I don't usually on normal sailing and gibes, perhaps once a year.

In this case and other occurrences, it happens whilst trying stuff (in this one, aggressive board 360 through a gibe) and I seem to concentrate on other matters such as foot placement. Happens also on some flakas.

Still, it happens. The scar is HUGE and colourful - and well deserved.
Hence my time to write in this forum

hooking up in the air overpowered on a race sail with seat harness is no fun when the board is starting the nose first descent and your back foot comes out of the strap. Every now and then... ribs twice, several broken battens, broken board, bruises from collecting the board...

Easy fix, learn to sail with the hook up, no more accidental hook ups during a gybe. Also very useful while wave sailing, bottom turns are a real bitch when your hook grabs a line half way through.

I think I started sailing with the hook up ( 80's) then fashion swung to hook down.. Is that because the lines drop out easier/ accidentally hook up..?

I saw some pics of me in the 80's & I think the hook up was due to using a chest harness..

Come to think of it I did accidentally hook up more with a chest harness.

Very rarely, but mid-vulcan is a bad place to end the run of luck. Ouch.

could it be that those getting hooked in are not leaning forward enough, extending the front arm and driving therail through the gybe?

i'm certainly no expert technician but i've never gotten hooked in by accident. to be honest i just can't see how it's possible unless your wave sailing.

Biggest culprit is a fresh set of stiff harnes lines that aren't secured tightly to the boom. They end up pointing towards you on a 45 angle, even when un hooked.

Saturday - set of the day (well probably not but thats what I'll call it) 25-30 knt gust - stand a bit upright as I flick the sail and bingo hooked in splattered , missed the wave but had a good laugh cause I was reading this post on Friday and reflecting on the fact that I never seem to do it anymore

Never say never
