I'll give a free green thumb to anybody that can explain to me how the Libs woul have handled the situation or the future in a better way.

You might find it hard, I struggle to remember any alternative policy from them. Do they even have any????

The Stimulus money come in handy. I bought a new Board.
I actually need to be stimulated again as i creased that board last Weekend.

tony's been too busy ripping (or trying) strips of julia to be bothered with that kind of stuff

julia is also busy patching up policy stuff ups and making sure bob feels good about himself

Insulation scheme wasn't allowed to succeed due to a few oportunistic dodgy business peeps doing shonky work.. and the witch hunt media circus that followed.

As others have said, most insulation jobs and schools etc were good jobs..but good stories don't rate in the news (or push biased barrows up a slanted hills ey bjw).

Glass is more than half full buddy.

On the one hand some people say there is too much government involvement and that things are over-regulated in a nanny-state.

On the other hand sometimes the same people say that the government should have been there.

I guess you just can't win.

this is the problem- yes. i'll talk with my builders hat on here.

there was a stage when every you beaut investor, got some money and want to make some more money were getting builders licences when they knew jack about building.
quite often they were the sort that went bust. sad part was these dudes would kick off again in three months time usually using some poor saps rego.

so everybody suffered when the powers that be decided to clamp down on the industry. now there is not a month that goes by without the bsa waving the big stick threatening everyone. interestingly the bsa is a labor goverment idea going back to the goss era.

now if the powers to be(liberal/labor) controled building registrations properly back in the early eighties and used some foresight there wouldn't be a need for excessive red tape and control we see today.

i bet its pretty tough to get a insulation installers ticket now, be it all to late---- again

Working on cars is easy, if you can't surf everyday, you can maybe fix it.

i've been building all my working life, thats what i know. go where? retrain at my age, is it possible.

there are a heck of a lot of people in the same boat in my neck of the woods.

there has been a bit of spark of late, crossing my fingers it keeps building up.

most of these down turns have never lasted this long in my time. i suppose we've expected things to turn sooner.

i might add historically when the liberals are in the building game fairs better. thats regardless of what side of the fence one politically sits

Yeah my dad was a builder too. Its a tough industry to make a decent dollar.

I think the the home insulation scheme plus the solar power schemes shows how government intervention distorts markets and leads to boom and bust.

The government gives. The government takes away.


Yes its great schools have new buildings however at what cost? Plus who benefits? Do educational outcomes improve because of new buildings? Time will tell. The one thing we can be sure of is the big project management company Bovis Lend Lease did very well out of the BER. The average builder and subbie got SFA from it. Basically it was an exercise of transfer wealth from the commonwealth to big business.

So, are you guys saying that tradies and builders got NO work from the schools program?

So where did the Lend Leases of the world get their workers from to build the school halls? Do they just have armies of brickies and sparkies sitting on their arses doing nothing waiting for some government to announce a new building program? Have you applied for a job with them? Or did you lot just fail to go where the work was when it was there and so missed out?

there's almost different worlds we are talking about here- commercial and domestic.
the schemes only really looked after that 'market' mostly ie kept that existing labor force going. as far as i know, nobody was screaming for workers

my current work position has taken on a more commercial slant.

seems to me the domestic bulding industry hardly rate a mention in the scheme of things even in this forum.

there is a flow in effect when building is down- well in my area anyway.

the local corner shop is down because they don't have utes lined up in the morning with blokes getting coffees, papers drinks etc. the mechanics are slow because cars are only being repaired when something actually stops working.

the surf shop retaill/manufacturers are down because a fair percentage of their boards sales are to tradies.

and so on

None of those thing automatically follow, actually.

Most are amendments to keep existing law current & working.
Some repeal old laws (ie less law)
Most new ones are to deal with new problems - ie
horse disease response = hendra virus.
