I Have A Dream...
That one day we will windsurf without masts or booms; we will have a fully inflatable rig with struts similar to a kite, but positioned vertically like a sail. At the bottom end, it will be attached to the board, and there will be lines running from all corners to the centre, where there will be harness lines to hook into - but no boom! For balance, fine tuning, etc, instead of a boom, we will simply hold onto rubber tubing placed on the lines, or manipulate the sail itself...this will revolutonize windsurfing.

yep the gear has become an issue for me, surfing wins hands down, simplicity, I love my windsurfing, but I hate lugging a car load of kit around with me, last year I dragged my board, 3 sails, boom, mast, fins, etc etc 3000km and never used it once, but I had my surfboard and surfed heaps of times, so next road trip, the windsurfing kit stays at home. This is my opinion, for me right now surfing wins, even when the southerlies blow on the goldy, I seriously almost rather head to snapper or greenmount and catch some waves.
A buddy of mine who only surfs looks at all my windsurfing kit and says " the hassle v's fun factor just doesnt seem to add up".
So the answer for me now is quite simple, I dont even bother about windsurfing unless the wind is up above 20 knots, thats the reason Im not seen as often around the local windsurfing spots.
However, if on the goldy we got higher wind levels on a more consistant basis windsurfing would rule, but Im soooo over standing around waiting! ![]()
nude bushwalking is a good sport for lack of gear, just a simple pair of shoes, nice, interested anyone?
I enjoy bodysurfing, all I need is my swimming trunks, a bit of blue tack for my bung ear and a will to have a good time in dumping surf. Great fun and feel good afterwoods.
I was at Pittwater today with my wife as she is learning to windsurf. People were rigging and going out with dingies and cats. These vessels need at least two people to rig them and one or two crew. So many lines, tackle and blocks. Let alone the numerous yachts and big cats moored there. I don't really get it. Why spend a few tens of thousands on a nice boat and then don't use the bastard on a beautiful day with a breeze and sunshine?
You may think windsurfing is complex. However when you compare it to other forms of sailing, its very simple. To say kite sailing is simpler is foolish. Its more complex as there are numerous lines and hooks and stuff from my cursory view. Plus the fact the amount of lift involved with kiting makes it dangerous.
Yep. This thread throws me back to when I first stated windsurfing back in 85. Pretty much everyone I knew who windsurfed came into it through either surfing or dinghy saling. The surfers would say "windsurfing is great but theres all this stuff". The dinghy sailors on the other hand would say "windsurfings' great theres hardly any stuff. . . . .". Eveythings relative . . . .
As far as flexible gear to take on trips away, I think the longboard/sup board has to be the go (presuming you're travelling with a car) ! Took my Exocet Kona away on a family summer trip. Two sails, mast, booms and a paddle. Had a day fully powered on a 5.3. A day shlogging but catching waves with the 5.3. A day crusing with and 8m and a couple of morning paddle surfing. Whole kit board, two sails, mast, paddle, etc all go on the racks of the falcon wagon.
surfing, windsurfing, skiing, diving, rock climbing
versus
bodyboarding, kiteboarding, snowboarding, snorkling, bush walking
One of the threads above will tend to take up a lot more gear space than the other, however i know which sports i prefer![]()
