Released 26 December 2012.
Great work Red Bull!
... Also, did I * spot * lycra # 30 in the L2L secret training on Boxing Day powering on the Lancelin Ocean Classic Course, I think I did ... !
Well done L2L team it was a great day to be part of!!!
Congrats to all the top place finishers you boys & girls flew :)
Fark I see what Dale was on about with that dive boat, very close mate ![]()
Surely a professional skipper would have known there was a race on or figured that out with all the other kites about and gave a bit more room!
Perth Diving Academy Skippers Ticket ? That was extremely dangerous and very poor seamanship no excuse period.........
Told you the dive boat was close, I had to push upwind because we were on a collision course...... and they thought I was waving and smiling......... MOVE...![]()
The video should be shown to the CEO of the
Perth diving club!
His thoughts would be interesting
As would the polices thoughts
And the dive boat also seems to try and get closer and closer instead of moving away.. what a f#kwit!
Agree it doesn't look good and could have gone very pear shaped but I think the fact that the footage is shot from a chopper that is moving makes it look worse.
In the skippers defence, although he should have been aware that there was a kite race and he or the crew should have been keeping a better eye out, Dale was up the front of the pack and moving pretty fast, the skipper would have been looking forward mainly so probably didn't even see him until the last minute.
On the ocean it is the overtaking vessel that is suppose to give way but on the one day of the year that we have a race you'd think they could give us some room.
That is a bit hard if the skipper of the powered vessel can't see you coming up from behind (boats don't have rear view mirrors) that is why they have this rule.
"Every vessel (power or sail) that is overtaking must keep well clear of the over taking vessel. You are overtaking if you are approaching another vessel anywhere in a 135 degree sector at its stern."
If you imagine yourself sitting in the middle of the wheelhouse which is right at the top of the vessel, a kiter is probably below your field of vision when that close by at the side (or even in front) and the kite is above.
Hey Dale, I was filming from the chopper, and that dive boat was f$@kn close mate.. We were all screaming in the chopper, we all thought it was gonna end in tears.
Apart from that , the race looked f$kn awesome from the air, lotsa hooting going down.
Hey Gavo, It was even closer from my perspective, I really thought we were going to collide, I was shouting and waving..... All the passangers on the back deck knew I was there..they were waving too and shouting with joy. I was hoping the crew saw me when I came along side and would slow down to let me pass. I just hope they keep clear of the race next year, or at least keep a very good eye out for kiters....
all ended well. I lost some time, but better than being dead in the long run.
always next year.
