Quietone - people like you who think it is a bogan town. We do not want people like you. You either love rockingham or hate it.

It only looks like a bogan town when you have young kids hanging around outside the shopping centers on their bikes.

P*ss off - your not wanted.

And by the way , it is possible to raise good kids here. You just have to know how to raise them.

I'm in my 20's & have been raised great , no drugs , stealing etc.

It just depends on the up bringing of your child and who they hang around.

Spoken Like a true Rocko trooper!!

In all fairness though, I spent some time living in the area a few years back, and found if you didn't have hobbies that involved the beaches, ie surfing, windsurfing, fishing etc, people (especially kids) didn't really have a great deal to do there. You would like to think this has changed in recent years with massive influx of people there.

Nice spot but

So Doggie...... if, we were to ask all Rockingham residents to supply

a personal swab of DNA into this forum, there would be none of your

jeans traceable to said area. Man has to be careful when he says that

he has never had visiting rights [ in public ]

Na, well na no way, hang on let me think........................NO [}:)]

I travelled there a few times in 2008. Not a bad area and I have the following observations:

Plenty of industry around there so there should be plenty of well paid jobs

Drinking a carton of beer with a few mates on the front lawn next to your VC Commodore is the go.

The shopping strip is pretty seedy with lots of sex shops and a few pubs that are a bit down market.

The coastline is spectacular.

We were thinking of moving to WA and I spent a bit of time at a school close to Rockingham, but a bit inland in a suburban sprawl. There was a teaching job going there and the principal invited me down to have a look. The kids seemed okay, similar to kids in NSW. The teachers did not seem to be too stressed out.

G'day Quietone,

First post here, kinda spurred into it in defence of poor old Rockingham....

Ignore the stupidity of those who type insults from afar.....and near!!!

My two kids are now at the upper teen level, having been raised in Rocky with NO probs, in fact the older they get, the more fun they are to have around.

There most definately is an element of society down here which will be a blot on the rest of the community....the type of poeple that will tell you to "p!55 off" and "We don't want you".

You sound like an intelligent and well mannered person to me, and as such you wouldn't fit into the gutter alongside such people.

I hope you stay here and increase the standard of the place with your family.

Cheers,

Joe

Bruce65-there must be somewhere worse if your too embarrassed to put where you live on your profile-some people less forgiving than myself would likely view that as as somewhat hypocritical-or worse...

before we judge bogansville lets have a look at it and its origin.

garden island is a major port for refueling naval boats with a powerstation and a refinery close buy.
now in not sure on the dates but the was built a a strategic point of intrest for the forces. The bogans who have represented rockingham used to be everyday tradies who enjoyed a beer after work they built this area. like the 419ers.
the coastal stretch from Rockingham is an aquatic playground ajacent (protected by the cocburn sound is a major shipping terminals) for heavy industry and exports even manufacturing now which includes australs.
I wouldnt knock the spot (like today tonight branding it pretty much a dump)
Rockingham is a lovely spot and like all areas there is a minority which is bad yet a majority which is good.
It aint no redfern.
Plenty of successful people have came out of rockingham
Its better than living on the swan river in a polluted dumhole and its cheaper possiably a good investment for the future.
Its the type of spot where you would see naval jets flyn overhead and choppers about. , I wish i grew up in Rockingham close to the beech insted of inland!!!

lots of sex shops? there is one strip club and a couple of commercial shops (ie adultshop) scattered over town not different to anywhere else.

I dare say since then your last visit the town might look a bit different...there is a new a shopping centre in the centre of town that would almost rival some of the bigger gallerias and the like, there are a whole lot new ammenities along the foreshore with its latest revamps with more to come.

Rockingham is not a bad place at all, and I dont live any where near there but know a few people there.
People who criticize Rockingham but wont give their area-even worse their state....

Im guessing NSW (bankrupt) or Vic (kitecentral), now thats probably something some are ashamed or embarrassed about?

Rockingham isnt that bad , theres sh!t just about in every suburb except where they can't afford the rent. My kids are great ,well mannered and no trace of Bogan in their bloodline, But we do live south of Pomgolia (Secret Harbour ) and theres less deroes down this way . Too far from Centrelink . Your kids will be fine if you're not a bog lapping, mullet wearing a-hole.

Firstly I don't have kids, however, I DO live in Port Kennedy, I have found this to be a good area (depending on the part in which you live). However, my ex gf was born and raised in Rockingham (Coolongup to be precise) and she is an assistant principal and only in her early 30s. It is definitely possible to raise good, responsible members of society in Rockingham, her parents did this through instilling a good sense of self worth through participation in sports etc. I think it's the parenting that makes the biggest difference rather than where you live and what you're surrounded by. You get ungrateful, trouble making ingrates at the most upmarket schools anywhere.

Just my 2c

Bogan if I've ever seen one...and prob proud of it! Seen a few of his interviews, as (now) an international movie star in the elite list, his fav pastime is still hanging out in pubs with mates playing pool & going to the TAB for a mystery bet! What's wrong with that???

Quietone, wear your town's title with pride...a bogan's not such a bad thing...plenty around here.

Btw, I thought all Wa'ers were bogans!

Lucky I bought the new triple insulated flamesuit to put on before I posted! haha

Parts of Rockingham are good and other parts are pretty ordinary stick close to the coast away from Hillman, Coolongup areas and you should be fine.

so is rockingham park on the good list again.
seeing the aerials makes me realize how much the bushthere has been filled in.
when I was younger we would ride our bikes from through the bush from rocky park ( stage 1) all the way to point peron with no houses at all

as kfc has said there are many suburbs in rockingham, there are some to avoid and some that are very family frendly and a decent. This is the whole reason i bought a place in the nice part of port kennedy (rockingham). I think it all comes down to the parents, i grew up in kwinana but i have a steady job thats pays well above the average for wa, i own my own home and i dont have a criminal record and i came from a single mother so if your child grows up in a way you are not happy with i think the majority of the blame is with you.

I am bringing up 2 well adjusted and in my humble opinion absolutely delightful children in Rockingham and would like to concur with Landyachts last post.
It generally has nothing to do with the area that you live but the time spent with your children, doing what you expect every other parent to do with their children;...know where they are and spend as much time with them as a positive role model as you can. Just disregard the pratts that live outside the area as they are metaphorically speaking out of there hindquarters. As with any suburb North or South of the river, there are certain areas within each suburb that should be avoided and any real estate agent worth their salt will know these areas. If you have bought in a less desirable area of Rockingham then I can only suggest that you sell up and move to a more desirable area..even a street away, as you could have the same sort of neighbours as you have irrespective of where you live. Having said that, my first home in Rockingham was in a less desirable suburb, at the time and I'd have to say it was the nicest in all aspects from layout to neighbours that I have ever been fortunate enough to live. I left and have returned to bring up my children

Yep, bringing them up and loving it. They are to. Disregard the responses from those not from Rockingham and if the neighbours you have give you grief, i give my sincere condolences but where ever you move to you may similar neighbours. Landyacht had the right response... be prepared to spend as much time as possible with your children and worry less about possessions...which is'nt to say you already do. If that is a tall order don't bother having children and enjoy your life doing what you want...you will have to sacrifice something, but the rewards of bringing up children in Rockingham are well worth it

Enjoy where you live, if not then look for somewhere else. I suppose it comes down to how a place is portrayed.

Never lived there, but there would be stacks to like about Rockingham. Close to the water, great fishing, sailing, (currently) plenty of work nearby... how could / would you not like living there and bring up your kids.

If Today Tonight is looking for a story, they will find what they are looking for and match it to the article, look for one "bogan" then suddenly that is what the whole place is like.

As an aside...
Someone I know did alot of presentations to schools about road safety and how serious injuries from drink driving change people's lives...

Nearly always her comments are that the kids from so called "bogan" areas are ready to listen, ask intelligent questions, offer assistance and take the message in. Kids from the other areas are usually the opposite and very hard work...
