To reduce you chances of being eaten by a shark by as much as 50% find a windsurfer who cant gybe.
Follow him everywhere and turn when he turns.
I've done this for years and NEVER been attacked by a shark. Enough proof I think!
I really really like sharks. I don't think there is a better adapted, more perfect hunter out there. To be honest, I think it would be a great experience to see a white pointer out whilst kiting ahh performing water activities. I might not seem like it at the time, but afterwards it would be.
I really don't think there is much to worry about with them. If they really wanted to eat people, there would be A LOT more fatalities.
Every time I see on a news website "Massive Killer Shark Horrifies Poor Little Kid" i feel sad towards them. The media constantly drills into peoples heads that sharks are out to get us. And most people tend to have a hate towards them.
An example, the Japs killing a few whales every year, massive public problems. Illegal fisherman killing 100,000,000 (a hundred million)+ sharks a year, and it seems few people give a dam.
When i went to check out the dead whale that washed up at Hillaries, i really went to see the shark bites. They were really quite amazing. I imagined the bites would be messy and chewed up. In fact, the cuts were soooooooo smooth and clean, it could have been a doctor with a scalpel.
If i were you guys, I'd feel really privileged (and really scarred) to have seen a white pointer. Possibly the coolest animal out there.
A 5 hour swim back with a bloody nose would increase your chances of bein chomped on, like driving at night with the lights off
Statistically your more likely to die being hit by a car crossing the road or an allergic bee sting, this is based on number of people killed every year V number killed by shark attack.
But the odds change for the worse as soon as you enter the sharks habitat, the statistics stay the same and apply just as much to the person watching you on the beach who has got no chance of being eaten.
The biggest fear about a shark attack is that we THINK we are at the top of the food chain.
No-one likes to hve to realise that there are plenty of animals out there that can knock off a human as quick as..... I also remember hearing somewhere that more humans killed by falling coconuts. Its a wonder we havent burnt even coconut palm to the ground as well.
I think a healthy respect and knowledge that we play in their domain is the answer. Plus it also can up the adrenaline levels a fair bit which is pretty good.
This is a guy from down my way about 2 years ago. real nice guy and sooo lucky. Where they dive, no way would I sail. Best time of year for GWS down here. Couple in the bay every year. Reports of one hitting a seal only a couple of weeks ago in front of some tourists - though not confirmed.
Gotta improve waterstarts before I just stay bobbing around in the bay like a injured seal.
Have a look at this - the Dave Letterman show interview was better, no b.s. graphics and wrong names for locals.http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=2503081n
Well the spot out near Hillarys used to be packed on a good summers day (30 sailors out) but since that guy got munched a few years ago at Cott you're lucky if you get 10 out! So I'd be getting concerned if the biteys buggered off! Almost a symbiotic relationship if you like, they need us for food and we need them to keep the crowds away :)
Its a really different place at the Cape. I killed myself laughing at the map and they got all the peoples names wrong as well. The Dave Letterman show was much better as it was a lot more of Eric explaining what happened.
Dunno about the coconuts
But i've heard that statistically the most dangerous animal is the horse, but on one thinks twice about man-killing horses do they?
And hippos kill way more people then sharks
And bees
Scared of those?
I think we gotta respect the sharks
But not let fear drive us to crazyness, otherwise i'll be handing out bubblewrap and we can all live in a no-threatening environment
