Does anyone actually refer to their board alone as a windsurfer? Sad I know, but I am genuinely curious. Mmmm... semantics.

Its wrong because the first rule of the English language is there is always an exception to the rule.
In this case the exception is the exceptional sport of windsurfing, surfing the wind.
