Cleaning out the garage this arvo and came across some old photos. Taken in 1989 and shows my pride and joy - a custom Strapper/Bombora proto (astro toy) with my only sail a 6.1 wild winds slalom. Also my trusty Z boom (which I recently bought another one to use wave sailing!). The photo's are in black and white thank God - the fluro pink zinc cream on my nose is a lot more bearable.. Ah the 80's...

Point Henry in the middle of a hail storm!

The stepped Vee - not the quickest planning board but was great in the rough stuff

I look twenty years younger and 20 kilos lighter - wait a second .... I was...

Anyone else willing to show the old stuff??

I have posted these before - oldies but goodies.
The first is in Dunedin harbour January 1980 - real old school gear. Made by Tony Limburg who still runs the windsurf shop in Dunedin - Watercooled sports. It was before we had seen or heard of harnesses so when the arms got tired we would get inside the boom and lean back on it. Wooden boom!

The second photo is an old Superstar class on Christchurch estuary in about 1982 just after the last race in the inaugural Canterbury windsurf champs.

Pedro what is the line coming from the sail of the superstar about half way along the boom?

Greenroom windsurfing misses colours like that... fashion dosen't miss those shorts or sunnies though

Here's one from 1989 in the Columbia Gorge. Z-booms were quite the thing back then weren't they, and check out the claw-grip where it attaches to the mast.

That would be an adjustable outhaul. I had a Dufour Wing in 1987 that was the same.

PS - I am loving the old photos. Keep em coming.

A 3.3sq.m sail to boot as well - must have been pretty windy although I suppose those sails were a lot more powerful than today's for their relative size.

I don't think so - you can see the outhaul line hanging freely at the back end of the boom! It's probably the inhaul line. You know, the one that ties the boom to the mast!

JayBee is right. My original Windsurfer One Design had its outhaul like that.
Rope used to go through a grooved part of the boom clew and up each side of the boom.

BTW, what were the pros and cons of Z-booms? Why aren't they made anymore?

Z booms gave a very natural grip for your forward hand. It stops you having to twist your wrist to grasp the boom.

I think Hyrodynamix made them up to very recently, they were an excellent product, but never really "accepted". The guy who runs Hydrodynamix lurks on this forum - I am sure he will have plenty to say.

All the existing customers are too old to windsurf any more

We stopped manufacturing this summer as the market was so small it was hard to justify carrying the stock (we manufacture large batches for efficiency).

The people that used them loved them & everyone else hated them although they had never tried one.
Personally I found that they were extremely comfy for the front hand but I struggled with gybing & tacking with one.
Another problem is the way sails are cut these days, the boom cutout is too low for a Z-Boom if you are taller than 5 foot
Because of the height issue I couldn't use one effectively so never spent enough time with one to practice gybing etc.
Freight was another problem as they don,t pack well & most customers are interstate or overseas so the freight costs would outway the boom cost.

The Z-boom was invented by a local guy in Fremantle & manufactured here for more than 25 years.
We had a brand new Lime Green Lock Jaw Z-boom which we offered to the Maritime Museum in Freo, they weren't interested
They could have put together a good display covering the 25 years of the Z-boom & 25 years of the Ledge to Lano, would have been colourful

Hey Willy, I still use one. Have used them since 1987. I bought the last "long one" from Paul Kelf at hydro and it's way better than the many earlier one's I had. (better shape, stiffness, front end and tailpiece)

I find jibing is easier as the hand reaching for the new boom passes well below the forearm hanging on to the old boom, and the z part of the new boom slaps straight into your palm after rotating. I've got 2 mates who use them also. (Some of the younger generation windsurfers have have seen us and thought they were looking at a brand new revolution that had somehow escaped their attention)

I believe Neil Pryde tried to buy the patent from hydrodynamix in the early '90's, but they wouldn't sell it!!! Hmmmmm..... what do they say about hind sight??

As for the cut out.. I have it at the top of the cut out. I'm 6ft tall, no problems. I could put it a bit higher if I needed to.

(I've also heard a whisper that Pryde are going to be putting out a new shaped boom. Not as radical as the z but along similar ergonomic lines)
