The problem is from the look of it many kite boarders come from a non sailing or surfing background. They have no concept of water rules or ettequette. The fact as Aldo writes, too many of them are not taught these rules when they learn.
Honestly it doesn't take Einstein to work out if you are going at 30 or 40 km/h being pulled along by a big kite attached with long strings, you should keep away from others.
Personally I will try and sail in areas where kite boarders are not around. If they turn up I will remain civil however if someone acts like an idiot and hits me I will get out my knife from my harness pouch and cut their strings so I don't get tangled up and drown.
I sail in Geraldton where there are loads of Kitesurfers and I've never had an issue with any of them, mainly because we tend to stay out of each others way, but there also seems to be a fair bit of common sense.
The idea of taking a knife out with me, or putting something sharp on my sail etc seems ludicrous to the extreme, or am I missing the joke, you blokes are taking the p155 aren't you??
I'm sure yachties, catarmaraners and surfers all went through this phase when windsurfing started. Why don't you just put your knives away and go and have a chat on the beach, maybe then a bit of respect will be earnt by you and the rules of right of way can be established.
adio (your right) BUT
Thats why it could become a real fked up sport ............Freedoms one thing rules are another.
Regulations everywhere.......................Luckly windsurfing escaped with at all that bull****.
I remember police trying to enforce LIFE JACKETS for all windsurfers ....luckly the pioneers RIP SPAGOLLI, SPINKSY ....told them where to jam it.......and just sailed off into the sunset, Then JUMPED IN THERE CARS smoked it up and gave them something to really to do.
PS I LIKE reading on this forum AND seeing kite meres unfold, watching there commrads, running to assist ......its .better than reality TV it guttsy and real and alive dood.
PS
ME mate had a hangglider made of old 2mm tude , put together with winged nuts and bolts...........and was very convinced it needed to be flowen.
VB SHOOTie aussie ......hv a go.
F^&k that - if I'm anywhere near kiters I carry a line knife. If I have right of way and a kiter causes a collision his lines are going - any damage to me or my kit and there will be hell for him in every possible way. Don't kite if you aren't prepared to learn the rules - same as you wouldn't drive a car on the roads if you don't know the rules.
Other windsurfers - well that's another story - if someones on a speed run I'll get out of their way irrespective, same if the WS is having control problems or heading for a gybe. WS I respect, and the same goes for surfers - they follow the ettiquette. Kiters I have NIL respect for - haven't seen one that has earned any yet, irrespective of how cool they think they are - sums up the reason they cause so many problems.
Better put on the flame suit now - I've done it again ![]()

I get the feeling I'm close to the line to being banished from this site for a while - so WTF one more:
I think I will start taking a dvd camera down to some spots (PP etc) and start filming all the kiting incidents. Put them together and diarise etc for the inevitable public summission time calling for Kiting bans.
Sorry to all those that make a living from venturing to the dark side selling that stuff.
~Banned yet?~ [}:)][}:)]
uh lets just skim together for now i love both and for the meantime it's what i call harmonic distortion till things get figured out![]()
I cant understand why everyone is so cranky with the other sport. Unfortunately ther are complete idiots in both sports. I think you should all just play nice and if thats not possible, go and play alone.
a kite is like a 4wd it thinks its king of the road (eg) get out of my way or youre gonna get hurt.
i ve been kiting for 3 weeks and thought id let yous know that i have huge respect for ws and that i dont kite near ws because i dont want to get in the way and i would spend at least 10min of an hour sesh floating around with the kite at 12 ocklokk
Pull your head in willy, i dont have enough time to waste on your dribble. I used to wind surf .... lots. i enjoy kiting more, but i also keep clear of windsurfers and surfers etc and i dont fel the need to attack the sport. If kites were not invented i would still be windsurfing.
it's just as well there's an internet forum for everyone to vent their frustrations at each other (formerly known as whinging) ![]()
