The Pointman is a big unit, I saw him one day out the back at Melville doing his usual Mach 2 in 25knts a bit choppy, anyway the dismount was nothing short of spectacular, I thought he actually broke the river, he does hold down big kit in strong winds, no BS from him Justin!
GT :)
I find it interesting that quite a few favorite kits include rather large sails, many people say that large sails are heavy and hard to handle.![]()
in 15-20knts my fave combo is
RRD Xfire 122
reflex3 7.8m
44cm Flying Objects Nitro fin
Esky full of little creatures pale ale (on ice) to assist during derigging![]()
The one I don't have to pump to get onto the plane and is not so overpowered that it tries to kill me
Well if the wind is consistent would you rather be on a small sail in stronger winds or the bigger sail is less wind?
Where I sail we seem to go from 10-20kts gusty to 20kts + so I either have the 6.6m ,125ltre ,44cm fin for gusty or straight to the 95ltre ,5m & 3ocm fin..Rarely seem to get consistent 15-20kts..I'd use a 5.8m with the 95 for that but it's rarely used.
30 degrees air, 24 degrees water. Sunny. High tide. Crystal water. ![]()
Weekday. ![]()
20 knot sea breeze. ![]()
5.5 and a 100 litre FreestyleWave.
I just love having three straps. Feels sporty. Easier. FSW boards gybe like they're on autopilot, and have both pop and speed.
These conditions and this setup the gear feels like an extension of your own body.
Lighter side = Falcon 121, Evo III 7.8, 40cm Talon.
Stronger side = Falcon 99, Evo IV 7.0, 36cm Talon.
Can I hijack the thread and ask what is your favourite setup, ignoring wind speed?
For me at 95kg, it is a 90L and 5.2
Something about a sail in the middle of the range (like my wave sails go 4.2 - 6.2 roughly) that makes it sweet. ![]()
(If hijacks are not allowed cos it sounds all Al Qaeda and sets off the GovCo monitoring computers then I withdraw the question)
All time favourite set-up....
Carbon Art SP47 + 6.6 TR7 + 23 KA assy.
25-30K seabreeze and low tide at the Beaver.....
It doesn't get any better than this (in Perth anyway) ![]()

Hijacked away..The more ideas I get the better..I am relatively new to this sport and only have 1 set up..( 150 l exocet cruiser with 5.8 aerotec Sail...) I am planning on upgrading soon so thought it would be good to see what everyone else is doing as far as set up goes...
0-5: Exocet RS D2 with 9.5
5-10: Exocet RS D2 with 9.5
10-15: Exocet RS D2 with 9.5
15-20: Exocet RS D2 with 9.5 and prayer beads
20-25: Exocet RS D2 with 9.5, prayer beads and brown wetsuit
(going back into hiding before I get done for insufficient gear purchasing)
Realistically when I (92kg) go out the wind is building and or gusty so I'll start on my 8m slalom sail and 73cm / 115L slalom board. I'm generally to lazy to re rig so unless it get to a solid 20+ I'll stay on this gear. People have mentioned that my arms look longer when I sail this set up in 20+. ![]()
Otherwise I'd use my 6.6 with a 90L slalom board or FSW depending on the location.
Favourite set up in a consistent 20-25 is a FSW 78 with 5.2 or 5.8m. There's nothing better than being on a small snappy baord in consistent winds. ![]()
Nude Chopper 90 and Blade 6.2 on redline mast / enigma boom.
Super clean waves in this wind strength - 12 - 18 knots.
- and the big rig feels waay better than it has any right to - i think its because of all the super light components - light mast, Wave grenade Carbon Extension, the lightest and best carbon boom money can buy. i Can do all the jumps with this combo - except doubles - actually i cant do double fwds on anything -- too chicken.
This wind strength usually means that the crew are waiting on the beach for it to get windy - so its uncrowded too.
