It comes from an old custom from the early days rellie.
You had to talk with your teeth closed together otherwise you got a gobfull of flies. No such thing as no fly zones back then. They are a modern inovation.

Not sure where the raping of vowels came from. I guess if there's nothing else around then vowels will have to do.

But,,,why have some of them been in there for over 5 years?
How come it can take that long to do some paper work??

5 years is a long time to be behind a barb wire fence,,,,sounds like a jail????

Coz they destroy all their paperwork before coming here. Most of the long term detainees have been refused entry, but no country will take them off our hands coz it can't be proven where they came from, and they're not telling.

"Destroy" is kind of an emotive choice of words. Do you have proof they actively destroyed their papers or do you just assume this because they don't have any? My friend Li doesn't have any paperwork from before arriving here. She escaped South Vietnam by boat and, as she says, they were too busy running to worry about paperwork. At the time of their arrival there was a big hew and cry about the south vietnamese "boat people" much like there is today. But nevertheless, she's become a good mother and wife here, a hard worker and a damn fine aussie.

And why do we have to imprison them? We're about the only country in the world stoopid enough to do that. Any country with half a brain would give them a temporary visa while their case is being sorted out and then send them out to work where they have to support themselves and pay taxes like everyone else. Unlike the current situation where they sit in limbo forever at horrendous cost. The end result would be the same - they get accepted or they get shipped out. The big difference would be the cost to everyone else.

Your friend Li, "Refugee" (and I know a lot just like Li)
This lot are nothing but, scum bag queue jumpers, using the system to promote their individual cause. sadly they create huge pain and suffering for those like Li stuck in actual "refugee camps" thought the world, waiting for the real chance to be taken in.

Many other countries just send them back or shoot them..... aren't we nice to give them a bed with lots of extras.
Let them into the work force? LOL...yep they work in the "cash" system pay little or no taxes, have no work cover, undercut basic wages and take work from people with Australian tax file numbers. [I see it every day]

Well for what I know they must have stoped over somewhere before reaching our shores, mostly boarding a plane and then landing in Thailand or Indonesia so it is fair comment to assume that they had travel document or they would not have been let out of the airport! Unlike the mass of real refugees waiting in camps and stuck because of those queue jumpers, should we call them economic refugees?
Also the convention for refugee's states that you must lodge your refugee status in the first country you reach after you left the country where you were persecuted witch is Australia in the case of the South Vietnamese as they were boarding the boats in Vietnam.
Last year I went to Switzerland and was surprise to find that the Federal police was checking everyone passport as they were coming out of the aircraft. I asked why and the reply was that a lot of people were destroying their documents in the plane and claimed refugee status at immigration, what they do now is: no passport, you do not come out of the terminal and are sent back in the next plane going to your provenance. We should do that to all the people arriving by boat refusing to tell where they are coming from.

Why should I ask poms? It may have escaped your notice but we've got lots of Pakistanis here in Australia. One lives next door to me. I work with quite a few of them as well. They're fine - it's the French are the ones I'd worry about.

Felixdcat is absolutely right about one thing - that's the British system and the end result is that they disappear off the radar and make a living from crime / black market / pay no tax / before they do disappear the tax payer pays for their upkeep in hostel anyway.

It's rubbish and broken and easily circumvented. The Aussie method is much better.

The one thing I would disagree with is that it's Pakistanis that are the issue. They generally turn up and work themselves silly. Most Brits have time for the Indians and Pakistanis because they do all kinds of anti-social jobs and don't cause grief. Obviously that's a pretty big statement, as there are some pretty bad apples that come in as well, but in general the guys from the subcontinent want to get ahead and they do that by working hard, which is fine by me.

For the record, I'm a Pom with a boat load of skills and education, I've been here on and off for four years and in the process of applying for Permanent Residency, which is a total nightmare. I only just qualify, and the paperwork involved is incredible. I think this is a good thing... as long as people aren't allowed to jump the queue.

Are you worried about the French in England? Well as England and France are part of Europe they have the right to be there!
Are you worried about the French in Australia? I know a couple here and they are as fine as your Pakistani friend! And I am not aware of a plague of illegal French rioting and burning government property but maybe we know better and could enlighten us with your knowledge!

If they're in another country in a camp then presumably they are safe from their persecutors and they should be looked after by that country. If they lob up on our door then they become our refugees. Why should some other country have to take them first? If I was in that country I'd be thinking what bunch of arseholes Australians are.

Or are you saying that Australia should only accept people who have first managed to arrive at some other country and been accepted by them? Why?

Actually, no. Again, that's an assumption on your part. Many of them actually arrived in other countries first where it was clear they were in just as much deep poo as when they'd started. My other mate Vinh told me about how they arrived in Malaysia after days at sea only to be turned away at gunpoint. Too bad that their boat was leaking. They ran their boat aground that night at risk of their lives.

Oh.. and before the wheelnut pipes in - yes, we could act the same as the Malaysians were but then if I wanted to live in a country that shoots people who come asking me for help, I'd just go live in some sh!thole instead of Australia.

Totally agree with you as I was once in the same "boat" I did all the right things and I was rewarded with an OZ citizenship. And when I mentionned the Pakistanis I should have said the illegal migrants, my use of the word Poms was not intended to be an insult, I have been called Wog and never got offended by it!

The 2008 number was approx 4600 people arriving by plane who then claimed asylum in Australia. That's a shedload less than the UK.

Personally, I think they should be detained as well - not for the purpose of punishing them, but just to make sure that they don't go vanishing into society.

So that makes it right? We should detain them as well or better send them back via the next flight.
We are spending millions to help foreign countries as well as "economic refugees" and we can barely support our old people giving them a pittance called old age pension, I bet a lot of them would be better living in illegal migrants camps, they could enjoy heating and hot showers, air con in summer, 3 square meals a day (catered to your needs) free medical and dentist, free phone and on top of that safety.
Yes you are dead right I say if you jump the queue go back to case 1!

Good stuff spinny. You've come to a viewpoint based on reason, unlike a lot of people who debate this stuff from an emotive viewpoint. Can't agree with you though - detaining them for any length of time costs you and me a bucketload. I'd rather we go back to the system in place before Pauline Hanson appeared on the scene.

And the ones arriving by plane and claiming asylum were not the ones I had in mind when I mentioned the plane arrivals. There are a much larger number who arrive by plane with a visa and then just refuse to go when the time is up. Those people are genuinely illegal, unlike the majority of the refugees arriving by boat (who are a much smaller number anyway). They also participate in the cash economy and generally bludge on the rest of us. Nobody seems to worry about them!

The ones arriving with visas are easy to deal with as they can be sent back the day they are caught and I agree with you the over stayers are bad for us as they work for less than you and me would so they are stealing a job from some poor bastard on the dole, they should not be detained but sent back ASAP, employers taking advantage of the situation should be punished as well.

I was taken by taxi from home to the airport recently the driver openly admitted he was in Australia on a tourist visa and working driving taxi's, he was very pleasant, knew his way around the city and happy to talk about his life in India and his travels.
Is this legal and if not should the taxi company be held accountable?

If he was here on a tourist visa no way would get a taxi license. Probably driving on a rellies license.

Definitely his photo on a legitimate taxi license on the dashboard. The company I do some work for use a courier company that uses overseas tourists as drivers... and pays cash to the drivers, that's how the courier company is able to undercut the competition.

The cash economy out there is H-U-G-E
