Anyway back on topic. Due to family commitments its unlikely I can fast this Saturday. I am going to try to fast tomorrow. Though its a work day there is not much work on at the moment. However due to a regular engagement on Friday nights that usually mean getting home around 11pm it will be a challenge.

This was a really good thread until the crap got slung around.

Is there a possibility of further discussion on the topic "Fasting"??

I listened to Michael Mosley on a pod cast from A.B.C. in which he put forward the concept of the 5:2 diet as well as the idea that 3 minutes exercise per week is enough to maintain good health!!!

Both concepts got my attention. Going hungry on Mondays and Thursdays is fairly easy to do. So what about this 3 minutes exercise per week????

He says what he does is go on the exercise bike and go flat out for 20 seconds and then warm down to recovery mode and then repeat this twice more.

That is on one day of the week and then again on two other days of the week.

If one is following the Monday/Thursday fasting day regime, I would suggest the best days for the exercise regime would be Wednesday evening, Saturday morning and Sunday evening.

Any thoughts on that??

^^^ sounds like if you think 5:2 is correct, and thus based on our prehistoric need for a fast now and then..... that the 3mins excercise
is bullsh!tfarken.
Using the the same logic you would need 3hrs exercise to CATCH the food or find it and pick it etc etc cos that is what we did back then.

IMHO you can't have both.

I've gotta eat - i need energy.
Every day i either run cycle or swim and if i don't eat i don't perform its as simple as that.
Try cycling a hilly 120km without eating.

I wouldn't mind one right now. I'm fasting today. So have missed breakfast and lunch so far. Feeling a bit hungry however overall feeling fine. Perhaps my head feels a bit different and in a way my thoughts are clearer though this may be an illusion. Last meal was at around 7.30pm last night and I had a beer with dinner and one afterwards. So perhaps the last intake of calories was about 8.30pm.

I don't think I'll have much trouble keeping my fast till tonight. However having a 24 hour fast, should I have something to eat tonight or should I break my fast at breakfast tomorrow?

I am a Moseley fan - watched the original show - read the book - (on kindle for $5.00) have had to cut back to 1 or 1.5 days a week - as going under 70 Kg - and not doing the diet for weight - for the health and for regenerative benefits - read the book enough science in it to be valid. It is no hardship to limit eating on 2 days a week to 600 Calories - you can choose the days and eat/drink what I like rest of the time.

for me a no brainer...
I eat 3 snacks on fast day -e.g. porridge (basic mode) vegies4lunch bit fish or fruit for Diner - this allows me to indulge my coffee habit too (just less than normal)
Cheers

In modern society, with good nutrition, and good health care, sure, but I don't think its been that long that this has been more common than not. The genetics haven't changed, but the environment we live in has and enables us to live longer.

I would argue that after reproduction takes place, evolution doesn't care what happens with us. If you have children between 16 and 24 for example, if you live to 30 or 80 makes no evolutionary impact. As you have already reproduced, if you have genes that mean you die at 30, they are just as valid as genes that have you die at 90.

Of course, there is suggestion that grandparents (35 year olds?) would have been a benefit in some societies by freeing up the parents to hunt and therefore support more children.

I wouldn't say we have good nutrition in modern society. A lot of foods are contaminated in various ways, refined, and stripped of most of their nutritional value. Maybe life expectancy is longer now because in western countries we have pretty much got rid of diseases that killed a lot of people in the past, such as TB.

More people are living longer now. But that doesn't necessarily mean people are healthier. I think everyone knows older people with diabetes, heart problems, dementia.. ect..
