Smokers are a dying breed. If they wanna burn there hard earned money on getting cancer. Go for it. It'll only help clear the line up as they get older :-)

85K Non Smoker....

I agree with their freedom of choice... but I disagree that they then get tax payer funded medical assistance when they knowingly ingest these toxins. (I understand for people who have smoked for more than 10 years as it is an addiction)

If you have ever spent time with someone going through cancer (lung, bowel, prostate) then you would try to remove any chance that you would ever get this illness.....

I dont understand why kids still smoke today....

An interesting fact I heard... and Im not saying this in a judgemental way....

95% of people who have mental health issues... are smokers....

This is from a South Australian Health Professional who works in Communtiy Health....

Just an interesting statistic.... I didnt think it would be that high....

Non-smoker here and I thought that sounded a bit high

www.tobaccoinaustralia.org.au/chapter-1-prevalence/1-10-prevalence-of-smoking-in-other-high-risk-sub-
Among mentally ill in-patients with co-existing alcohol and other drug problems, smoking rates as high as 90% have been observed

So 90% of a small sub-sector of the mentally ill smoke.

I don't care if you smoke, but I thought it was healthy to take a 5 minute break every hour.
I know I do (and I don't smoke)

Me neither...I guess it's a peer/coolness issue with kids (still). Also, when you're a kid, coolness rates so much higher than mortality & health.

Maybe it's because they have a mental health issue that they either 'need' or 'choose' to smoke? Although I'm a NS, I think that may have bias written all over it?

Sorry, I got the figure wrong.

As I said, I had heard it second hand from someone else but as the bloke above mentioned, it is around 90% which I still find quite high.

I am not trying to make any points by it but simply found that it was a statistic that is staggering.

Generally, you would assume that this is due to the reason that people with mental health issues can be prone to addictive behaviours such as smoking and cannot excert the same level of self control as other people within the population.

This is the reason why government provides assistance to those people who wish to give up smoking because breaking the addiction is difficult for most people let alone putting mental health issues into the mix.

For the comment about breaks, you are far more productive when you do take regular breaks and allow your mind to relax and go again. Like any muscle, continuous use over long periods leads to fatigue and exhaustion. Doesnt really matter if you smoke on those breaks or post comments on seabreeze (...guilty...), taking a short break enables you to focus and produce better results while at work.

Personally I thought it was because of the "co-existing alcohol and other drug problems" rather than the mental illness. Shrug.

The same report shows:
"35% among patients suffering from common mental disorders"

Is that higher than the norm?

Wouldnt that be Quasi-Phallic? as in only a part time d!ck?

Or it could be Perma-Phallic... as in a full time d!ck!

Im not calling anyone a Phallic... just providing further ammo for the discussion....

We (I, really) let go of someone just last week - towards end of probation.

Smoking and all the time taken for it was a big factor, not that we told him.
He took between 10-15+ minutes per hour to go for a smoke. Plus could not sustain training and long meetings.

Otherwise an OK worker, my research says.

As to the argument that other workers do Twitter and surf on working hours or are lazy: true that, but it's an everything-else-being-equal argument.

If the Gov was serious about it they would ban them
Smokes are legal and until they are not there should be no discrimination toward people who choose to partake.
Complaints about smokers breath is a common complaint
I choose to complain about Garlic Breath and BO

And what is that going to change! Kids as young as 12 are smoking happily!
prohibition does not work! You will find plenty of black market ciggies, the price is going to be even higher and that will increase the crime rate 'cause peeps will be desperate to get money to feed the addiction.

Could help the pensioneers to have a bit extra at the end of the month by becoming ciggies dealers!

...that looks like some kinda prose. (And it looks like SeaBreeze could use a spell-check.)

Anyways, I have worked in a psycho-dementia NH and the mental health unit of a public hospital, as well as non-psych wards (just for comparison...). Those people who are smokers make a up a fair bit of psych patients. Perhaps 40%+
