.......Apparently there's a safety issue here ??
Obviously poleys have zero manoeuvrability when sailing with a fat-arse rig at breakneck speed.
Stupid kiters, don't they know.....
GPS-MEN CAN'T TURN.
"With teeth fully clenched tight, and with beads of perspiration dribbling down from the brim of his gath-hat.....
the GPS-man noticed the meter strapped to his bicep was red-lining."
"Suddenly, thru the mist of sweat, he noticed a lone kiter directly in his sights, straight on course."
There's only one thing to do in this situation. ^^^
lol.
First, adopt the poo-stance (if you aren't already in it).
Then, gently squeeze out the slippery hard line from the clutches of the hook....
and with the full force of your bum-muscles, dump the load.
Throw your feet to the sun, legs wide apart,
arch your helmetted-head back towards the water......
and butt-check to safety.
lol.
Just like that US pilot when he ditched his arse into the Hudson River and skidded to a halt.
No one died.
That was beautiful.
NO they shouldn't be banned!
They should be smart enough to realise that they are risking lives.
The other night at Melville one lone Kiter ventured up into the Poley area right where everyone was starting thier downwind run, why?
If you want really flat water you could go way upwind in the shallows where the windsurfers don't go, but stay far enough upwind not to cause problems.
I came very close to colliding with a kiter at Woodies on Wednesday doing close to 35K. He unfortunately chose to boost into my path without looking...as kiters are wont to do. ![]()
I literally stepped off my board and the board and rig came to rest no more than 2 metres from where he crashed into the water, after spotting me when he was airborne and pretty much out of options.
Prior to this incident I had been happily sharing the strip with two other kiters, who displayed some respect and awareness of what I was doing, as I did to them. They even did a few downwind runs of their own.
It was hell windy (28-33K) and I think windsurfers are entitled to sail the north side of Woodies in prime speedsailing weather (I won't bother sailing there unless it's honking...it ain't worth the risk).
Kiters need to look before they boost!!! It's only common sense. I would never gybe without looking behind me to see if there is anyone aft or downwind of me, yet I constantly see kiters at Woodies boosting without checking if there is anyone in their path. WTF is that about??
It would be a sad day when a group of people are banned from an area.
How about putting signs up warning both sail and kiters of the dangers of sharing an area.
The only problem then would be funding and approvals from local councils.
I've had Windsurfers, kiters, boats, and swimmers doing silly things and getting in my way during a speed run. We need to ban the lot of them!
Or maybe just a bit of education and courtesy would be a better option. ![]()
I had a big-ass turtle (?tortoise?) not giving way at Dutchies on Thursday when hanging on and only just in control --- but then again he probably had right of way.
At about 1m or more across he was a hazard that just wouldn't see sense and move on. In the rough conditions he was quite hard to see and he was loitering just out from the reef.
Could have been messy ![]()

Turtle nets. Turtle nets with poles that stick up with crime scene tape between them, and thugs on jet skis committing the crimes vis: bashing errant kiters and freestylers who dare to intrude.
I don't think there's a need to ban kites. However, if someone were to run High Voltage power lines at about 6.5m along the length of the speed strips, this may solve some problems :P
