Something that I directly experience in the IT industry is a f*cked up culture that women do not want to be a part of.
It is sad and frustrating to watch the existing (men) people in a group change their behaviours, sometimes quite radically when women are working either nearby, or in the group.
It is no wonder that women do not want to be a part of this culture. The sad thing is, is that most of the incumbents do not want to change, because it suits them.
For examples of genuine ****ed up behaviours, we need to look no further than the regular assaults that happen at Linux Conferences - lwn.net/Articles/417952/
Back to the OP, if you want a mardi gras for straight people, organise it. Most of what I experience in today's AU culture, is that if you want something, then unless you run afoul of some law, it will be accepted.
"Well, we have to end apartheid for one. And slow down the nuclear arms race, stop terrorism and world hunger. We have to provide food and shelter for the homeless, and oppose racial discrimination and promote civil rights, while also promoting equal rights for women. We have to encourage a return to traditional moral values. Most importantly, we have to promote general social concern and less materialism in young people." - Bret
Women are not equal to men.
Most people notice the fundemental differences, Doggie in particular.
Neither are men equal to women.
It is a funny old thing but nature has provided us with a system of reproduction which affects us to the degree that we have entirely different bodies. The notion of virgin birth is one thing but I cannot see males giving birth for a long time, nor even wanting to.
The actual design of women also, funnily, seems to lean toward their being instinctively more likely to nurture. Now I do not know that many CEO's but the ones that I did know could hardly be described as nurturers. Ghengis Khan's would be more accurate.
Developing quotas is a nonsense.
For those who think it is not have a look at the likes of the women who have suceeded in politics and ask yourelf if this is a good thing, Julia Gillard, Hillary Clinton, Margeret Thatcher ..........................
The reason it gets forced on people is because government is a nonsense.
Japie, your basis for approving or disapproving of Quotas is based on a woman you used to work with and she was Gengis Khan, so therefore Quotas are "a nonsense"............oaky doaky then. And the argument is not about the biology of the sexes it is about giving all people the opportunity to fulfill their abilities. At the moment we are saying to our children, no, your wasting your time trying to become a CEO ......because your female. Here's a stat for you: out of the top 200 companies in Australia only 6 of them have women as their CEO. That's not right, agreed?
Hey log man - so your argument is that a person should be a CEO (or anything else) just because they are a woman ?
Back to the topic at hand, i really think those participating in the Mardi Gras don't do themselves or their cause any favours. Flaunting the extremes of their lifestyle would not help us "outsiders" to accept them any easier. Same goes really for anything extreme, except sports of course. I know that this will stir up the anything goes, fence sitters, who think anybody should be allowed to do anything, anytime, however there needs to be boundries, we all have them.
hey stupid people, its called and advertised as the GAY mardi gras...
yes mardi gras means carnival, traditionally held before lent as a last big festival before the fast
in bogan, sound bite, oi oi oi, culturally devoid australia, mardis gras might colloquially mean a bunch of fruits dancing down the street once a year
but
those of us can think and who are'nt jingoistic, chest beating, chinese made australian flag waving tools, with unit stickers on their cars understand this.
I have changed my opinion, logman et al have convinced me.
I look forward to 30% of women on company boards as proposed by the G-G and her mob
I also look forward to grano workers, shire hole diggers, lawn mowing contractors and roof tilers in the 40deg heat being 30% women ... as I imagine "equality" would mean the law applies to all occupations.
If I get passed over for a promotion because the boss has to fill a quota, can I sue for discrimination??
Equal opportunity means exactly that- equal.
The quota laws will not happen because of the risk of litigation.
