i say good luck to her .. just hope she doesn't run into any trouble ... and hopefully if she does (i hope she doesn't) she will remember what she knows and not panic to much.

Like i said Good luck to her ... it's great she's doing it and showing young people can do things too and i hope she's safe all the way

its not her that us mariners worry about, its us.
We are at sea using safe manning levels etc but she isnt. As well as being a solo AND inexperienced ocean sailor.
Would you be happy if younger people were allowed on the road on the basis that "other people will see her and get out of the way". Im not talking about rescues either. What if my vessel sinks or one of my crew goes overboard in a collision? We have have families also who would like us to come home.

She is making a BIG MISTAKE!!!!

This is just a stunt and gives most people the wrong impression on what yachting is all about.

She's going to be doing it hard not only in the southern ocean but north to the equator as well. Her route is NE after fiji to the line islands thats to windward
and against the current which can run at a rate of knots.

I think if she really had the right experence for this stunt and listened to people who have actually done it, there's no way she would do it.

Her parants need a good kick up the ass for leading her in this direction, I think they have medication for such disorders GO GET SOME BEFORE YOU LOSE YOUR DAUGHTER!!!!!!!!!!!!

She needs to stop listening to all the ****heads egging her on that haven't done it and listen to the ones who have and will tell her not to be stupid dont do it.

It's not the sea that could kill her its her.

give the girl a break
I sailed around the world with my father when I was 13 on a 40ft Adams. Though I wasnt alone, by the time I was 16 I was running that yacht on the blue water like the old boy wasnt on board.
Im sure her father wouldnt let her go out there if he didnt think she was up to it.
Seeing her in interviews she seems like she knows what shes on about

my 2 cents worth

nickO personally I noticed someone that doesn't look at ease on a boat. She obviously has some ability to sail as she has done but for the potential situations she will see she should know her way around that boat blindfolded.

I understand what u mean shark but at the end of the day ... she's doing what she wants to do and i just hope she stays safe ... keeps herself out of trouble and doesn't cause any body else any trouble on her travels. No i wouldn't want younger drivers on the road with that basis. i wouldn't want your vessel to sink either or any harm to come to you, your crew or families but what i say on sea breeze wont affect anything jessica watson does... so i just give her my luck really. I'm only 18 myself but i wouldn't let my child go solo on the water even if they were 20 years old lol. it's not safe. not really got much else to say but reply or email me if you want to talk further shark.

I'm confused. Says she is sailing Shearwater.

In a NE and outgoing tide, just doesn't work. Silly Jessica.

Maybe you should join her on the expedition nick0. You could teach her how to sail and how to manage risk and she could teach you English, etiquette and public relations.

In the process the two you could set a brand new world record as, "The Youngest Pair of Singularly Egotistical Sailors to Circumnavigate without Killing Each Other".

Before you say things like this "for seconders the boat is a piece of ****", maybe you should Google S&S 34 Circumnavigations and read some things like this

and this

When you log to VMR you need to specified POB. number of people on board...
i find it strange she did not log into VMR when she left ..Did is it she forget or she did not want to report POB..was she really alone ??

by the way , she bost 10 000 miles experience..
well last year in november , when i met her, she had only to her sailing offshore :5 days cruise in vanuatu with 5 people onboard a 32 ts boats..
i find it hard to beleive she did 10 000 miles in 10 months......

just facts...

10 000 miles in 10 months

Maybe she has done 99.9% of that in dinghies and that has given her all the experience thats needed to sail safely non stop around the world single handed

"she will fail .. and i will laugh"

Nicko-thats just a stupid comment from an idiot-or a troll more likely.

The S&S34 is probably the best production vessel available at a reasonable price for bluewater sailing.
While I wish her no harm, I do hope that should the worst occur, it doesnt involve anyone other than those who chose to participate in this.
But in my mind there is NO DOUBT that these records will be pursued until a tragedy occurs then Guinness and other agencies will refuse to record them.
Success will only promote someone else to try until the inevitable...

Where she is going the most undesireables would be a greenpeace ship or the "Steve Irwin". Those ships make a habit of colliding with other vessels.

Aha opinion ping pong - with out personal experience of the young lass - a lot of this is too pre-judged. There are 3 opinions presented in this thread I read and automatically respect - both side of the opinion divide.

I reckon most people's gut feeling is that she is under done on the preparation side - fatally?? Well some weather conditions out there will be fatal regardless - refer movie clips - but a lot of ok weather occurs through these areas which does not make a You Tube clip. I worked 3+ years at sea and mostly is was not really wild - but the few times which were were out there - (pre UTube!!).

Would I stop her if I had the emperor's thumb - no.

Why? - There is one of her trying in this country.

Since I heard of the trip - without trying to I have also heard of a kid fatally bashed to death in an "Accident" in a local school yard - and at least three kids younger than Jessica dead around a tree / lamppost - in car crashes - a suicide - etc.. this information is sourced locally - so on a national basis there would be more young deaths through a range of courses - most through far more shallow less prepared and thought out circumstances..

So if she wants to fly and it fails I as a parent would feel - better to happen trying than the all too common alternatives.

She is not guaranteed to fail - far from it. I will follow her endeavor with interest - I will not be totally gob smacked if she retires after 30+% of the journey - and would still give her the thumbs up for trying.

And on a totally different note - Blood_ H!!! the W/E and wind are coinciding - amazing - 4U2 I hope

In retrospect, some of the stuff I've done to date feels like it could have gone either way with the toss of a coin (50% chance). So if she's heading into this with an expert giving her 66% chance of survival, that seems like pretty good odds. Of course she knows the odds in advance, if I knew how potentially dangerous some of my actions were going to be before I did them, perhaps I would have done things differently.

Anyway, I'm going to get on my motorbike and go the 10km home now. Hopefully I survive the trip.

Her boats moored at the spit on Middle Harbour. Its tiny!
If she does manage to pull this off it would prove one thing i.e that what she is doing is just a game of chance and she has defied the odds and succeeded.
Does one have to be experienced to win at gambling?
No,just plain lucky. And yes it does happen.

An S&S34 is probably the best affordable vessel available. They have been used for this by many others. including Jesse Martin.

My problem is that the next and next to try it... younger and younger???
Where to draw the limit? 15?12?9??
