I lend my pump out all the time, with one simple instruction " Don't shock load it !"

What's this and how do I avoid it?

I just put a no-brand Big W pump next to a branded kite pump then pulled them both apart.

They sell kite pumps at Big W?

Shock loading is pushing or pulling hard at the end of each stroke so you make a hard contact with the base or lid.

Kite pumps are just two way high volume pumps that can be bought in the inflatable pool toy section at Big W. Generally the kite pumps have a metal pump shaft instead of a plastic shaft and might be a bit tougher to deal with being on the beach all the time. But these extra features don't really justify the extra price.

I'll always lend my pump on the beach - I've had one for 5 years, still going strong with an occasional squirt of silicone lube in it. But I wouldn't lend one to an instructor - they have stacks of the things sitting around (remember every kite comes with one) and if they are wanting to borrow one it's simply because they can't be bothered to walk back to the trailer.

I'd be more than happy to lend my pump to someone who bothered to ask. But from now on I'll be stashing it back in the car after pumping up.
To the pr1ck who used my pump (beige liquid force with super shaft) yesterday at Sandgate: F**k you very much, next time bring your missus along so I can f**k her the way you f**ked my seals!
..I.

Calling a stranger a mate, perplexes me. 'Can i borrow your pump Mate' is also poor English and impolite. Firstly i may share a common sport but that does not mean i am your mate. Secondly, where are your manners. So unless you say 'May i borrow your pump please' I should be inclined to send your hide back to school and carry on with my day.

I just put a no-brand Big W pump next to a branded kite pump then pulled them both apart. They looked like they have come from the same mould bar a few small differences. Metal shaft v plastic, kite leash thingy and better valves internally. Probably cost an extra 20 cents to produce and doesn't equate to an extra $25 at the shop, but I can't see the cheapie lasting as long as a better one.

still blowing my 2013 ozones with a 2009 pump, with half a dozen new pumps lined up in the garage. seriously a pump should be used one way and one way only, flat out as it gets you on the water quicker

Thankyou and amen, arkgee.

The camaraderie is rare and special in this day and age and it WILL be gone all too soon. You will look back and marvel on the good ol' days

As a surfer who has moved over to kiting I still find it hard to ask advice or assistance for ANYTHING from other kiters as I am so used to 'attitude' from surfers. The kiting community is still young and friendly.

On the 'mate' question... Don't we ALL walk up to a total stranger (male), and say " 'Scuse me mate. Have you got the time? "

And no, we are not full.

^ this is funny.

I can't remember the last time I took my own pump to woodies because there's always some muppet down there I can harass for a pump.

Drew what's the go with the woodies crew stickers? do I have to send like an application to the local council or is there some rad club I have to join? Would be terrible if I wasn't welcome at my own spot and I get told to bugger off by a bunch of blow ins that are "locals" for a summer.

Maybe the answer is next time there is a big competition on here there could be 100s of pumps as prizes instead of flash overseas trips, new kites, new boards etc.
The more the merrier as sharing is caring
