Sailor Watson heading past New Zealand
Australian Jessica Watson, who is attempting to become the youngest person to sail solo around the globe, is on Sunday passing north of New Zealand on her way to the Pacific Islands.
The 16-year-old was halfway between Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island on Saturday evening and said conditions were good.
"Well, perfect is about the only word for it out here today, we're doing 6.5 knots," she wrote on her blog at 8pm on Saturday.
Watson's 38,000km voyage began last Sunday and her blog entries have so far described an easy run, avoiding the occasional ship and encountering dolphins and jellyfish.

That would be boat bonding, blonding. Her-n-ella i.e. WE.
Noticed x Sydney the boat, ella, had what seemed extra solar panels above the rear end. Now, going easterly they would be shaded, 
or semi shaded by sail and rigging in the am.
In the pm there would be shading from the wind generator stand thingy, 
which was placed beyond the stern of the boat. Therefore wouldn't that all mean that recharging would be compromised. 
I believe that any shadow across a solar panel servery cuts back any charging ability. 
Something to do with the way a panel is wired up inside. Even birdydoo or dust will compromise a solar panel if not cleaned off pronto. 
Could battery reserves capacity be slowly run down [}:)]

Never seen "birdydoo" on a vessel at sea. There is a heap of it in this thread though.
A 14-year-old Dutch girl who hopes to become the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the world solo says she will wait until the school year ends before starting her attempt.
Laura Dekker is awaiting a court's decision on whether she can go ahead with her voyage or whether it would be too risky for a girl her age.
The Utrecht court temporarily blocked her departure in August out of concern for her safety. The decision sparked a worldwide debate on when authorities should limit children's freedom to undertake risky adventures.
Dekker told NOS television on Monday she hadn't expected so much publicity, and would wait until May regardless of the court's decision, which is due on Friday.
Dekker was in court for a closed session on Monday.

Any one know the record she is actually attempting. The record ratified by World Speed Sailing Council (i.e the one that recognised Jesse Martin's record) now has the record listed as discontinued.

And as far as i understand, the record recognised by Guinness World Records doesn't include the non-stop, unassisted part. Currently Held by Zac Sunderland, who is younger than Jessica.
I think it has been made pretty clear that this IS about the record by her PR people, but which record?
I disagree with many of the posters on this forum. I hope Jessica is able to circum-navigate 'Ella's Pink Lady' non-stop around the world. She is young but she seems to have the courage and the strength to achieve her goal. I have been following her blog and she seems to know the yacht well and how to handle it. I think its great that a 16 year old has the guts to do something like this, as it won't be an easy voyage. She will have to face many obstacles along the way but I think she will do it. Others have done it before her and I know a family that circum-navigated the world in their 33 foot yacht (not non-stop but they still had to overcome challenges along the way)

I'm not Jessica's mother and you can address me as 'Madam Captain' or just 'Madam'. I was raised around boats and yachts as a child so I guess that's why I support Jessica in her quest to sail around the world non-stop. My parents owned a yacht when I was a kid and they took us (myself and my older brother and sister) on a sailing holiday from Carnarvon in Western Australia, around the top half of Australia, across the gulf of Carpentaria and down the Queensland coast to Mooloolaba where we stayed for 6 months. I can remember lots of negative comments from people before we left, like people telling my parents that they were crazy taking a young family sailing and that the yacht would sink, we would never get anywhere etc, etc.
I really hope that Jessica isn't reading this discussion because most people on here are very negative.

Many of us with a sailing background have concerns and a lot of us made mistakes.

The best result is that Jessicia succeeds, with her round the world unaided trip,
that would give her some sorta record, if that's what SHE really wants
It will be great if no one has to rescue her, that would put her one up on the British great, Bullymoore, of southern ocean fame.
However if someone does need to go get her, may it be done in the traditions of the sea and be successfully. All things are to serve a purpose and even rescue's have the merit of training people.
Forum discussion allows all people to expound their two bobs worth and i consider are very worthwhile as a mind training exersize for those who may not have had the opportunity to participate in real life, Some people have plenty of knowledge just sitting there doing nothing, its great to see it surface

I just uploaded a photo to my avatar. That is me on our yacht Passage West when I was 7, back in the early 80s. I think this photo was taken in Queensland somewhere, not exactly sure where though.
Did anyone see what i saw the other day, on a TV report with family, mother,
and Google earth in background. Just after the equator was broached. Google earth showed a pointer as an indicator for Jessicia', position, a second pointer some
distance away, guestimate a couple of hundred klicks. It was labeled support vessel.
Did i actually see this or was it just an optical mind trick. Anyone else observe this??
As a new boater i raise my glass...4 months ago i was ****ting myself a kilometer from land. From Wellington Point, Peel island was a wish, tangalooma was a goal. Finally done them both, she cant fail to me unless she washes up on a beach somewhere...i guess
