurfing is kind of a more complex activity than surfing and I seriously doubt my own ability to keep it together under the influence of a couple of beers, let alone a good dose of lysergic acid (which I never touch anyway, just to clarify)...
Like, whatever, man...
There's no help for you. Or, maybe you could wean yourself off by going kiting from time to time, and gradually work your way down to boogie-boarding...
Bit dodgy man!!!
I dont mix drinking and water, ie windsurfing, diving etc! Perfect ingredients for death!
Makes me wonder tho, because certain drugs give you a massive boost in confidence making you think you can pull anything off !!! (apparently!)![]()
I might finally be able to crack that forward ![]()

The guy was probably so high he just thought he sailed well
, I don't need drugs to act like an idiot!![]()

note tried sailing on anything stronger than booze yet... hm... interesting thought.
But did go for a sail after a six pack of Coopers sparkling @ Hang Over Bay. Was on my way from Perth to Gero with a mate. We didn't plan on a sail but when we realized it was windy around Cervantes we pulled in to have a look. Head high surf and 30 knts only three guys out on the water... dang. It was all good until I launched for forward over the first wave. Couldn't hold the sail on impact... I guess it had to do with the delayed reaction time...
anyway, the cold water and excersice seemed to speed up my metabolizm as I ended up sobering up after about 30 minutes... still pissed ended up having one of the best sails in a while!
On a different trip another mate (who's name was Luke Skywalker Johnson but shall not be mentioned here) had 8 homebrew Coopers on the way to Gero. When he arrived it was blowing about 25 knts... to give you an idea of his condition: he didn't bother getting out of his jeans, staggered towards the water and stacked it couple of times and when finally on the water took about 10 minutes to make it out to the break. Of course he still ripped it up once he got out on the water.
FYI, in both cases neither of us had to do any driving after the sail so no real harm done...
ahh da vecta, you remember i had wavefoils and multifinsystems
think you did too! ![]()
didn't everyone, they were like hot tuna boardies, what happened to them?
What??? Hot Tuna's still cool isn't it?
Funny you should mention HT as only YESTERDAY I ran into the guy that ran HT Qld for 15 years.
Nice guy, had a story to tell. Label was sold to the owner of Mushroom records at one time!
thats fitting that mushrooms appear in this thread.....spooky........
the walls are moving...........aaaargh ![]()
I sailed around to a friends house along the lake recently. Had a few Gin and Tonics in the pool before setting of back home. Was rather nice sailing into the sunset but the coordination required for gybing was non existant. I reckon I would have been well under 0.05.
If you don't get a big enough natural high from windsurfing I dare say you probably have got some serious problems. Drugs alter brain chemistry and neural pathways, start messin with that, and you'll slowly diminish your ability to have natural high's and you begin to create a physical addiction and a psychological dependency on drugs. In my line of work, one ofthe biggest causes of ruined lives is drug taking................ I see people in their teens, 20's, 30's 40's, 50's and even 60's who's lives are ruined from alcohol and drugs........ That we have developed a culture where drugs are embedded in our social fabric is extremely sad![]()
Now for the record....... of all the clients I see, and is also what the scientific literature finds, is that psychological therapy is least effective for the alcohol and drug addicted, and the alcohol drug addicted have the poorest future prognosis for ever getting well again. The brain changes with drugs, in some ways never to return to normal. The short term benefits of drug taking which there are some, are far outweighed by the long term damage they do!!
The brain becomes so altered, that even if you come off the drugs and alcohol, you probably have to take precription drugs for the rest of your life to restore the appropriate brain chemistry you need, and to feed the hungry little neurotransmitter receptors that you have inadvertantly created!!
Lecture over.......
And for those of you that pooh pooh my words of wisdom........... See you at my clinic when your brain burns out!!!!!!!! And join the queue, coz I have a waiting list!!!!!!! More windsurfing toys yippee!!!!!!!
Thanks dad!
FYI, I am originally from Bavaria in Germany. By law, we consider beer as part of the basic foods (read it's taxed at the same rate... yay!).
Legally you are allowed to buy low percentage alcohol once you turn 16 but most people are allowed to have a bit of beer here and there at a younger age. Irresponsible? Well, when you compare the average Friday night in Munich with the average Friday night in Sydney I must say I have never seen that many people in one place completely off their face until I came to this beautiful country.
I think it's because here people drink to get drunk vs. places like Germany and France most people have a drink or two in a social setting because they enjoy it.
Go to the Octoberfest for example. The majority of people getting completely plastered beyond believe are in no particular order: Australians, Kiwis, Yanks... then followed by the Italians.
I know I know, there are many different types of alcoholism but the bottom line seems to be that people here never learn how to drink responsibly because of the way and social setting in which alcohol is generally consumed.
But again, thanks for the lecture Dad.
PS: I always thought Gambling was the biggest problem for destroying peoples lives in this country.
Think i've done everything under the influence of one thing or another at some stage in my life, but i was a art student so what could you expect... surfing after some green is a joke, you almost have a heart attack before you reach the line up. sailing after a beer or 2 is fun, but i had some drinks not expecting the wind to pick up oops.. same situation but after sharing a joint with some mates at a BBQ, went sailing in the surf, dropped my gear on the inside, lets just say i straightened up real fast.. not recommended, all yous kids out there..
Also been out on the town enjoying a disco cookie, got home as the sun was rising, went for a bmx down the local skate park, lets just say it doesn't really help when your bike feels as bent as you do.. my mate came home blood pissing out him everywhere, so also not recomended.
used to smoke green and go surfing all the time, gave up 4 mths ago after 12 yrs of smoking everyday. i thought i never would stop but i grew out of it. by the way when you stop pot its not uncommon to suffer anxiety for a few days(not a nice feeling)
Chris,
Are you sure this applies to even small amounts of alcohol? If so, you probably should give anyone under 18-21 most medication in liquid form.
While we are on the subject given how harmful smoking is in this context maybe we should ban cigaretts in the process, then get rid of liquore licenses and we would all live happily ever after...
... of course then the question is how will the government keep the masses mediacted so they don't realize how useless our politicans really are.
as I said... people in some countries never seem to get the proper education on how to consume drugs (more so alcohol than others) responsibly.
The again, in some countries they don't seem to get any education to begin with. Just look at the current US president: ex coke-head, alcoholic and all round moron.
hey thought this topic was about doing drugs then going sailing, seams to be transformed into a drug and alcohol lecture.
Think we all know the effects on your body and brain, but not the efffects on your sailing, josh angulo is a fine example of the effects and how it didn't help his sailing ability.. now he's clean and freakin rips.. there is a long list of pro sailors from australia and the rest of the world who have in the past and some still into drugs even heavy drugs, that still perform at a high level, but the question is still on the table " does it help them sailing in this condition?"
example "the windsurf movie" josh section, him trying to sail off his guts, he looked like a kook and we all know he can sail better than any of us, so the basic answer would be "no it makes you sail worse"
Didn't he say "God gave it all back to him"...
As they say: "Jesus loves you and everyone else things you are a c***."
Of course if anyone argues that any form of mind altering substance makes them a better sailor you'd have to wonder. Most people that are performing well in any discipline while under the influence are generally pretty good at what they to begin with.
