TUFF

I just want to know is spot x a reform or an actual wave?
I think it's important to have a wave sailing nats and not a jumping nats
Dates I think should be when ever the gero crew think the best wind waves combo is.

Spot is a reef breaking wave. Breaks in the same place pretty much all the time, as it gets bigger it has a bombie out the back that then reforms into the bowl section and then it keeps going.

Wavesailing titles doesnt mean the jump titles, go to coro's for a jump sesh and the spot to smack some lips.

Its worthy.

unfortunately the margs comp (and the nationals) happened at the same time as the Starboard and Severne photo and video shoots were being held over here in epic conditions. A large core of the WA contingent is involved with these and this had a real impact on the ability for these crew to attend those events - bit of a bugger really.. but the boys would have been at these events if not for this scheduling clash.

So Starboard and Severne are sponsoring 'models' not competitive windsurfers? Surely the companies can work around competitions considering they reap the benefits of having competitions. Show a bit of support to the guys promoting the sport who do it in their own time without making a cent for their effort. Pretty poor I reckon!

there is actually a mandate that dictates all the rules and such for the nationals

Dan Berry said...
forgot to ask, is someone/ assoc actually organising this or is it a hyperthetical?

Who's mandate? The AWA's? It sounds like a group of sailors is organizing this, not the AWA. I think anyone should be able to enter the competition and have the different classes... pro-am, open, women, junior, etc. But, considering the AWA doesn't organize the Australian Titles each year and it's pretty well whoever puts their hand up to hold the event has got the job, then shouldn't it be up to the event organizers to decide?
In a perfect world, each state would apply to the AWA to hold the nationals and be selected on merit etc and then the AWA would dictate the rules and format etc to keep it consistent each year, but that's not the case... unfortunately!

The only other 'mandate' is the one that asdmuzak had at the local night-club!

the awa ( aust wavesailing Assoc ) used to run the event
in association with the host state. There has always been
a set of guidelines that dictated the format, man on man
double elimination ect. The guidelines could be changed thru
a vote at the agm ( held at the start of the event) this system has always
worked well in the past. However the aust wavesailing Assoc
is no more and the only official body that oversees the titles
is the aust windsurfing Assoc who take a more hands off aproach
leaving it up to the respective host state to run the event.

How many Australian Pro's are there? one that's working his way up the pwa rankings (and will probably be tied up with a Starboard/Severne photo shoot), another that apparently retired through injury but came out and sailed in Cabo Verde (and will also probably be tied up with a Starboard/Severne photo shoot) and another who spends less time in Australia than a lot of the euro's!
Invite all the international pros, the more the merrier. I don't think too many would make the trip but wouldn't it be awesome if a few of them did.
Have a Pro-am class so anyone can enter and have a crack at the best of the best. For the 'Australian Title' have an open class which is open to everyone except the pro's. It's done in other sports, why not wavesailing?

looks like this is going to be the biggest turnout of any nationals in history judging by the amount of interest in this thread, cant wait.

16TH TO THE 24TH OF JANUARY LOOKS LIKE (OK Dates )

^^ These dates would be great... as said, too many people are travelling just after xmas. By the 16th Jan everyone is settled and not too many on planes... thats when it would be easiest to cart over windsurfing gear on a plane i reckon.

Ok, now that the excitement seems to have reached it's peak I'll throw in a couple of buts:

1) Judging might be an issue at Spot x and Corros. In both cases the sailing happens a fair bit away from the beach and especially in the late afternoon is becomes difficult to spot who is doing what. Is there an elevated platform or something?

2) None of the Gerro spots make for good photos. All spots are difficult to shoot well from the beach, even with a long lens. Yes, you can shoot from the water but at both Corros and Spot X you ideally need a jetski plus driver... something rather difficult to bring along on a plane. At Point Moore it would be possible to shoot from a boat but again something which will cost money that's usually not available. Anyone prepared to donate a jetski plus driver?

just my 5 cents...

BTW, is that spot a "little" further north completely off limits for wave sailing comps???

I don't think it's too far out to hold a comp at SpotX. This photo is with a 250 mm lens. Nice elevated spot to judge from as well. Only issue would be getting everyone and their gear in there.

This is a reasonable photo of the wave on a small day. From memory nowhere else was breaking this day.

of course all that Spot X talk might be a waste of time as the Oakajee Port project construction could be well under way by that stage.

Whats the prefered judging format ? I know historically windsurfers like double elimination. But what about options

1) Fun format (aka. mambo). winner decided at the end
2) Slalom style. run as many heats and re-run start to end as many times as possible to keep sailors busy during the whole week and have a final result
3) ASP style. knock out from day 1 (virtually except round 2 second chance) and have longer heats
4) PWA style. shorter heats, double elmination ladder
5) All sailors on the water for an hour or two, and then the finalists picked and go into the finals.

Is this seriously a chance of preventing the comp being held there at that time?
Is anyone able to confirm yet (or anytime soon)?
Is there a back-up option nearby (with similar waves), or would it be held at the main spots in town?
Is this a post that contains too many questions starting with the word "is"?

the format for the nationals is man on man double elim. if you want to have some other format (mambo style ect) do so and call it something else, not the national titles.
