The news and the like, using the phrase "all but over" or "all but finished" etc in the wrong context.

eg, they say the house was all but washed away. but they mean that the house was washed away.

if its all BUT washed away, then how can it BE washed away??

GRR!

I'll side with your parents, term of phrase is correct imo. The term 'all but over' for example could be used near the end of a footy match, say 2 min to to go; "this game is all but over"

In the case of the house: "the house is all but washed away" IE the house is still there but it's basically f*@#d, the only thing worse that could happen to it would for it to be washed away; context 100% correct.

People that sit in the right lane beside another car well under the speed limit.
People that sit in the right lane for no reason.
People that crawl when approaching a red light.
Scooters that do 60 in a 90 zone, you finally get past them then they go past at the lights again.
Volvo drivers.
Reporters that say " Plane crashes, at least 50 people were killed". Not a nice thing to say. Reminds me of a news paper headline that read, Police help dog attack victim.

But the biggy is that chick that sang, Your so vain. One of the lines says "you probably think this song is about you" THE BL**DY SONG IS ABOUT HIM! Who else would it be about, she refers to him over 60 damn times (I counted 67), is she really that stupid or was it meant to be funny like" If you leave me, can I come too".
That'll do for now

I have a few to add here. (i) scooter riders who ride down the middle of the traffic to the front and then can't do 60kph (if your machine is not powerful enough, wait at the back of the line) (ii) drivers who slow down to under 80kph going into the tunnel when there's no physical hold up (are they claustrophobic?)(ii) drivers who pull out in front of you and fail to reach the speed limit.(iii) On the open road .... drivers who drive under the speed limit until they reach an overtaking lane then speed up making a simple overtaking manoeuvre dangerous.

I think if most people heard a song on the radio they would assume it wasn't about them... even if it was written about them. Vain-man would assume it actually was all about him.

I met someone like that once

i also hate the massive over use of the word "space" when ur watching renovation shows/interior shows/"the block" etc.
ie. "this is such a great use of space, this space is really inviting, i love this space they've created"

FFS, get a new word already

What would you like them to call it? Area?? "Wow look at this great area!"

As oposed to "Look at this great space"

Reality shows are the pits imo

I hate it when there is no wind and people say comments like, "The weather is great, it's so CALM"

Some people are just outright insensitive!

Dickheads that drive aggressively from side streets as if to say "If people think Im gonna barge right into the traffic they might back off and let me in"
Guess what peanut, try it!! Seems to be a new thing??

The nob today who had 50 car spaces to choose from who proceeded to park 3 inches from my back tailgate. Worst part was he was a local (I think) and a windsurfer and saw me giving him the stink eye.
So how am I supposed to get mast, boom and board into wagon with that much space??
As usual these days, NFI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Will it buff out???

I'd write a nice polite note asking for a little consideration on a big ass sticker, the kind that you need solvent to get off and stick it on the drivers side windscreen. I used to do this to the BMWs and Mercs that would often park in the loading zones when I done some delivery driving, almost made it worth the inconvenience .
