Wouldn't it be nice? ![]()
In a strong SE it is arguably as good (if not better) a location as Lancelin.
Starting at say Kirra and finishing north of the Sand Pumping jetty.
With 5 or 7 markers (boats) in between.
Kiters too could start 30 mins after (or before).
Has to be a safer location and what about the viewing from all the high rises.
Wouldn't run out of accomadation!!
All we need to do is find a pub!
Makes your mouth water doesn't it?![]()
How hard could it be?!!
it actually ran for a few years in the early eighties, it was called the "oscars to oscars ocean marathon"
it ran from oscars seafood restaurant at kirra to the sister restaurant at surfers.
and you got a certificate at the end!!!!! the winner got a glass mug.
where was all the bluddy seafood? not even a plate of prawn cutlets. ![]()
e&j sailboards ran the "e&j one way" for a few years from currumbin to main beach and that was more successful as the wind shadow at kirra meant you needed a 200 litreish board for the first 1k.
biggest problem was half the fleet always got clobbered in the goldy shorey
great vision da vecta
This was done from Currumbin to Narrowneck back in either '90 or '91.
I can only remember it running once, and was held in a NE wind.
I think Lance (can't remember his surname) who used to race on JV sails won. But I could be wrong on that one.
if it was done with tide and wind same way the water would be very flat.
i looked on google earth and it is a 10km run from the swimming area south of the train to ephraim island.
anyways i like your idea of getting something going. would be good.... ![]()
What does "worthwhile" mean, big prize, big entry fee?
Should it be a casual deal point to point, no markers, entry fee just to cover insurance or should it be a proper sanctioned race with marks and starting rules, support boat etc etc?
I kind of like the idea of a low key thingo, the less fuss the better.
What is the minimum requirement for an event like this?
are you saying local personell are incompetent aus1111.
we were in baghdad before you were in dads bag!!!!! ![]()
No offence intended! I just meant if it looked like there would be a big party afterwards!
Really I just meant it would be worthwhile coming over if it looked like there would be a big competitive fleet and a well organised event, much like we have in Lancelin. I'm guessing a few of you Queenslanders must be considering a trip west next January?
what about interchangable start and finish lines ? ie if its a north easter , start at shearwater, if its south easter, start at train. If its easterly it would be optional thus having an exciting mid race collision avoidance exercise.(one shouts "starboard!", the shout back,"F2 !")
i think the person was just joking about the train to shearwater race
we'd run out of wind near wavebreak island or it'd be gusty as buggery
what about snapper to the spit? clean wind at start and finish?
I say we inaugurate the event with the "Train to Shearwater - Dash for Trash". Lets keep it as informal as possible with no restrictions to entry.
The Grand Prize (mens) - A Six Pack of Powers (Cans!)
The Grand Prize (ladies) - A Hot Lap in Haircut's Holden!
Yes, there will be windshadows and sand banks and stuff but that will help make it entertaining (and give other types of boards a chance).
The race will be called next time there looks like strong wind (and i say low tide).
Could end up a pub near somewhere too.
Oh yer, can anyone "borrow me" a Slalom Board?
sounds good,
i can make a trophy if you like, i got a really old wave slot fin i can mount. i can mount on a helmet and the winner from year to year must wear the helmet and be called sharkboy or girl!. ![]()
why not take the freestyle wave mate. if you get bored you can do your spinny things.
yeah we're just mucking about. ![]()
i am pretty sure something will be organised.
it's a great idea da vecta has suggested.
What about the Smith Street to Sandbank Sprint ???
Just do it 50 times like i do then its a marathon ???
What ever happened to the Caloundra ocean marathon???
