Her parents are irresponsible for encouraging her to do it and they need to be held personally accountable for any rescue attempt. I'm really tired of half arsed people attempting "record-breaking" stunts and expecting tax payers to bail them out of the mess that they find themselves in down the track.
If she makes it - hooray, I hope she makes a million dollars on book deals and tv appearances.
if she dies trying - I hope her parents are jailed

^^^^^^
i`d rather fork out for her than the other boat people
I'm really tired of half arsed people
^^^^^^
do you know her that well? o.k.
Oliver, spend money building housing for the refugees, Ill make a small wager with you That within six months Christmas island welcoming camps will be burnt to the ground by some rabble among the needy. Do we really need another powerful ethnic religious group to take up refurbishing in aussie. As their opposition will already be here somewhere, waiting to rekindle centuries old fighting.
All people are welcome here, to start anew, but leave their baggage behind and come naked.
sure i don`t mind sharing,...of cause it`s been done before so should we stop at that? and what gives you the right to tell her she`s retarded, and how do you know she`s doing it for fame and fortune.
I reckon you're a bunch of sooks. There's a 16year old girl who's willing to take on the southern ocean while you all sit on your arses complaining about rescue fees and, what if something bad happens?
Isn't the whole idea of a challenge or an adventure taking risks and accepting the outcomes?
Jessica Watson is making you look like a bunch of raging nancy boys.
I don't understand why you'd want to sail around non-stop, you'd miss everything. If I were her parents I'd be encouraging her to stop as many places as she could.
aaah... the record, of course.
just a question or two.
1. do international sailors have to pay an insurance policy that covers their rescue/liability?
2. does anyone think that it would discourage open sea sailing if, like road users, yachtmen had to pay such insurance?
Yes it's risky. It would be booring if it wasn't.
Who cares about public outcry. Who cares about liability.
Why can't someone do something a bit on the edge these days without people crapping on about repercussions .
Doggie, you're into surfing aren't you ? If you're out at some remote break and it's 8 foot plus, there's a good chance you could stuff up pretty bad and need to be rescued.
Surfers are always pushing the limits of survival ,going bigger ,deeper and more remote. They also take some pretty young crew along with them and encourage them to get amongst it.
If you're happy living your life in front of your computer ,that's fine. Just don't bag out people who live the real thing.
Just Heard about a bloke who was injured surfing shipstern bluff (remote location in Tassie) had to be rescued by helicopter.
Just got me thinking where do you draw the line ? Should the taxpayer be looking after every one out there who puts themeselves in risky situations?
What about the cost of smoking and other drugs to the taxpayer?
Im not commenting on Jessica, but find the related issues interesting.
Sorry Doggie. The computer comment wasn't aimed at you. That was for all the doubters.
I was just using surfing as a comparison.
Knowlegde and experience = equalls= power............. well may be if its used correctly.
FUNNY but to much and or a lack of experience and knowledge can lead to hesitation , sceptisism, and self doubt.
Age is the bizare one ..........what is age ............is it a barrier, a symbol indicating ones knowledge ,a ruling or judged determination of ones experience on life
18 you are deemed an Adult by law Law our tribal Oz LAW ...................RESPONSIBLE FOR ONES SELF.
Great there is a loop hole that allows her to depart
I believe
Lots of rules are for fools and the wise will interperate ...............
She has the backing, experience and knowlege and determination but as all water people on this forum know she will need lots of good fortune from nature , human activity and with her equipment
So whos kidds are up next and at what age ? ...........if she makes it? and if she dose not ?
I say
Cheek your yatch club mirror dingy fleet hope your not missing one.
Then on the other hand give them a tourch and some food a cast more of them off.
As a sailor who built his own yacht and sailed offshore on quite a few voyages
I have some small idea of what Jessica is taking on
I think the dangerous bit is the solo part
Seamanship requires a lookout to be kept at all times and as solo sailors cannot do that then that is very dangerous
I know the ocean is a big place but I have been amazed at the number of times
I have have had to alter course to avoid a collision when alerted by a family member of a threatening ship
On one occasion we nearly sailed into a large fishing vessel adrift with no lights
The mental toughness of doing this alone is something not to be taken lightly either I hope she copes with it all but I wouldnt want my daughter to be doing it
