I've just moved to Newcastle and am looking for some location advice. Is Nobby's the best place to windsurf and what conditions suit it best? I still haven't had a chance to see anyone out there so where are the best spots to sail from on the beach? Any other tips would be appreciated.
Thanks, Alan
Nobbys is the go in a nor easter
You need to be a little careful on mid to low tide though.
There is a bit of a keyhole and channel through the reef to get out the back... on a lowish tide you will see a rock sticking up out of the water fairly close to the beach (about halfway along the beach), the channel is just near the rock.
Once your out the back and heading back in towards the beach and getting into the wave zones... be careful not to track too far upwind when you are on the wave as it will see you ending up on shallow reef ledge.
Best bet is to watch where the local crew go out... you'll also see how far you can bear off the wind and score some great wave rides by watching the regulars tear it up.
All up it's a good bunch of guys who sail at Nobbys so simply walk up and have a chat.. they'll sort you out

Yeah take that you Nobby's sailors. Until you can high-five each other on the beach after each session, and train your brain to think that waist high is 3/4 mast, don't try to match it with the Wanda crew you try-hards! ![]()
Yer those wanda metro sexuals are real hardcore.
Nobby's ain't to bad, best in a southerly swell, can hold big surf if its from the right direction, you should try to get on the water early, the wind tends to die around 5 when i finsh work
the reef can get real shallow and smash you if you don't pay attention.
We have a secret spot, cross shore, beach break, but it gets a nice wave, we'll let you in on it once we are convinced your not a wanda sailor pretending to be a real man..
bummer bout the wind dying around five, at wanda we can sail all day.
do you guys tie your mullets back while you're sailing at nobbys?
nah, that'd be metrosexual
Back to the original question...
Alan, Nobbys is and has been a regular spot to sail in a Nor East. Like anywhere on the NSW coastline it has its good days and its average days. Even on the average days you will still find blokes bogging out and catching a few waves. These days will have a fair few kites out, however as mentioned before when the wind is on the kites thin out. If there is a southerly swell running it will be more side shore and better down the line. The reef has been talked up as if it is a gnarly reef. Nobbys reef is easy to sail. Like anywhere it gets shallow on low tide.
Come and say gday to any of the sailors on the beach. If you like lake sailing you will find Lake Macquarie the best flat water bump and jump location in NSW and many sailors sailing there. As for the secret spot. Its not a secret, its Birdie Beach in the Frazer National Park at Lake Munmorah. This place is a beach break and can go off when the conditions are on. Here and Nobbys are the two most frequented beaches for Nor East sailing.
Regards Peto.
Hey stickman and gutboy, how did the Gerroa comp go. Who won the Season!
Wazza the hypocrit. Yeah Krust ive heard. He forgets one time when he voiced his opinion at Juretic at an AGM a few years back in the Gerroa carpark. Juretic was finishing up his stint of President and Wazza blew up at him for the way he ran the comps. Mind you, Wazza did this at Gerroa in front of families and everyone. It didnt look great. I think Wazza suffers from memory loss occassionaly.
hey baconboy, good to hear yous still around.
I think the skeleton won the opens , Apparently just made it out of the anorexia ward in time which was a close shave. Didnt do me any favours in tassie though. I think Waz got the masters, open ams is still up in the air, and I think Melanie took out the womens. Dont quote me on any of that though.![]()
any of you shemales coming down to the teams event? Its a real good fun format, similar to the format in surfing. Only downside is you may have to lay it down on the water, as opposed totalking it up on a forum.[}:)]
