point is if your same sex couple you can't produce children- that a natural fact of life. if your choice is same sex well, that's your 'choice'- live with it.

you can't have every thing in life, but i can see this government is going to give them everything.

now hears a scenario, what about a single man that wants to have a child- why can he have one, why should he be discriminated from having access to children?

So it's not about marriage at all. Is gay marriage just the next necessary step towards making children accessible to gay couples?

I don't see the point myself, but I imagine it's the highest form of 'symbolically official' commitment between two people. Or maybe it's just they get to have a special day, rather than just fill out some boring tax forms..

Also it might appeal to them because people are against them doing it, which could be considered a result of them not being fully 'accepted' into society.

I'm all for it simply because it'll piss a bunch of people off.

I would think the only option you have of being married is being able to get a divorce.

I personally don't think it's fair to children to be raised by:
dolebludgers
druggos
alcos
physically/mentally abusive parents
fighting or divorcing parents
teenagers
various other stereotypes

^^^ It's all about their desires not the children. However... short of physical abuse being noticed, society doesn't have much of a say in any of those cases.

At least a homarried (?) lesbi-hitched (?) couple really really wants that child and will treat it with great love and affection. They would generally be financially secure as well. Two loving happy parents and a stable loving home is probably what counts most.

I've been married for 20 years, and the certificate that proves it from the State of Nevada, Las Vegas, with Elvis Presley embossed in the cover means very little to me.

It was the unwritten agreement that we made as partners, between us that cemented our bond.

I don't know about here, but in italy, at least until a couple years ago even if you lived with your partner (straight or homo) for 40 years, if he/she got sick you wouldn't be able to took decisions in hospital, you couldn't take care of her/his children, you couldn't inherit like a married couple. so, in this case it makes total sense.

@laceys lane: I really don't understand why a gay couple couldn't be just as good as a straight couple to raise a child.

-it's not like "if a child is raised by gay it'll become gay", since I'm pretty sure a lot of gays are born in straight families...
-if it's about the "other kids teasing the child" I'd suggest to also eliminate kids with glasses, shorties, gingers, fatties...
-if it's about the "growing up with messed up values", first of all don't believe gay people goes around "indoctrinating" other people to become gay (even because it's not exactly a choice... I don't choose to like women, I just get boners when I see nicky whelan), secondly I can guarantee you that growing up in a straight family can mess you up just as easily.

Of course there might be gay people that are unsuitable to be parents, but I don't believe they are more than there are straight people unsuitable to be parents.

Im pretty sure he meant "Gay" as the proper Adjective, meaning "having or showing a merry, lively mood" which was the word that was adopted to describe the temperament of homosexual men.
A man can be Gay without being homosexual and a Homosexual can be a homosexual without being Gay.
Gay is such a Gay word.
A ****** is used to describe a Gay man too. Anyway the main reason for gay marriage is legal rights, Ive known 5 boys I went to school with who had Lesbian mothers, 4 out of 5 of them are Heroin Addicted and are in and out of jail all the time for this, that and what not.

As for Gay couples adopting or having children, well much of their behaviour is based on Narcissism and attention seeking and so many many gaybo's will have children for the wrong reasons, not all, but many just want to fake the funk on front street, to get spots on talkback TV proclaiming how modern and out of the box they are, all the while making the kids suffer for their attention seeking behaviours, not much unlike many hetero couples.

You deleted the quote that summarised my opinion. Think of the Muslim men who want to ban women from wearing revealing cloths, they hate the cloths because it gives them ideas. Basically it's the same with you guys wanting to ban gays, I figure..

I know this topic is just about them getting married, but really, it's about them being gay and not hiding it. People don't want Gays to marry each other because people don't like Gays..

I see lots of ugly heterosexual couples, what they do in the privacy of their own homes is none of my business and I don't want to think about it because it's totally gross.. Do I wan't to ban ugly people from wedding each other? Not quite..

Don't like gays? two reasons I can think of..

No.1 They offend your God and you think you'll get kicked out of Heaven unless you actively hate on them..

Let them call it something else.
I could semi understand gay women wanting kids which I don't think is totally fair to the child but for gay men non-women the kids would probably be just fashion accessories.
I personally think openly gay people should not be in a position to influence children (TV, radio, teachers, parents,...), and gay pride parades, WTF? I'd call it public indecency with what they wear and carry on, a hetro would be locked up.
Let them do as they will in private but do they have to make a big song and dance over it?

If it is legal for gays to get married, is it still legal for a priest to refuse to marry them on the basis of their being gay without being liable under antidiscrimination laws?

If it isn't, then the rights and beliefs of one group of society seem to be being advanced at the expense of another..

Of course, gays could still be married by a civil servent, etc.. But then I always associated "marriage" with religion (and losing half your assets)..

Either way it would seem the institution of marriage loses some of its (religious) value, which is maybe what straight marrying folk fear the most..

Since i'm neither religious or gay, i have zero vested interest and don't really care either way..

This is the crucial argument and shows why its crazy for politicians to make laws that prohibit or allow certain relationships when other organisations besides the government may have differing views on these relationships. It would be better if governments kept out of peoples' personal affairs as long as no one is being hurt and no one, including the taxpayer, is being ripped off.

So the marriage act will be ammended to allow homosexual relationships if the ALP gets their way. All the male and female couples living together where one is working and the other is on the dole or single parenting, who are clearly in a marriage like relationship are now going to lose their benefits. At least the taxpayer will win on that one.
