I just got an old book called "The complete guide to shortboard sailing" by Jeremy Evans, and there's this photo of a race at the Gorge:

Robbie is clearly seen as US-1111, but who is this guy KA-1?

US-9 is Nevin Sayre. Can anyone remember D-1. Thorkil Christensen?

Whoever it is must be pretty quick coz they're in front of Robby!

I think D-1 is Tim Aageson (spelling) or Thomas Persson.
The guy behind Tom with same colour rig is Alex Ageura I think.

And Dave, it was spelt Susan DEY and your right. The chicky babe from Partridge Family

Apparently he is a Japanese autogyro
"The Kayaba Ka-1 was a Japanese autogyro, seing service during World War II."

which would explain why he's flying.

I'm pretty sure it's Tom Luedecke, he was fast enough to be close to those guys and he used to ride for tyronsea which is the insignia on the sail, so yeah thats Tom Luedecke for sure.

Anyone know what happened to Tom Luedecke?

Not sure what happened to Tom Luedecke. In a thread from earlier this year it was suggested he is living in Sydney.

He was sponsored by Tiga, not Tyronsea. Those were the days when Tiga was a big brand and had a big racing team.

Gee, some of you guys must be really OLD!!

The book is from 1985, so the pic must be from that year or earlier, if my understanding of the nature of linear time is correct....

Hey. I resemble that statement!

Time is liniear? Hmmm.... every time I walk into my gear shed I go in a time warp then.

Obscure fact: Tom Luedecke was a founding partner in KA sails Australia but moved on, I think, a few years later to pursue other interests.

'Downhaul' hadn't even been invented in those days!

I had one of those Warp Speed's. It had the massive wind range of .... oh.... about 5 knots!

Another obscure fact. Tom also was instrumental in starting AHD way back!!

That photo was when the big teams and their huge budgets were around.
Mistral/Gaastra and Tiga/Neil Pryde were just some of them.

What i like about these old photo's is "the colours"of the sails, windsurfing stood outwith the change to monofilm windsurfing became camouflaged and sails have become bland.
I used to remember going down for a sail years ago and could count everyone out sailing with ease nowdays it's very hard to spot anyone out on the water.....bring back the flouro greens/reds/blues it would brighten up anyone's day.

For sure, most windsurfing sails are boring and almost invisible. There are some noticeable exceptions. Severne sails look nice, how the colour fades out over the sail. North sails are also quite visible. When monofilm sails came out in the early to mid nineties, windsurfing became an invisible sport.

It would be great if flouro wetsuits to make a comeback too.

Is the uphaul the big fat rope for lifting the whole rig?. This could beimportant if it rains and I can go sailing on water again.
All my sailboarding magazines are OLDER than 1985.
