There is a pretty big thread in the kiteboard section on this. As is always the case with the media, all is not what it seems.

GASP!!

I just did a quick vist to the Kitesurfing forum.
It's on the verge of all out civil war!
I was lucky to escape with my life.
It was like accidentally walking over a nest of black ants!
It's a real jungle over there. Kiter eat kiter. (mmm,. that might be nice, if I can pick which ones.)

It's so nice to be back here in the windsurf section where there are "friendly faces everywhere and humble folk without temptation".
Not to mention the "ample parking day or night."
(maybe I just heard that somewhere.)

No,you mean back to the bitter jealous poledancers who constantly whine about kitesurfers !

There are half a dozen threads over there crying about kiters. So jealous and bitter ! But why wouldn't they ? While they are bogging around(if they are lucky) kiters are ripping it up !

Check the windsurf Forum. There are lots of posts crying about kiters.

Actually I am surprised that there are any windsurfers left ! A dying race thats for sure !

I really don't understand your problem!
You do your (boring) thing.....and we do ours !

Its not our fault that kiting is such a dynamic, exillerating, visual sport.

To all you haters.....BAD LUCK !!! I will just boost 30 ft over you as if you don't exist !

Just love that shot of the kiter "ripping it up" over the concrete wall. Now thats what I call an exillerating (sic) boost.

Ever since I had started windsurfing non waterpeople always get it confused with kiting, i say no, its the other sport. I ALWAYS get asked why dont/ why havent I tried kite surfing, then i tell the story about seeing a kiter getting slammed into the wall at st kilda....

I know on wednesday at work it will be the topic of discussion at lunch. That tool has completely screwed the reputation for all the good blokes i have met that are kiters.

I was sailing at "deadly" bondi that day, aparently it happend about 20min after I got out. Wish I had of stayed out abit longer. From the promo it looks funny as hell. The kite ended up in the skate park, lucky it didnt make it up onto campbell pde,Imagine if a kite ended up flying down a main road. Fortunately it just ended up being an hilariosly embarassing moment for grant. Dont be hard on the kiters though, you gotta admit it is pretty entertaining to watch hahahahahhahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahhaha

Get over it. Take a risk and start kiteboarding. Anyway its probably safer than windsurfing.

If not you can just watch me fly over you head at saint kilda! lol

Not that i've experienced kiter/windsurfer on water tension before.
But if some idiot jumped over me (windsurfer or kitesurfer) i'd be pretty angry

Ewan Kite and User - You encapsulate all that is wrong with kiteboarding. The sport seems fine, but a small but ever growing bunch of you sound very immature. Think 'boosting' over someone, then stuffing up the jump and landing ontop of them, injuring both and ruining gear would be good for your sport?

User - Far from a dying sport, i've just taken up this sport in the last few months. I am of the 'kiter-generation' in age, but windsurfing seems more pure, has relation to sailing, can be an olympic sport, harder, so I chose windsurfing.

Your view is that windsurfing has been cancelled. But maybe silly people and silly action in your sport will lead to dire consequences (read: Bondi bans). Maybe kitesurfing has been cancelled?

It was just terrible I tell you. Oh the humanity! (Hindenburg quote)

Stribo was over there trying to soothe the situation but last I saw he was taking some fierce blows.
I would have stayed to help him but I think something I said might have made things worse.
I've no idea what that might have been though. They're all such touchy little buggers.
I mean, one of their very own gets slammed against a concrete wall in a very nasty and totally unforseeable accident, and then just in case he's still alive, all his 'mates' stick the boots in with an all out heavy duty industrial strength sledging.
It's appalling!
I'm just,.. well,... appalled!

I think Elmo has gone over there on a one man rescue mission to extract Stribo's remains.

The distinction is that some windsurfers b!tch about kiters, however there is 10X more infighting in the kite forums. I rarely see windsurfers sledge each other here, but the kite forum is an embarrasment to mankind.

Its pitifull that Windsurfers have to put up videos of Maui to try and show some good action!

They worship at the altar of Hookipa and Lanes, then go to their local flat spot,or 2 ft mushy waves and bog in and out.

The difference with kiting as that the exciting moves can be made on any day over 12 knots ! We don't have to make a pilgrimage to Maui or Gnaralloo.

Well thats good that no kiters have to go to Maui (Lanes and Hookipa etc...) means that there will be more space in the water for me when I am there in July

What's exciting about watching a kiter do a jump then twirl around like a 13 year old gymnast under a high bar?

Sorry, but I find it a very boring sport to watch. I'm sure it's more fun to do it than watch it though.

Couple of observations that do little to attract me to kiting.

Firstly, in this place anyways (inland north america of all places), it attracts the look-at-me scene. Both newcomers looking to be looked at for doing something different, and jaded windsurfers that are bored going right and left year after year with expensive equipment. The former reminds me of the early windsurfing scene too - early 80s.

Secondly, nearly all kiters that come back from a ride never ever look tired. I'm sure it's exhilarating to go flying, whether up in the air or into a Bondi wall. But it sure looks like one un-exerting activity.

Those are my observations from this place, haven't been in Sydney in a while to witness the crowd there.

I'm not done with windsurfing yet, but good on them.

Why are some folks defending kiting and hard-selling the sport to the poleys ?
Poleys aren't interested in crossing-over to kitesurfing.
They are generally freaked-out by kitelines anyway.
The good wavesailors have invested so much time and money to get to the skill level they're at....
they aren't prepared to throw all that away and become a kook in the waves again.
Stop pimping the kite.
I don't need anymore strings at my break.
