Something I have noticed, but do not know the answer to.
Now can someone please explain to me why all windsurfers have that ****ty "I'm to lazy to paint my board look"
I'm going to assume its got something to do with the weight of the paint?
That 50 grams must really be slowing you down....
In all seriousness, why?
Increases the manufacturer's profit margin by reducing production time and costs.
There are products in the market with high quality finishes. Maybe the finish will depreciate more rapidly and reflect in resale value.
Personaly, I would prefer a van full of highly finished boards. It's influencing my decision making going forward.
It is more than 50 grams, depending on how big the board is it can be 300 grams easy. If you put it in to context that people pay many hundreds of dollars to get the super, duper construction that saves 200-300 grams sanding the paint off is a pretty effective way of shedding some as well.
It a personal choice I guess but if you are anal about the lightest possible board then it,s seems pretty dumb to throw 300 grams at it for purely decorative reasons, if you are not that fussed about it absolutely being as light as possible then painted finishes can look awesome, no question.
As Martin said..
And oif you are trying to get rid of all bleed-through by applying multiple coats, it can even be closer to the 600g mark... which is up 10% of the weight of a "heavy" board and closer to 15% for ultra-light construction.
Underoath no laziness involved, it takes a lot of time to rub off 2pack. Also needs a degreee of commitment to it, spending $50 on 300ml of quality paint for one coat then rubbing it all off seems a bit dumb hahaha
In my case it is rubbed back cos I can't paint.![]()
There are all those arguments about the weight of the paint, but I think it's really about bragging rights- so people can see you have the super duper carbon model from some distance. An "Emperor's New Clothes scenario".
Surely it's more labour intensive to apply paint and rub it off than just spray it well in the first place.
Personally I don't like the patchy look (they look old and scruffy) and whilst I would like a carbon board it does put me off buying certain models.
I suggest don't eat the big mac meal before your next sail, or shed a few kgs off your stomach line.
Saving weight on paint seems a bit silly when we all could drop 1kg off our gut.
or use a lighter wet suit ect ect.....
^^^^ it is not that, it the weight of the board hanging off your feet that you have to move ..... like swinging it thru a turn (esp wavesailing) or control over chop when going fast.... being able to trim with less muscle effort is a big thing. Given kiters edge all the time maybe it is foreign to you but watch a video of very fast sailing in chop, the sailor is moving the board al the time, multiple times per second. a 5kg board feels a lot different to 6 or 7
I'd ratehr they took weight out of the paint than took it out of structural materials!
But it is all very silly when it started as a way to show off carbon and save weight..... and then manufacturers started using black resin with glass (not carbon) and rubbing it back to look the same. That is dumb.
^ I refuse to do it because it looks stupid but my harness is wearing through my wetsuit fabric. It makes sense to throw a pair of sacrificial boardies in between.
Mark I see your argument re less board to move but how does that argument work with that bloody big and bloody ugly board in your other thread?
^^ even more relevant to a fat board - hull width can help with planing earlier but if you are gonna make it fatter you try to keep weight down.
Yeah but looking at the size of that board, not painting it is like ordering a large double quarter pounder meal and swapping the drink to a diet coke?
Chris the math is not hard to do. The wide board has maybe 200g more material than a more conventional shape, in order that it planes earlier. You can get that weight back by sanding back paint.
I'd not expect a kiter to understand it ![]()
The real truth is that a lot of windsurfers are really really boring, and the designers are really lazy.
But lucky the ones that come to see me aren't so we go for paint and the boards look super radical.. this one was heaps heavy, almost an extra 80 grams of paint.
Also if there that Anal about board weight why put stickers on there and deck pads, also deck grip in front of the deck box, all this adds weight.
And those super light wood finish boards actually have a clear full deck sticker over the wood, and most of the sand through look boards have a clear coat over them!!
Think I would rather have a flame job..

I reckon you should weigh the board, give it to Jabba to play with and paint then weigh it again. Get him to put some flames or go fast racing stripes on it ![]()

Agreed, my last RRD had rubbed back paint and then clearcoated over... WTF?
But Jase you can actually paint, the blokes with the spraygun at Cobra probably can't

you dont understand how sailing works ( thats why you have a kite )even the weight on your gut is ballast and gives you more power the weight on the board just slows you down

Even when they wear a waist harness???

Be nice Simon, I wasn't attacking you.
^^^ but you kinda were taking the piss, saying a lighter board means nothing.
It can be a discernable effect, but like I said - as you have 30L under your feet, not 100L, maybe you'd not get it.
I ride a twin tip most of the time so to answer your question- I wouldn't have noticed the discernable effect.
I suppose the equivalent might be reducing the flying weight of a kite? But I also can't see there being any real word difference if I could buy a kite without dye in the fabric and the screen printing and logos?

well how about a three strut kite vs a 5 strut kite which makes a massive difference especially to kitesurfing as the kite can drift downwind in lighter winds....
or naish brought out there strutless kite its LIGHTER ![]()

must be a pig to get planing with all that extra weight ![]()

Thats because your kits with more battens holds its shape better , the shape of the foil in your kite or sail can make a massive difference to the amount of lift it makes its the same in windsurf sails the race ones and heavy but have lots of cams and battens to hold the shape .
As for the die in the kite i dont think die weighs much but if it was lighter you would less of its power to hold it self up and more to power you forwards .
Are people serious, in thinking that the 300 grams for paint (if that) is the difference between early planing and not.......![]()
I hate boring.... get some colour on ![]()
I agree my windsurfing board/s is plain and looks like ****. Mono and 4 colour is so 90`s
They have to sort it out and put epoxy photos naked bitches all over it Mabe even a fully dressed nun with spread leg fingering herself with a full sleave tattoo of a skeletons one with snakes coming out of its eyes !
the manufacturing process is different to kite-boards Pretty sure kite-boards have a heavy pressure press construction and graphics can be added before the coat/ (MASS PRODUCED )
Windsurfing boards have to be shaped after this process its not feasible or economical to reapply complicated graphics!
There just keeping the manafacturing costs down !
They can probably spit out a kite surfing with detailed patterns board ever 30 seconds
.

Yeah you got me on that one. NFI...! ![]()
most windsurfes go a lot more than 50 meters off shore and we honestly dont give a rats about showing off to the ppl on the beach thus buy stuff that works rahter than show pony stuff.
